Safe Passage....Expanding?
- Students from 14 more Chicago Public Schools will now benefit from the Safe Passage program designed to keep kids safe on their way to and from school.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel and CPS officials announced Sunday that the program will be expanded to include 14 more elementary schools: Sidney Sawyer, Ashe, Frazier International Magnet, Park Manor, Morrill Math and Science, Myra Bradwell, Richard J. Daley, McKay, Joplin, Lewis, Martha M Ruggles, Irma C Ruiz, Sherman School of Excellence and Warren Park.
But shootings are down. Homicides are down. Carjackings and muggings are up, but grade school kids don't drive and they don't have much money. So what's the deal?

- The Board of Education are expected to vote Wednesday to increase spending authority for Safe Passage by $1 million to pay for the expansion, according to a statement from the mayor’s office and CPS.
The Safe Passage program began with 35 schools in 2009. It will now serve more than 75,000 students at 159 schools. The program involves 1,400 Safe Passage personnel trained by the CPS Office of Safety and Security.
That's another few hundred more "volunteers" getting $10 an hour to watch kids go to school - something most parents and neighborhoods usually did for free. But there's an election coming up soon and Rahm needs to make sure there's pocket money floating around.

Not a bad idea, I like to see those green vest when I’m out working. There’s too many school drop-outs in this city. We can at least protect the students who want to attend school. Beside some parents have to work, therefore they can’t assist their children in making it to school safely. Safe passage worker are helpful to law enforcement too.

I went to school during the 60’s and never needed this nonsense what changed in Chicago? But then you can also include the rahm-Kimmy-tommy-Toni team rapidly releasing felons back on the streets and the city giving away millions to convicted murderers nothing can go wrong with that plan now can it?
Seems every blue (democratic) run city,state,county is having massive crime and budget problems, with shootings,murder and bloodshed rising to untenable levels (as if any level is tenable), incredible but it’s so true and sickening to watch these so call leaders just laugh at their wine and cheese parties,as they are protected by armed valets!
So safe children cannot even walk to school, and the elected leaders here talk “stupidly” (Obama educated word) about President Trump his style,as they have the children marching 2 by 2 off to school in line like soldiers being led off to war wasn’t that like what happened during the world war? Nice imagine children cannot attend school the answer is simply because the bastardizing of police officers by the elected and dishonest media who don’t stand up for law and order and the rule of law,with the court system who the judges are told to let the criminals roam free,and of course tommy the pizza king dart who is more worried about the criminals in jail than the sheriffs being beaten inside the recipe for disaster is completely filled!
What will it take to turn this city around? Several years ago the budget at Safety and Security for the Board of Education was nearing $50 million. All the while in In a manner making the Daley/Emanuel Dems proud spending so much on cameras and services from politically connected companies lay offs and school closing became necessary. It was getting to the point that they could no longer afford the cost of "protecting" the children. In typical City fashion with very little fanfare Rahm simply shifted some of the cost to the Police budget. What CPS used to pay for was now just another line item for the CPD.
When people hear, if they ever do, that the Board spends that kind of money on Security they are shocked. In fact, they think it can't possibly be true. That's more money than I would guess most School Districts in the state spend on their operating budgets. Yet, as SCC writes, here we are in an election year hiring more "voters" to part time jobs without any oversight.
So do these people walk each and every kid from home to school, or do they sit on street corners and get paid for it? Are they authorized to intervene if anyone approaches a child? Are they authorized to intervene if kids bully other kids on the way to and from school?
And what are these kids being protected from? Has there been a rash of kids assaulted on the way to and from school? Raped, mugged,etc.? Someone sitting on a street corner isn't going to protect them from getting hit in a drive-by. Are they protecting them from each other?
I seem to remember that when I was a kid the moms in the neighborhood acted as a pretty effective neighborhood watch. Too bad they don't want to do that anymore without being paid. It's not like they're all out working or anything.

In the 1950s the anti-segregation marches got hundred of marchers for access to better schools for free. Now the only way to get them to protect their kids is to pay them. The "community" should be so outraged at the need for the Safe Passage program. Instead it is an easy money trough.

I have been trying to resist making a comment on this. I was definitely expecting the mob to chime in with the, my mother made my lunch everyday and helped us with homework bullshit. Look, times have changed. These companies do not give a fuck you have a kid to make sure gets to school on time or needs help with homework. Many families and I do mean families are struggling financially and they do the best they can. Which means not attended the neighborhood school full of gangbangers and unruly asshole kids. Yep I am from the 70's, we walked to school, all of us, my mother did not have to work and was there when school was over. But it is different now. Your ass will get fired for being late or not get hired for having kids. The city needs a new policy on public safety, all of this is a bandage that is peeling off.

Just got hired for the "Safe Passage" program. I have my CC permit. I was told that I cannot carry while "on-duty" but screw that! I'm packing a Sig-Sauer .40 cal. with three extra clips every day. If some kid crosses against the light, I'm smoken that little MF'er. They need to learn how to live in a real and fair society. If there is "collateral" damage, so be it. Maybe the little MF'ers will pay more attention in math class and not end up working at a car wash. Yes, I voted for Donald Trump. Gary McCarthy for Mayor in 2019! Just ask DCFS who oversees this program.

I’ve run across all kinds of black young men who say they cannot work because of their disability that being asthma, one leg is shorter than the other etc. I have a white girl working at my Walgreens, who I’m sure is disabled, who is missing both forearms, has 2-3 fingers on each hand and eyes are all messed up. She still works.
The thing is, the more Rahm expands the program, the more likely it is kids get killed on these routes. As Sun Tsu (not to be confused with Sun Times) said: "He who protects everything, protects nothing." As Sun Times (not to be confused with Sun Tsu) said: "He who wears protection, protects everything."
