Still Leaving?

  • That’s how many residents left Illinois last year.

People leave the state for a variety of reasons from weather to career opportunities.

But experts say Illinois’ population loss bucks national trends and is the opposite of what surrounding states are seeing.

WGN Investigates traveled to Nashville, Tennessee to catch up with Chicagoans who made the move for financial reasons. How did they know it made sense? Do they have any regrets?
You can see the whole report at the link up top. We all know plenty of cops (and other city workers) that have joined the exodus.

They said financial reasons where part of the story. They also felt the political corruption was another main reason and didn’t feel that was going to change

I'm one of the fleeing residents. I retired and left Illinois. My real-estate taxes are about 20% of what they were and so much of a public service pension is exempt I only paid $190 in state income tax.

It's largely the boomers retiring and moving on. The more troubling group is the young adults who can do the math.
You need a damn good income to live comfortably in Chicago.

Nashville, for all of its booming business and exploding country music venues and related bars/eateries, isn't all paradise.
I spoke with officers down there when I attended a country music concert there last summer. The officers I spoke to who
worked the event told me that staffing levels of the Nashville PD have remained the same over the past 20 years, in spite
of huge population growth, because they, like other municipalities, cannot attract good numbers of qualified police applicants.
So think about that when you head down to Nashville. More people leaving the job than coming on. No real strength in numbers
of police staffing there in 2 decades, despite the population booms. Oh, and you cannot carry a gun into most venues. You are
even made to walk through a metal detector to enter Vanderbilt University Hospital.

Sorry to beat a dead horse, but I got out last year and am loving it. Bought a more expensive house with a fantastic view, and I’m paying less per month because my property taxes are a third what they were in IL.

And folks - people here were literally LAUGHING about the latest IL proposal to jack up property taxes by 1 or 2 percent to pay for the state’s pension scewups. What theft.

I think my timing was absolutely perfect. But the window is still open, although it’s closing fast. Get out while you still can.

For me I will leave in two years and it's because of; taxes, crime, anti-gun politicians, over regulations, liberal thoughts on crime and incarceration, anti police politicians and open racism by politicians and media.

I'm going to move to a pro-gun, pro-Police, pro-tax payer and low crime area. I can't wait. They are really going to miss all the good people leaving when we are gone.

Retired CPD in Oklahoma says.....

Moved here in 2015, up in the mountains taxes $965 year for $250K house on 100 acres, small town living find anyone in elected office (county/town) working their farm, store and talk with them anytime. Crime, have some minor but report something stolen expect the chief and every police, sheriff will be on it and most curplits are rounded up before the week is out. Everyone carries out here open or CCW...everyone carries!

Surprised me most are how polite the kids (under 21) are. Wife had a flat, pick-up truck of school kids changed it for her, they help with loading bags a store, refuse any tips, always say Sir or Miss when addressing you. wear my CPD cap, always give you 10% off without asking, I cannot tell you how many meals been paid for me/wife when we eat out.

Yes, police or military treated in highest regards. Nearest neighbor two miles but they always bring wife, eggs, butter, etc. Go to town, hardware store or restaurants have retired guys drinking coffee offering advice hunting, where to get parts, help, or whatever you need.

What impressed me, seeing the county commissioner working (driving a road grader) with a road crew when a road washed out, the whole day not for a picture take either. Someone passes away, The Pastors / Preachers/ Priest go door to door for a collection to help the family, ask for help with the farm if needed...all the money going to the family. Not for vanity lic. plates or gun protest marching T-shirts.

http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2018/05/22/illinoisans-fleeing-state-taxes-financial-loss/

Illinoisans Fleeing State by Tens of Thousands over Taxes and Financial Loss

Excerpts:
Indeed, Chicago is unique in the U.S. for being the only major city that has consistently lost citizens over the last five years. The Tribune’s editorial board even published an editorial saying that it no longer makes any sense to live in Illinois.

Best-selling author Brad Thor, who calls himself an “economic refugee,” told WGN that he fled Chicago to stop “aiding and abetting” the city’s corruption.

“I was aiding and abetting a corrupt system in Illinois,” he said explaining why he moved to the Nashville, Tennessee, area. “We’d all had it,” he said of why he and others left Chicago.

