Reading is a Skill

Evidently, a bunch of tiny-brains don't know how to read an entire post. We'll put it up here again so you don't miss it:
  • [Comments in which the only point is "do work or quit" will be deleted as per policy. Same with rip jobs on 016 "lazy cops" and crap like that. The same rules apply to all cops all the time - the enemy is management violating the law that would cost any normal cop his/her job if they did it.]
If you read the right hand side of the blog, you'll see RULE #7:
  • Grammar nazi stuff = delete. Same goes for comments where the entire point is "quit the job."
But about thirty of you didn't seem to get the message. There were also a bunch of comprehension-impaired individuals who insist on claiming we typed things that don't appear anywhere in the posting:
  • We "endorsed" the ACLU - where exactly? We said they monitor the blog. That's true.
  • We are "legitimizing" the ACLU. Are you dense? Legitimizing how? THEY READ THE BLOG. We warned everyone. They've been reading it longer than you probably.
  • "Fuck you SSC." Wow, good for you. You can spell "Fuck." Too bad you can't spell SCC.
  • We are somehow "communists" for pointing out the fight is against management. Dude, do you even know how to red-bait? Were you born after the Iron Curtain fell? You're an idiot.
  • We are deleting "people who disagree." Again, reading is a skill - learn it. We said we were deleting posts that relied on "rip jobs on 016 "lazy cops" and crap like that." If you have a point, make it. If you can't without resorting to the stuff that we TOLD YOU we were going to delete, then that's on you, and you're obviously a moron.
  • We are "sticking up for the dogs." Again, where? We clearly stated that rip jobs would be deleted, because we didn't feel like wading through the crap that inevitably shows up in posts like this, where the only "real cops" are from [pick a district.] We know plenty of "real cops" in slow retirement districts and they went there to get away from the daily ghetto grind. Some of them brag about getting a total of three paper jobs a week, while we slog a dozen-plus. Good for them - that doesn't make them "dogs." That makes them smart. We aren't going to get into the manpower thing again - 016 has cars sitting idle every watch because there aren't cops to drive them. 011 has cops riding three and four deep because there aren't enough cars - we have emails from them all. Someone not backing up another cop is inexcusable. If it happens where you work, make noise, file a CR - oh wait, then you're a "rat" or something. We're lucky - dogs are few and far between where we've been. Don't blame us for what the Department has become.
  • "It's only one stop, what's the harm?" Yeah, and it was only $2.00 when the health care costs started. Let us know how that one is looking on your check lately.
A quota is bad police work. Period. Once you start down that road, nothing good has ever come of it. Feel free  to disagree, politely and making sense, within the vast latitude we've defined. Otherwise, don't expect to see your comment - we don't feel like wading through the crap.

I could see the point in not doing anything in communities that don't support the police. But in 016 where residents like the police and thousands of cops and city workers live how could you seriously drive around all day and not do anything? There are plety of coppers that would love to work there and would actually do poloce work.

A real change would be to demand accountability from management when it comes to quota based policing. We talk a big game about what to do when the topic is brought up by management. But does anyone ever do it? I think if we were to call them out (through the proper channels) these silly moments would go away.

But in order to do all that, you must rock the boat.

That may have been true then, but what's true now is that there are no more "bosses" on this job. Only puppets.

Only "go along to get along" types who just want the pay bump and the extra pension.

Other than that, real supervisors no longer exist.

So, answer your calls, back each other up and do what you have to.

Most communities, even those in 007, 011, collectively support the police. We're just coming in contact with the anti-police, criminal element at a much higher frequency. I understand the idea of "staying fetal," but your wrong in believing one area deserves more police work over another.

Police 016 the same as you would 015 or 011 and watch how quickly you're screwed with by the community and management. Ask anyone who has ever worked there and they'll agree. Also be prepared to answer for every type of significant call you didn't prevent. Where were you during the robbery? Where were you doing the auto theft? Where were you when the building was burglarized? To work effectively in 016 (or any other police district) you have to THINK first. You cannot treat people the way many do in these other districts.

