Another Unworkable "Solution"

  • In a bid to crack down on car crashes caused by people texting while driving, Chicago aldermen on Thursday discussed the concept of arming police with devices to tell how recently drivers had used their cellphones.

So-called “textalyzers” could allow officers to scan phones and tell whether they were in use at the time of an accident, Ald. Edward Burke said.

“In many ways it’s the digital equivalent of a Breathalyzer,” he said. While a handful of government agencies around the country are looking at incorporating textalyzer technology in police investigations, none has done so yet, he said.

The 14th Ward alderman, however, did not propose that the Chicago Police Department start using the devices, nor was a vote taken. Burke, the longest-tenured and most powerful alderman, sometimes holds hearings merely to discuss headline-grabbing ideas.
Maybe this goof should keep his bullshit to himself for a year or two and see if actual problems get solved.

Vehicle leaves the vicinity of loud reports near Washington and Keeler. Refuses to pull over. That is until they hit a light pole at Grand and Sacramento at about 60 mph. 3 assholes injured, 2 likely critical.

No one shot.
No gun recovered.
3 assholes that'll accrue 100s of 1000s in medical treatment courtesy of taxpayers.
Easily a dozen-plus coppers risking their safety responding to assist.
Initiating coppers vilified and likely put through the administrative wringer.
Lawsuits guaranteed to be filed, punative damages always a reality.

Chicago will again be making payouts for violating the U.S. Constitution!

A better idea would be to get rid of 40 Alderman and their useless staff, as everything is done by callig 311 these days, in now the 3rd largest city and soon to be passed by Houston city to drop to number 4!

There's never any reasoning on their behalf. They somehow feel obligated to chase when we're reminded that the only 'reward' involved in such stupidity is avoiding a crash, catching all offenders, and MAYBE having a charge stick to their alleged crime. The disadvantages far outweigh this.

Last week the local Area Central Saturation morons chased a vehicle under similar circumstances from 008 to damn near La Grange before the offender's wild actions (driving onto incoming traffic) forced their hand. The pursuing units were notvresponding to dispatch about their speed, and they were even fumbling to clarify that they didn't onview shots fired OR were shot it. Instead, they heard shots from aroundcthe corner and witnessed a car speeding away. LOL. We all had a good laugh listening to their stupidity. Luckily no one was hurt.

Anyone who tells you that such a device can be made that 1) obtains privileged access to a smartphone to determine if texting has occurred during a specific period of time and 2) can be made in such a way that does not obtain access to absolutely everything on that smartphone — that person is lying. The way smartphones work, that simply isn’t possible. Only a politician would think it could be.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know how much bitching there would be, but do it a few times, make a big deal about it on TV and newspapers, radio, whatever then passengers would be doing all the talking, texting, twittering, whatever.
It would be like executing murderers, very damn few repeat offenders!

Why not make eating foie gras while driving illegal, or at least foi gras-free zones in Chicago?
After all, foi gras is made by inhumanely force-feeding a duck with a tube down its throat to enlarge its liver at the Sonoma Foie Gras farm in Farmington, Calif.

Sorta like the crap they want to shove down our throats coming out of the funny farm at 121 N. LaSalle St., Chicago, IL.

Burke’s mind is geared towards making money, not taxpayer safety.
All talk about paying attention, Burke uses his iPad to shop online during Council meetings.
It’s likely he has friends who developed some (unproven) technology and wants the City to buy the first 10,000.
Just like the goof who tried to sell a south side AlderStooge a bullet serial numbering ID system a year ago.
How did that go? The city was ready to buy into that.

Feral Sanctuary Chicago is continually driving without insurance and/or licenses, running red lights, drunk and drugged and hardly ever stop for police, all being released back on the streets.
There should penalties for enforced laws broken, not financial or cultural excuses.

How many feral urchins that are allowed to go about carjacking everyday are actually penalized for traffic violations, does that have any impact on safety? The feral youth don’t care about a drivers license or any future impact and politicians have no complaint.

Any additional cellphone ordinance such as Burke’s grand idea is targeting only those willing to stop and get a ticket.
It’s an insurance matter after the crash and no ordinance that’s already on the books will prevent the feral lawless from causing accidents.

You’ll never make a good courteous driver out of anyone in the ghetto.
Don’t stop anyone until politicians accept the responsibility.

Pass a law ( that states the Officers are not responsible for the Offenders who have made a conscious decision to run from the police ) as long as the Police vehicle doesn't crash into anyone we cannot be held responsible for the Offenders actions. I know I'm dreaming to many lawyers Maybe the real solution is technology. Maybe someone can develop a technology that when aimed at a vehicle it disables the engine. I know the vehicles power steering and power brakes revert to manual so what, better than the alternative of crashes and lawsuits ( and now with COPA termination and criminal charges) Technology is the only way to stop fleeing offenders

So I’m not the only one with this problem. I guess it’s a nice problem to have but could have been better
I totally agree with you about the Roth IRA. When I started in 1984 putting money into deferred I was in a lower tax bracket than I am now in retirement
At that time I had child deductions, mortgage, sales and star income tax were allowed and no 2 1/2 % for misc deductions or 7 1/2 for medical expenses
Any now with no deductions and the RMD kicking in I’m in a higher tax bracket. Guess that’s not a bad problem to have
But there are other problems like paying $267.90 Medicare for both my wife and I along with the $300 plus for Aetna Advantage plus the part D drug I have to pay Medicare that I can’t use because my Aetna advantage plan covers drugs. That over $1,200 a month in healthcare
Just one of many problems

Another big problem is if you invest in stocks, which is the only way to make big money in deferred because interest rates are so low, you loss the capital gains rate for the capital gains. They are taxed as ordinary income so you lose out on one of the biggest benefits of investing in stocks
A good way to go would pay taxes initionally start the Roth IRA and invest in an S & P index fund with very little fees. Vanguard and Fidelity charge like less than a quarter of one percent. Then when you withdraw the money it’s tax free not tax deferred
Warren Buffett one of the richest men in the world made a 10 year million dollar bet with a famous hedge fund investor to see if his hedge fund with high fees because of portfolio managing and professional advice could beat Warren Buffet investing in the Vanguard S & P 500 Index fund. It’s the last year of the bet and the hedge fund made $222,000 and Warren Buffet’s S & P fund made, get this $854,000 almost 4 times as much in 10 years. That what fees can do to you. And if that was invested in aRoth it would be tax free

An exert from the bet. The expert from the hedge fund with the expert advice and research surrender ed

By the end of the bet on Dec. 31, $1 million invested in the funds chosen by Seides would have gained $220,000 in the same time period that Buffett's low-fee investment would have earned $854,000.
Buffett's index investment bet is so far ahead of Seides' that the hedge fund manager surrendered the wager in May.