* bingo Doug corruption the most corrupt city state in United States of America but yet the story left off the main reason many of us especially Chicago police officers and police throughout the state will tell you the violence is overwhelming maybe they were told to them or omit the violent part of the story but that is definitely a Huge factor in the story! The strange thing is the lemmings will vote in the same Democrats that have destroyed this city county and state they won’t do like good little pads and bottom right back in and the corruption will continue the bloodshed will be worse the morgue will have to add an addition due to all the violence.

Does the mayor the cook county board president Kimmy Tommy or any of the elect Democrats maybe the alderman stop by the homes stop by the funerals of the murdered innocent people? How about stopping by the hospitals of the people that of been stabbed shot how about the hospital where the 21-year-old kid from the suburbs was beaten brutally on Michigan Avenue by black offenders as the alderman stop by to visit the family? Have any of the elected stopped by and told the families how much they are doing to stop the violence? Of course not because they are scared they are cowards they are protected by massive amounts of police officers 24 hours a day seven days a week at their disposal for themselves and their families! Just wonder if there could be a massive lawsuit where is all the victims families could jump on and Sue every last one of the elected for not doing their jobs allowing them to live in peace and safety?

The main job of the elected officials is to protect the people that put them in office by all means necessary, our elected officials have done nothing but attack the police bastardize every police officer they can, the mayor has developed so many civilian agencies to attack the police to fire police officers and some of the police officers will lose their freedom and all the bank accounts and their family thanks to the corrupt system that is here where their motto is right is wrong and wrong is right from their democratic view points The main job of the elected officials is to protect the people that put them in office by all means necessary, our elected officials have done nothing but attack the police bastardize every police officer they can, the mayor has developed so many civilian agencies to attack the police to fire police officers and some of the police officers will lose their freedom and all their bank accounts and their family thanks to the corrupt system that is here where their motto is right is wrong and wrong is right from their democratic view points! God please bless the police please bless the innocent citizens that are stuck here or choose to stay here even though the odds are against them you never know if you’re going to return home without being a victim of violent crime please watch out for each other officers please back each other up no matter what it takes we are all we have!

Why not, would be good way out of all the generous pension problems. Get out while the getting is good. Only things you might miss are good pizza and Italian Beefs. Retired and was looking at Florida. No state income tax and lower property taxes. However, FYI taxes are lower because most communities have associations and you are responsible for garbage pick-up, street and sewer maintenance, thereby increasing month condo fees.

So I broke it down. Currently pay 7000 property tax and live in Chicago suburbs, garbage and streets included, no state income on pension. In a condo community in Fl. pay 2200 in property tax(sounds good), but pay 2400 a year to master association, 1300 a quarter to condo assoc., plus 2000 a year hurricane insurance. Total 11,800.

I understand the frustration in Il. but do your numbers, the grass is not always greener.

Illinois’ Tax Freedom Day, the day upon which the state has earned enough income to pay off its federal, state, and local tax bills, will not come until April 29th, according to the nonpartisan Tax Foundation. Only three states had later Tax Freedom Days: Connecticut, New Jersey and New York.
Not one of Illinois’ neighboring states has a Tax Freedom Day later than April 19th this year. Indiana’s Tax Freedom Day fell on April 10th.

Nashville might have a traffic problem but nothing like traffic in Chicago. I moved to Nashville area and reduced my cost of living by 30%. People are more friendly, a slower pace of life. Police, fire are respected and we are not afraid to fly a flag. The suburbs around Nashville have excellent schools. Larger house, bigger lot, low cost of gas and food. Love the country music.

If the "community" ever figured out that in 9 1/2's sanctuary city every single illegal immigrant child going to a Chicago Public School
takes over $10,000 away from a "community" child, they would vote these Demon-crat politicians OUT!
Or that every single illegal immigrant DOES get SNAP, housing assistance, free healthcare, free phones, free lawyers.....which takes money
from the same pot the "community" does......so there will be less and less for the "community".....and they now have ID's to VOTE!
Illinois politicians have held on to their spots by promising more and more to help the "community" but that has failed to happen....the
"community" has NOT improved their lifestyle one little bit....parents aren't parenting.their kids aren't graduating from high school, aren't going on to college, and with a 50% or less graduation rate, and only 6th grade abilities in reading, writing, math, language,
aren't getting decent jobs, and are being shot down in the street by thugs that these same politicians refuse to keep in jail, letting them loose on the "community" time and time again to create more mayhem.....with a shoot to kill mentality that equals WWll....
And that is the WHY of why all decent, LAW ABIDING, tax paying citizens are getting out of Illinois as soon as they can......because they know that POLICE are not the problem.