You will effectively provide more of a presence (and possibly prevent crime) driving around all day than sitting in a hole (as many do). Or pulling over every vehicle you encounter to appease management or fulfill VRI. You will also serve that area more being available for a call then transporting one into 016 for a TVB, and the entire beat (in a district already undermanned) is now without any car. I don't know about you or anyone else, but where I live -- I dont care if the beat car pulls over anyone. Just be available to respond to whatever comes up, because we all know we cant be everywhere at once

Be smart about how you police. Does 1 good stop a day with documentation REALLY change anything? Of course not, it's only a management tool to get a little out of everyone so activity for the watch is respectable. By no means am I suggesting to do nothing in 016, but don't extend yourself to get numbers

In case you haven't been paying attention, your "dream job" has gradually morphed into a nightmare.

This is something your three generations of family on the job can break down for you, as they (ostensibly) have seen its heyday and ultimate decay over those years.

Also, and not begrudging your age because I'm an old man myself, this is a young man's game. Jumping in on the ground floor at close to 40 isn't something most of us with time OTJ would recommend, even if you're in decent physical shape.

Then there's having to live in this hellhole, pension funding woes, healthcare/insurance issues, rigged promotional opportunities, historically shitty contracts/raises and my favorite: being treated as second class citizens while illegal immigrants are regarded as more important than first responders in this World Class (sanctuary) City.

Seriously... if you [still?] have the ability to make 'fantastic money' without risking your physical, mental and financial well-being with regularity - as is oftentimes the case for us low level CPD blue shirt grunts - dismiss this dream as frivolous. Unless you're hooked in and will be gifted with a cozy, do-nothing insulated spot immediately after your training cycles are complete, I wouldn't wish this job on my worst enemy.

You're welcome.

That "one" stop may be someone u know or family of someone u know. Fuck this department when they think they can dictate when and how we do police work. Find yourself a college that offers 'life credits'. Usually, you have to write a paper or submit a project, but you can pick up about a year's worth of credits just by paying tuition and not much else.

Then, please, choose another career path. Being the police is not what you want to be doing with the rest of your life. Been there.

RATHER THAN MAKING ONE QUESTIONABLE STOP for some piddly traffic no- no, just to appease some stat- watcher .

There is ONE quota that is acceptable and that is to answer all calls for service dispatched and execute quality rights based police work when doing so. This how to meet any requirement for promotion - doing good police work.

Someone asks how a cop can drive around all day and not do anything, how can that possibly be? ! ?! I know, how about when patrolling an area where nobody is doing anything wrong, bothering anyone else or like stealing or shooting at anyone or anything in malice?

Cops who bother Citizens for the sake of "doing something" are the ones that give cops a bad name, give policing itself a bad name. The day a cop doesn't have anything to do is like a day a fireman has nothing to do - a GOOD DAY! So quit ruining it with stupidity.

If you value yourself and you love your family,
cast your bucket down anywhere else but CPD.

Seriously...

If you have the law Enforcement itch, be The Police
where not only it's appreciated, but you don't have
a target on your back and you're not considered a
societal "Less Than" by virtue of having sworn an oath
and wearing a particular color suit of clothing.

(Analogy:
Police Uniform = Red flag in front of every enraged bull in the
general vicinity. Prepare for yourself and your ox
to be summarily gored repeatedly.)

...Let alone having an emblem of office pinned to your shirt.

Every man according to his conscience and that which
he thinks will allow him to stand before his God...

As for being short on college credit?

Check with your local accredited institution of
higher learning and inquire about C.L.E.P.
(College-Level Examination Program)

You can test for a limited amount of college credit
at 3 semester hours per successful exam.

If we remember correctly if you sat for everything,
it worked out to approximately half the amount of the credit
required for an Associate's Degree.

Good Luck.

I beg to differ with you, but when we started paying for health care it was $5 a paycheck. Or for the math challenged, that would be $10 a month. And for those of you who weren't there it was because the Chgo Fire Dept went along with it. It did go to arbitration and we lost. The arbiter stated that $5 was a fair price and that paying, even that amount, was inevitable. And from there the city raised the rate whenever they could. And that's the story.

