Define "Tourist"
- Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced Sunday that the city has reached a goal of attracting 55 million yearly visitors two years ahead of schedule.
The number of visitors to the city was up by 1.5 million in 2017, a 2.5 percent increase over 2016, according to a statement from the mayor’s office. Last year, 55.2 million people visited the City in a Garden.
“Tourism in Chicago means jobs throughout Chicago,” Emanuel said in the statement. “By continuing to set new tourism records and bring millions more people to Chicago every year, we are generating economic opportunities that reach every Chicago neighborhood.”
Averaged over a year, this is 150,000 daily visitors. Granted, weekdays are going to be lower, winter months are going to be lower, non-convention weekends might be lower still. Holidays and big events might be larger.
There are only a certain (limited) number of locations that tourists would frequent, probably less than 25% of the actual square mileage of the city - maybe as low as 15%? In other words, it's going to be more crowded in these areas - noticeably more crowded than usual. And we haven't seen it or heard about it.
We're not claiming ghost towns, but we aren't believing Rahm's numbers for even a minute. And given Chicago's propensity to exaggerate numbers for every event in the city, the media shouldn't be believing it either.

So true, I seen so many out of state plates viewing the west side and with the kids looking out the windows. A relative who lives in Florida told me that they met a couple who traveled to our tourist attracting city to attend a bears game. When the game was over, they decided to take a walk around the stadium area. As they were walking they noticed a group of people coming their way.
They tried to avoid them but were overtaken and robbed. There was a couple in a car who saw the whole thing and was trying to help them
after it happened. The Floridians didn’t trust them but accepted $40.00 from them to help get home? They didn’t make a Police report and said that they would come back for another game? Go figure!!!

First off I don't believe Rahm's numbers, period, end, stop.
Secondly, that first sentence is sort of contradicted by what follows, to wit: If 21 out of 40 (52.5%), conventions saw an increase in attendance, that means 19 (47.5%) Conventions saw a DECREASE in attendance. And the last part about seven conventions renting more space than previously means zero as to attendance, or tourism.
Also, what's not mentioned by Rahm or Chicago's intrepid reporters are all the Conventions that Chicago has LOST over the years due to the insane work rules at McCormick Place that Exhibitors have to put up with. Like HAVING TO call an Electrician to plug in a f--king Extension Cord! Or the outrageous prices Exhibitors have to pay for things like a Case of Coca-Cola. As I recall MANY Conventions that were a Chicago staple for decades have fled for Las Vegas.

A quick internet search turned up a Libune article saying that there are around 44,000 hotel rooms in Chicago. So are we to believe that all the hotels are fully booked every day with 3-4 occupants? Something tells me that Rahm is engaging in some of that creative accounting by defining tourism as any money spent in Chicago by someone without a Chicago address, e.g. commuters eating lunch.
For comparison, here in Minneapolis they're expecting around 150,000 visitors for the Super Bowl (plus another million locals who are only attending that NFL Experience thing at the convention center to inflate the stats and associated pols' egos). Every hotel room in the metro area is booked and many residents have rented out their houses for thousands of dollars a night. Roads are closed. Cops everywhere. Uninterested locals fleeing town for the weekend--I'm on the very edge of the TC metro area, not even in Hennepin County, but thinking I may go up to Duluth for a day or two to escape the mayhem. Granted it's a smaller market than Chicago, but not *that* much smaller, and this is what 150,000 real tourists looks like.

In the article, the 20 finalists named the other day are boiled down to 12. Three of the 12 locations are in the metro Washington, D.C. area and are named as the clear front-runners. That’s not capital gains tax. It’s considered income, just as it you won the lottery. A lot of times the contestants don’t take the gifts because of the taxes. Let’s say you win a high end China cabinet worth $10,000. Why take it if you are going to have to pay 2500 in taxes on something you may not want, need or have a place for. Those shows inflate the suggested retail price to make it seem the gifts are worth more. Paying taxes on a trip to Chicago I bet would be one of those situations

Second prize was a two week vacation in Chicago.
Wheel of Fortune did a week of shows from Chicago last year. The ChicagoLocations manager did a great job showing off the best scenes. The Bean, LSD, Mag Mile, Lincoln Park and such. The police detail also did a great job sanitizing the areas for the camera.

OK I detect sarcasm here. But if they want to track cops locations why spend money on tracking devices which have to be bought, placed, risk discovery and need to be retrieved. Probably much easier to track the cell phone locations.

Have you seen the numbers of people fleeing Illinois for other states who are more fiscally responsible? There is your increase in "tourism" numbers. Those are all former residents coming back for the holidays, to see family, for weddings and funerals and to get their deep dish pizza and beef sandwich fixes. I know that's why I go.
COPA should check tracking device on Merit Sgt. Cars while at work , some do not leave the station unless going to eat , visit a friend .