I grew up in Marquette Park, attended Lindblom HS (61) went to the U of I at Navy Pier for 2 years before transferring out. Got my draft notice in 1966 and was gone and never came back to live. I have lived in 6 different states since leaving. Went back home at least once a year to visit my parents and I literally watched Chicago devolve. When you are gone and come back you notice the change. My parents gave up in the 1990's and moved to a western suburb.

The old economic axiom holds true bad money drives good money out. Bad schools, political corruption, high taxes and rising crime will cause people to leave. The post from the person in Oklahoma is spot on. There are better places to live. I am on Florida's Emerald Coast aka Redneck Riviera/ LA (lower Alabama) for the past 35 years. Yes the summers are hot, the winters are mild, people are polite, no state income tax, property taxes are low, and criminals are prosecuted, not coddled.

Until the electorate of Chicago/Cook County/Illinois vote in change I don't see anything getting better for the area. Lots of luck in the future, you will need it.

Retired revolver cop here. I live in a small town 50 miles north of Denver. The people are pro-police and love Trump. My house is valued at $ 350,000. Property taxes $ 1700 per year.

Good riddance Chicago.

Just watched the segment and it is interesting that they blame "politics". I don't know if these people they interviewed were too politically correct to admit that they are sick of paying all the high taxes that these legislators either pocket for themselves or use to bribe the low info voters with more government freebies. These transplants better wise up and support fiscal conservatives running the local government otherwise they will end up creating the same over-taxed crime ridden shit hole town that they just left.

5/23/2018 07:52:00 AM

In Tennessee, I pay $2,100 in property taxes, $40 month HOA fee. No state income tax. Property insurance, auto insurance is cheaper than Chicago. Gas is $2.50 gallon. Grass is greener, just need to do more research. BTW, very little crime.

Retired CPD in Oklahoma says.....

Any minority is very welcome here from all that I seen, Mostly Indians here like 60 % + ...what they like are working respectable Americans. People who look out and help each other, no black areas, white areas, Indian areas...everyone lives together. Met an older Black man Cal who is a retired Oklahoma State Trooper who been a new friend here since day two, introduced me to to many locals who were more then happy to met a retired CPD. My first month here a group of kids, under 20 were hunting on my land which the former owner let them. All were polite, mixed group, Indians, blacks, white when told I was the new owner first thing they asked if they can help out with anything. Also welcoming me to Oklahoma.

Expect to find new friends, of all walks of life here. The good ol boy crap you see on TV,...is not here. Give Oklahoma a chance, low taxes, property...hell find any type of house on acres of land super cheap, and very friendly people.

Look pass Tulsa and Oklahoma City, unless you want small city living...nice places also like small burbs in Chicago, but look at the small towns, east side of the state. Be surprised at how many ex police from other states, retired military also.
Born on the south side never thought I would even visit Oklahoma,...now,..I'll never leave here. Look at house and property on the net, take a weekend trip. Be more then happy to take in any CPD for a weekend and show them the area.

Stay safe my blue brothers and sisters,....this is going be a long hot summer in the big city Chicago.

If ,when you move please leave the Chicago Values behind. It's nice here and we don't need a bunch of people who need everything done for them. There is a reason taxes are low, you won't find the services that you are used to. You might even have to haul your own garbage to the dump. Only volunteer Fire Department that by the time they arrive your house maybe gone. The local Sheriff has 3 deputies and are 1/2 hour away however that might be better service than in Chicago. People take care of themselves here so don't expect city services to solve all your problems. This is how it is in the country, the city living is different more like what you are used to. There is no shortage of democratic voters and illegals. It is up to you to decide where you fir in.

I’m an account and most of the people on here are 💯 right. A lot of taxpayers are leaving because between the property taxes, state income tax and sales tax (that’s only 3, we have much much more) you are easily paying over 50% ofyour incone to pay this corrupt machine we call Illinois. Then our politicians turn around and give free handouts to lazy leaches. Why? For more votes and insuring we stay democratic. They keep this shit up, all good productive members of society will leave. Let’s see the criminals and well fair recipients save the state.

Retired six years ago. I wanted to move to either Tennessee or Texas. My wife wanted to move to Florida. We are in Florida.