A few colleges give life experience credit to students who enroll. Calumet College of St Joseph and Lewis University does also, don't know about St Xavier. Basically you write papers on how your work history, things your accomplished etc can be allied to some of the basic academic requirements. You just pay for the number or hours you are applying for, and them actually go to the classes one day a week day or night to finish your degree. Worthing those papers might put you at the hours you need. Call either of them and inquire. It might get you there. Your not going to walk out as a rocket scientist... but you get some college lernin.

I'm sorry boys and girls, but your supervisors do have the right to know what you do during your tour and do have the right to confront you if they feel that you are not doing your job.
Much of the law is based on a standard of being reasonable. Is it reasonable that a police officer can go his whole tour without seeing something that could be addressed either by citation, arrest, or verbal warning? How about 2 days, 5, 2 weeks, a month? At some point it does become unreasonable and they can take actions to correct the situation. In the suburban departments you would be fired for consistently bringing in zeros. As far as naming people in a list, they do have the right to identify possible "issues" and make corrective measures. In fact, that is expected of supervisors. That being said, putting a direct number per day on citations would constitute a quota. Expecting at least one stop or document-able interaction is not a quota, REQUIRING one (or definitely 10) would be. But good luck trying to convince joe citizen or a judge that it is ok for you to do absolutely nothing while the murder and crime rates keep going up.
The big issue is that the cpd promotes people into supervisory positions who have absolutely no qualifications to properly do the job. There are ways to address these issues without demanding specific numbers and black listing officers. Any supervisor who currently has a watch that is "out performing" last years numbers by over 30% should be thrilled, not sending out naughty lists. But this is cpd, the land of very few real supervisors.

and I differ with you 1.) it was 2$ a check and 2)an arbitrator cannot make any decision on an issue that was not opened up in negotiations, therefor if the Union(Dineen, Degelo, and the rest of their ilk) had refused to even discuss it the arbitrator could not have entered it into his decision.

Remember it well as that was part of the ticket slowdown contract, that we voted down and since we voted it down the city refused to negotiate with us, but since health care was in it it could be considered by the arbitrator

If you studied lawsuit and discrimination you will know that grading is impossible.

1) what does a lock up keeper, desk officer, commander secretary or old guy hiding get rated for NO activity for years including parkers?

2) You will notice on those cute evaluation white shirts do are very bland. You were given templates for evaluations because many supervisor would write blatantly stupid shit which would lead to lawsuit sexism yadda yadda yadda.

3) Supervisor have NO RECORDS! do you keep a file on each of your beat cars? calls for service case reports made etc?

4) sergeants AINT really management! They don't hire, fire, or chose personal.

5) If you rate 1 desk person above a dog ass copper who have no numbers but actually have the same title code what do you call it. What happens no if that dog officer is Gay, Black,Female or any other flavor protected by law.

so go ahead ask for all the preprinted TO FROMs that you do not retain by law and throw in the garbage. WHITE shirts have to fear being under the bus too.

The white-shirts on this job are tone-deaf. So it's about time they feel the crush just like the beat copper has for the past few years. They're not getting any activity out of me just to make themselves look good at the next circle-jerk.

And for those who asked what this job will look like 20 years from now...just walk into your neighborhood post office and get a good look at the postal employees. That's exactly what this job will look like in the near future!

To 0225am. As much as that Harold Washington college is useless you can sign up for College Level Entrance Program or CLEP tests. You may be able to accumulate 20-30 hrs by taking 3-5 tests all within a matter of a month. English math Spanish and others. By now it may cost about 100 or more per test.

Wrong. Kind of like the old policy of 10 and go. The intent is still there. "The law prevents police departments from assigning an officer a specific number of citations to issue in a given period of time and also stops agencies from comparing officers based on how many tickets they write."

Again the department is in violation. But don't worry you will keep your job at VRI doing the assignments.

