Selective Outrage

The Slum Times jumps into it with both feet, bemoaning the fact that Chicago Police Officers have actual Rights granted to them under the Constitution:
  • Only in Chicago.

On Tuesday, a Chicago Police officer and a retired Chicago police officer both took the Fifth Amendment — declining to testify so as not to incriminate themselves — in two separate courtrooms in two separate cases.

What a sad commentary on the Chicago Police Department. What a sad reminder that reform of the police department must continue full bore, with federal judicial oversight.
Extremely ironic, given that the "federal judicial oversight" (A) isn't endorsed by the current federal administration and (B) is in place because CPD supposedly violated all sorts of Civil Rights, yet the Slum Times is championing CPD not being allowed to exercise their Fifth Amendment Rights. You are considered LESS than a citizen by the Slum Times.

Particularly galling to the screeds at the Slum Times?
  • [the officers] ...declined to testify or repeatedly said, "I don’t recall."
Amazing.

Now let's enter the "Way-Back machine" and time travel back to October of 2013. Richard "Shortshanks" Daley is being deposed for only the fourth or fifth time in his illustrious law career regarding a Millennium Park restaurant contract, one in a series of crooked contracts that seemed as common as west side gunshot victims:
  • During depositions for the case, Daley answered "I don't recall" 139 times.
We don't recall Sneed ever removing her lips from Daley's ass long enough to mention that. Assorted other Slum Times reporters always managed to snag underlings, but never questioned Shortshanks. Not if they expected to keep their reporting beats, maintain "access" and be spared the wrath of Daley. And that was involving tens of million of dollars - hundred of millions over Shank's political tenure.

So much for unbiased reporting. The media in Chicago is bought and paid for, publishing what they are told to publish, hiding what they are told to hide, and ignoring facts detrimental to the Machine.

A favorite pundit of ours said it best:
  • Journalism is about covering important stories. With a pillow, until they stop moving.
He said that about the national media coverage of Hillary Clinton. Amusingly, he lived in Chicago, so we don't doubt local politics may have colored his take on things.

Remember thats how they got Burge during civil testimony. If you are ever sued in court and the original incident passed muster with IPRA or IAD, your subsequent testimony in a civil trial opens you up for at the very least receiving charges in front of the police board.

OT Check this out on youtube 4:18 min. "Durbin calls out AG Sessions for threatening to cut off federal funds" At the house oversight committee meeting on Wed. Dick, the Dick, Durbin tries to embarrass Sessions by saying withholding the Byrne Grant funds will hurt Chicago because it is a sanctuary city. Durbin cited the Superintendant who says he wants the police to to focus on "community policing" and not play immigration police. Durbin said they need the money for the shot spotters. Sessions was great he did not let Durbin rattle him. Sessions said all they want is a call when an illegal is in Chicago lockup. Sessions told Durbin, how are you making Chicago safer by releasing these illegals to commit more crimes? Sessions also said he is concerned about the health and morale of the Chicago Police!

025 3rd Watch

The district commander has issued an order. To obtain Friday, Saturday or Sunday off. Instead of 10 percent it now has to be 15 percent of the watch. Trying to get fri, sat or sun off is next to impossible. You need both time on the job and burn a personal day on dome weekends.

What is interesting is that the park car gets an exemption. They can change their rdo's every week. That must be nice. Also, if you are the commanders girlfriend then you get lots of overtime and you choose your own hours. Also sgt. E.R. and his crew have it made. In at 1730 and out by 2100 to 2230.

Must be nice! Life is a beach (for some).

Most of the articles were hit pieces on Trump, no mention of Harvey Weinstein, and the whole tabloid was a blend of moral filth and hypocrisy. I have not seen this rag in many years and cancelled my subscription to the Trib when they endorsed Obama's re-election. I recall back in the day when the department had a rule about taking the 5th. Officers did so and the department suspended them and tried to fire them. It took a federal judge to stop that nonsense. A lieutenant that I worked for was called before a grand jury about corruption in the 015th District. He testified that he could not recall. He was indicted for perjury and spent a few years in prison.

The newspapers always send lawyers to criminal court on heater cases insisting the public has a right to know. In cases involving police officers the press has insisted that any CR numbers and reports be produced. But, they are not so enthusiastic about the first amendment and the public’s right to know when it comes to them. Several years ago, Rose Laws, the Gold Coast Madam was pinched for running her call girl service out of some high end buildings in the Gold Coast. The Feds also indicted her for income tax evasion but the raid done by CPD netted Rose’s so called Black Book with names, phone numbers, dates, times and the kinks of all the clients. Now, you would think that the press would be clamoring for the names of the Johns to be revealed. You would be wrong, however, because the word got out that the Black Book was chock full of the names of newspaper and TV news people as well as lawyers, businessmen and judges. I remember being in court when the case was up for arraignment. Not a reporter or newspaper lawyer in sight. In that case apparently the public’s right to know was not that important. Ms. Laws quietly plead out in both cases, received a reasonably soft sentence and the Black Book never saw the light of day.

Re: shrinking Sun-Times
Background: The Sun-Times always had an image
of being the paper of the working class, the blue collar
worker. Chicago is one of the last two-newspaper cities
in the country, and the place that gave America Studs
Terkel and Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle."
Edwin Eisendrath, a former school teacher and Chicago
Alderman, is now (part) of an owner group of The Sun-
Times. A Chicago native, Mr. Eisendrath grew up on
Chicago's wealth North Side and graduated from Harvard.
Sadly, this is NOT the Sun-Times that featured Mike Royko.
Mr. Eisendrath is distantly related to the Sulzberger family
which publishes The New York Times.
Most papers (due to Internet competition for news) are a
shadow of what they were in the 1970s, The Wall Street
Journal included. Advertising is the name of the game today.
Newspaper men refer to the number of columns and pages
as "real estate." Content real estate has been shrinking while
advertising real estate has grown.

Is FOP lobbying to get us the ability to lateral out of Chicago to other departments in Illinois?

10/19/2017 12:38:00 PM

I can do that on my own....why would someone need FOP to do that?

10/19/2017 10:26:00 PM

Why? Because some guys on the job want someone to do things for them, that they should do

Anyone know if the 2018 Chicago Budget includes bringing back captains to the watch?

They would need at least 66 captains.

How would we know? If you want to find out Google Chicago 2018 budget and look it up

This kind of reminds me of when the DA in Baltimore suggested that the officers in the Freddie Gray case should not have the right to choose a Bench trial instead of a Jury trial. 2 sets of rules, 1 for regular citizens and 1 for us!

10/19@12:38pm - The IL Municipal League is lobbying the legislature to greatly restrict pension portability between Downstate and Chicago area pension funds. They successfully passed a law which will prohibit a LEO who vested in a pension fund from starting a second pension if he/she is hired by another agency. And our beloved FOP has done nothing except scheme to launch retirees from Lodge 7 if they do not pay retiree dues by the end of October. Graham is Rahm's new lap dog. Being assigned to Rahm's house detail while running for office effectively neutered him.

I recall a Sgt. Phil Cline pleading the 5th back in the 90's. That just ruined his career.

It was the early 1980's.