Same here. Retired in 2017. Moved to Texas. Oldest daughter and her family are here, so now so are we. Moved to the Dallas - Fort Worth area. VERY different. Talk about culture shock! They are pro police and pro military down here. Property taxes are about the same (where we are) compared to Chicago, BUT the other taxes are far better. Here grocery, Prescription and non-prescription drugs are tax exempt compared to Chicago ( groceries 4.75 and prescription and non-prescription drugs 3.75 EACH). It's not even summer and the daily temps have been in the 90's. So we either spend time in the pool or in the screen porch with the fans running. As far as the house is concerned, we intended to downsize but ended up with a house twice the size at half the cost.

And the best part......it's NOT CHICAGO!

Don't leave and move to Texas. The weather there is hotter than the hinges of hell almost year round. It is full of bugs, snakes and other unfriendly critters, and they are being invaded along their southern border.

What's wrong with Texas? Sure it's hot. All this week it's been in the 90's. Our answer to that.......swim in our in ground pool and hang out in the screened in gazebo complete with ceiling fan and bar. As far as the unfriendly critters, better the four legged than two. And best of all, the cost of living is much lower and the people are friendly.
And the invasion? They may be coming across our boarder, but thankfully they don't stay since they seek more liberal friendly areas.......like Chicago!

Real Estate Guy touts values of Medical/Dental care in Chicago as opposed to Nashville. Stuck in Chicago due to career, I tout values of plastic surgeons in Nashville. Have you ever been there and seen these broads? I don't care if it's plastic or not, they got perfect bods! Whoop-whoop!

Real Estate guy is a lot like Rahm, cheerleading because he knows his racket is up.

He still hasn't answered by question about Garfield Park real estate, either. I mean, downtown is bursting at the seams, right? If so, that would mean new, hot areas adjacent to downtown outside of the Wicker Parks, River Norths and Lincoln Parks would be feeling the effects.

Newsflash, REALTOR champ, even north side agents who were weighing in on the reassessment notices people received this week were commenting that they've seen a downward, sluggish trend as it relates to prices in relation to lack of supply. You should know this, but either you don't, because you're stupid, or you're living in denial (because you're like Rahm).

I did a Google search on the population of Chicago and found it at 3.5Mil in the mid 60's and it is 2.7Mil now. I don't remember much coverage about the loss of about 1Mil people from 1965 to 2018. And in the same period CPS went from 880,000 to less than 400,000 now. It seems to me that is a big deal, not this paltry 3,000 something as GN reported. And to the cop turned realtor, keep whistling a happy tune. Certain areas will be desirable but the cost and crime and corruption will eventually kill your golden egg dude.

The Get Rich Quick scheming mentality infests itself wherever it can.

Greed + Sloth = Minimize Effort and Maximize Gain

It's the basic urge of all gamblers, crooks, cheaters, thieves, grifters and the like, who shun the very thought of an honest day's work.

Thus, the "real estate" hustle is all about turnover.

Same thing for the "stock market" hustle, (buy low/sell high), which is not honest investing in conservative, productive and benficial ventures.

This lazy avarice is the cause of much economic distress in every society it's infection flourishes. Which is every society that has ever existed.

The wisdom of "You can't cheat an honest man" & "There's a sucker born every minute" has, and will, always be disregarded by some.

Those "some" are the marks.

The Purity of the Equalizer, which is Death, is, thusly, also ignored by the hustlers.

Until that time, Eustis, until that time........

-----This comment is EXACTLY CORRECT in reference to race relations outside of chicago. People that have spent most of their lives in Chicago have been brainwashed in thinking the whole country is racist . Living in Texas while in the military, I experienced nothing but racial integration. Inter-racial couples were the norm. Yes "good ole boys" exist just like militant white haters exist. The difference is that people do not make such a big deal about skin color outside liberal chicago. Having traveled quite a bit, chicago and most major cities are the epitome of racial segregation. Of course ran by democrats that rely on the victim hood vote. Remember what L. Johnson said about blacks? Anyway, get out, spend some time outside of Illinois and any other major city. Life is much better in the south.

"Chicago is booming. Not going to bust. Expensive condos, houses and luxury apartments being built left and right." Exactly! So why are property taxes and other fees constantly going up? If the tax base is getting bigger, property taxes should actually be going down. Look at Rosemont. They're raking in the dough with their business and convention centers. They then pass the savings on to their residents in the form of property tax reductions.