I worked in a north side beat heavily populated by city workers and it was a miserable experience. I'd rather deal with the modest expectations of some ghetto area than a beat where EVERYTHING is under a microscope. I was one of those who policed the "homecfront," pulled over vehicles, wrote lawful contact cards (in the distant world of several years ago) and ANOV'd whenever possible. One warm summer month I arrested (with signed complaints) someone related to a CPD boss. It was unknown at the time, but even if it was the arrest was unavoidable. Next week I'm off the car and my start times screwed with. Bosses say they're looking to shake things up and there's no hard feelings. Luckily within the month I was onto better things outside the district level

Fellow officers act like it's a dream to work the homefront, but make no mistake - you will still have your share of incidents to jam you up. And if the command staff (Commander, LT, Sgts) live in the beat you're working, be prepared for unreasonable expectations. Of course the likelihood of an OIS is reduced, but don't discount the possibility. Look at what happened in 022 with the funeral procession. Or in 019 outside a CVS.

To (way off topic) you may go to the City Colleges of Chicago main office and pay for some tests. e.g. math (algebra), Spanish, English whatever topic you pay for this tests, once you pass the test they will provide you with 3 credit hours per class, so a total of 12. {which would be equal to english 101,102,103,104}. You have to pay for the total of what would be 12 semester credit hours though. hope this helps you out. Good Luck.

The locals might not be so supportive if the cops develop a reputation for ticketing 36 in a 35 zone, stopping random people for really lame reasons 'just in case,' and other such shenanigans that the quota mindset encourages. Food for thought, yeah?

Scc, I stopped reading this blog years ago... Couldn't stand all the Monday morning quarter backing and internet tough guys. I only looked today because I heard about the posts about Tony Escamilla who I knew years back, and he was a stroke back then. But seriously dogs have been a few and far between in the units you were in? Gimme a break I'd love to know what those units were. Let's face facts, being generous 20% of the personnel in every unit are dogs. I'm not talking about the officers who did their time in the grind and have slowed down. I'm talking about the ones who were never the police and have dogged their jobs and if they caught one held it down for hours on end. Or sat back and basically watched everyone else work since they got off their status. For those who waited until they had enough time and moved on to a retirement district, God bless them, but you're not retired just because you went to 016, or 022 (which has alot of shit going on so I wouldn't call it a retirement district). You have a job to do. Especially if you go to 016,008,022. Us cops who are working in the ghetto are counting on you to watch out for our families while we are out there running around in the hood. It would fucking suck coming home at 3 or 4 after a late arrest to find your garage has been broken into or something worse because a dog was working your beat that night and no one saw him cruising around and making some stops at least for a little bit.

Before you vomit out some more bullshit take a look at the Rules and Regulations of the Chicago Police Department and then read the SPAR matrix and check off the shit you do daily. You're welcome fool.

(Way off Topic) I apologize for my rant, I'm between a rock and a hard place, soon approaching 40 years of age, going through CPD process with half of the college credits needed to get hired, is there anyway(s) to get fast "College Credits" and or sign any type of waiver or promissory note/form to finish college and that will get me in the CPD??? Life, ultimately was very busy for me raising a family and making fantastic money straight out of H.S. "CPD" has been a dream job of mine since the age of 5. Long history of Family on the Job, 3 generations long. Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thank you! God Bless.

++++

You were busy...for 18 straight years (21-39)... now you suddenly realize it's "now or never?" Jesus Christ man, enjoy your job. This job sucks and if it takes you 18 years to scramble on something you've always wanted to do, well, it might not have been something you really wanted to do...

You should be laughing at their comment, because you're a 39 year old MAN that people are calling "kid."

I don't know where you were but when it started it was two dollars a check. That's what the fire department agreed to and that's what started the whole mess

Couldn't agree more. I was there and it was definitely two dollars.

Saw Arena walking out of a business on Milwaukee with gallons of the stores product. Coincidentally, the owner of the shop was spotted at the rally working the door for Arena. Strong armed in so many ways.

"There are still some Great Supervisor out there. I am one, among them. I still work the Districts. I inform the troops, I back them up, I take care of them in my ways, we have a professional working relationship and Respect runs both ways. We even hang out from time to time off duty. You guys know these Supervisors and by the I'm Sergeant. Let's be fair now, quite over reacting and throwing all Supervisors under the bus."

If you are what you say then you're the exception not the rule. You're fully aware of that, so when you're done patting yourself on the back perhaps you can take some time telling your fellow white shirts they might get the respect of the troops if they spent less time being stone cold one way pricks.
