- A new Cook County court in the North Lawndale neighborhood on Chicago's West Side aims to bring victims of nonviolent crime face-to-face with the offenders to hash out a resolution, officials said Thursday.
The Restorative Justice Community Court, the first of its kind in the state, is slated to begin operations next month. Under the guidance of community members and a judge, defendants, victims and their neighbors will agree on solutions to hold defendants accountable for their crimes.
"This is truly the people's court," Judge Colleen Sheehan, who will preside over the new court, said at a news conference. "It is the community that has the wisdom and the humanity to do this."
Right. We've seen what Foxxx is re-classifying as "non violent" and what Dart is allowing to bail.

- The approval of victims is required, and defendants must then agree to accept responsibility for the crime.
Restitution agreements will be hashed out in a confidential "peace circle" in which the victim, the defendant and community members will participate. If the defendant follows through on the agreement, the charges can be dropped and the arrest expunged.
Accepting responsibility for anything would be a step up for the North Lawndale "community." Peace circles though - we see a lot of spontaneous dice games breaking out.

The community you speak of wreaks havoc on a daily basis, has very little wisdom and as far as compassion one only needs to count how many children and innocent victims are killed on a daily basis.
This concept should be given a chance. Restorative Justice is way, way out there, with people who "feel" that anything they do is justified because of oppression sustained by their grandparents. However, the concept of Conflict Resolution by court intervention, rather than exclusively using the court as a punishment, is an interesting and if successful possible new direction. However, it is limited to petty offenses. The real issue is Unrepentant Violence and its consequences. No amount of Peace Circles or judicial compassion or resolution, will serve as restitution for the innocent bystander who is pissing into a plastic bag for the rest of his life because Mookie's marksmanship was bad that day. This would be a great idea in maybe Park Ridge or Wilmette; but the types of crimes affected by this in "Shitcaga" are not the issue. Ghetto Violence, in all its foul and evil personifications is the issue, and this does nothing to address that affliction. Meanwhile, be careful, Rahm has your back! Baby "G"

I read the list of crimes considered "nonviolent" nowadays. This community "people's court" is a friggin joke, a waste of taxpayer dollars, and a way to keep criminals on the street.

I seldom write anything on this blog., but reading about this court where victims and defendants reason it out, is completely nuts. If its civil cases, then maybe it might work. If we are talking criminal cases, then whoever, thought this one up, should be taken away and put in a rubber cell. It's not only a stupid idea, it's crazy and dangerous to have some poor dope think he/she can talk sense to a criminal. If the Rev's, Father Flacky, liberal media, BLM, Jesse and Al, liberal politicians, and a cast of many more haven't convinced these people of the righteous path to salvation; then can someone tell me how this new approach to justice and peace circles is going to resolve anything. It's just another way to game the system in the criminals favor and regular people are going to get fucked.

restorative action has been in illinois public schools for a while now. it has proven to be a failure for reform and causes more unstable children and incidents in the schools. teachers have no form of control of students behavior. no one goes to class, they hang out in hallways after the bell and forget about if your kid is getting bullied. that is the cps everyday life rahm won't show the public but still wants 500 million from the state. where is the transparency, show it all if you are going to show any. same should be for body cam footage, if you show one you have to show all. otherwise it is not transparent nor fair. but the democrats don't care if it is fair, just what is good for them and their agenda.

Judge Colleen Sheehan i can say without any doubt or hesitation hates police and shows in her rulings and how she treated a particular case. I've informed FOP about this for last 10+ years and many times, they luckily did not endorse her. I sure hope they remember this particular judge is NOT A FRIEND OF THE POLICE
They already have that. It is called Conflict Resolution. What happens is the defendants come to court and perjure themselves and resolution is worked out. However, the defendant's gang friends continue to attack the victim until they move or submit to sex trafficking and or robbery and murder.
this concept has had some success in other parts of the country. It is being pushed by a white lawyer who lives in Lawndale. He holds "peace circles" in his office. This court is only intended for minor property crimes and minor assaults. Judge Evans stated, and I heard him say this, that if a thief and victim are involved in this type of court, the county will pay for any stolen and lost property. He even mentioned television sets. Thats right. Insurance,if the victim has it will not pay for a stolen television set, the county, that is you the tax payer will buy the victim a new television. By the way, the white lawyer blames all of the crime and violence in Lawndale on " hyper policing" as does Preckwinkle. Thats right officers,YOU are the problem.

I suspect many of the cases will be settled before they go to court. Maybe 15 to 20 minutes before court time when the victim, knowing where his/her tormentor is going to be, gets to extract his/her revenge.
Or maybe a friend or pissed off family member gets revenge while the victim is sitting in the courtroom, witnessed by the everyone, including the judge.

Kim Foxx had nothing to do with starting this. It was started by a white lawyer who lives in Lawndale who has been holding these peace circles in his office for the last few years. Everyone sits down and talks about the crime and prays. This new court only applies to Lawndale but probably will spread around the city. It is a way of keeping people out of the criminal justice system.
Will there be a Deputy Sheriff assigned to the peace circle? If Dart can't staff his court rooms due to a lack of staff, will he send Hanke Gratteau with her shiny gold badge? Will She ghost write a story for Mark Brown?
