Turnabout

  • The police officer who shot and killed teenager Quintonio LeGrier on the day after Christmas will sue LeGrier’s estate.

Officer [...] answered a domestic disturbance call in West Garfield Park and wound up shooting LeGrier and a neighbor, he says, because LeGrier attacked him.

[...] attorney Joel Brodsky confirmed for WGN-TV this morning that he’ll file a civil suit against LeGrier’s estate in a couple of weeks, citing emotional distress and assault.
Police have sued assailants in past cases and won substantial judgements. Perhaps this would dissuade the city from making hasty settlement officers that only encourage and exacerbate the "ghetto lottery" culture. Well played Officer.

Its about time someone grew a pair. If the City fought some of this crap they would get some respect. There would be less lawsuits filed by the catered to constituency.

Avg Citizen here.

How often do the city attorneys settle rather than fight cases? From an outsiders perspective, it certainly seems like they settle frequently. Now, whether the person was guilty or not is irrelevant to the ignorant public, because when the city pays out, the public isnt viewing as "Oh, they would rather settle and save court costs and move the process along". Its being viewed as "You KNEW you did something wrong, and now you are paying out because the cop was GUILTY!!"

I know its essentially an open checkbook, since the taxpayers are footing the bill, but I would like to see some of these attorneys fight something for a change. Take a stand and show the taxpayers that you have a spine. Although the legal fight may be more expensive, it will show people that they have to start taking accountability for their actions and cant just assume you can get some criminal defense attorney to sue every time you dont like how an officer looked at you the wrong way, as you were committing a felony.

Im personally glad that this officer, who likely has had his world flipped upside down, is going to sue the family (Im guessing the city attorneys are going to face a lawsuit from the "family" of LeGrier, get paid out, and then the innocent woman's family can hopefully sue them for her death due to the actions of the kid who attacked the cop with the bat) for assault and emotional distress. Maybe it will dissuade people (re: thugs/animals/criminals) from assaulting and/or bringing violence to any officers in the future.

Im sure that a lawsuit against someone who is broke is pretty much worthless, but this will at least send a message of some sort. Good luck to him.

Fire with fire. They don't play by the rules, ever. Whether it's life in general to get something for nothing, or using any legal ghetto lottery move to get something for nothing. I remember the days when politicians were scared shitless of decent, law-abiding tax payers. Not any more, The person who has the power now is the one who has a press conference in the lawyers office. It's the person with the biggest mouth. It's about time police start playing the same game.

Who speaks for you? Nobody. Put together a crew of pro-police righteous lawyers who aren't owned by anyone and can't be bought and have them out in front of the cameras representing logic, law and common sense after all the other assholes are done flapping their useless jaws. Force the media to present some perspective into their reporting and make the bottom feeders think twice because they know someone is going to be there for you to back them off the base.

Rules were designed to give you rights. Rules are not supposed to be twisted to hurt decent people or used against you. Stop playing by the rules. It doesn't work anymore. You may have one Superintendent, but your department is being run by many people with different agendas. The Communists (ACLU), Politicians, Aldermen, The Mayor, IPRA, the ghetto lottery attorneys, "Reverends" protecting their banger constituents. ALL have one way or another wormed their way into the CPD hierarchy for their own personal political or financial gain. ALL are influencing policy without any regard for your contract or what is right, just or morally defensible. And what you have is chaos. Take advantage of the chaos.

When you guys go down, society goes down.

I applaud this officers decision to sue the estate of Quintonio LeGrier. The 'fathers' decision to churn his dead son's death into millions horrifies me. Quintonio LeGrier was a ward of the state, that officer, everyone who works, pays taxes, supported Quintonio LeGrier through his childhood. The mother was an abusive monster, and that sperm donor 'father' left his little child to be tortured and abused. The officer did nothing wrong, I do believe the officers life was in danger. Since the officer has been named, I'm sure there are threats and his life has become a living nightmare. All the officer did was protect himself and others from an abandoned, angry individual wielding a baseball bat. The officer did his job. This is a tragedy on so many levels and the officer's actions, fighting back, clearing his reputation by bringing a lawsuit, has been ridiculed in the press as frivolous. I believe his actions are heroic.

Some of us asked for this decades ago, and the FOP back then cited something called the Fireman's Exemption, which basically states something to the effect that if you accept the First Responder Job, you assume that you may be injured, killed etc. However, some states have made exceptions, and the issue of negligence and Criminal Conduct can change the game. For example, if a building is in violation of codes, and the owner knows it, and now a firefighter dies fighting a fire in the building, the family can sue for wrongful death. The issue here is by ignoring the violations you have committed a crime, or are in contempt of court. So, if someone is committing a crime, coming at you with a bat is an Aggravated Assault; and you shoot them to survive, and avoid Death or Great Bodily Harm, YOU, the Officer are in fact a victim. What the FOP and their attorneys for years have failed to "Accept" is that Cops are the victims in OIS situations! When we took the job we accepted the danger and potential for injury or even death; but we did not give up our right to defend ourselves and SURVIVE! Anyone who wants to be a punching bag or a target is welcome to be, though I hope you are not working with and endangering a partner. Otherwise, as Human Beings, cops have a right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and hopefully compensation to be made Whole Again, following being Victims. This litigation may be a Game Changer, and the Officer and most of all his attorney(s) have balls, and I wish them success in this pursuit of justice for every cop. Baby"G"

And should turn into a movement because NO employer, private or public, should be allowed to tie the hands of their workers. Maybe I'm paranoid, but I have been suspicious of the father based on the speed with which he found a lawyer. This was a father who did not raise his son, the kid having chosen to stay with his foster mother instead of living with his sperm donor. The court allowed that, apparently until he was 18. The kid does well, finishes high school, gets admitted to an engineering program in college.

Then, he starts staying with the old man on weekends, begins having problems with the police and others in his college town. I know that schizophrenia often appears in late adolescence, or that he could have been ingesting substances with his friends.

But it could also be that the old man gave him drugs with or without the kid's knowledge, savoring the thought of a huge payout like McDonald's so-called family.

I believe that those whom are willing to shoot at the police are hardened to the core at birth. No amount of love or affection will ever change that. They are ticking time bombs waiting to go off. The good thing is, they are very rare.

Most of our encounters are with uneducated, coward, pussies. They were born that way, and they will always be that. I don't believe hands off policing will change them into a hardened police killer. Hopefully...I am right.

If the attorney can be successful this will certainly set a precedence for the future.
I've said before that attorneys have filed judgements on many reckless individuals for traffic accidents and simple negligence cases.
I was at a depo for a traf accident I handled, the attorney suing joe in a personal injury case, said you never know what somebody owns, may inherit or wins in a lottery one day. Turns out dude had multiple 3 flats hidden in his assets. The judgement gets paid one way or another and dude is going to have to liquidate and settle.
Even OJ was sued for wrongful death and it prevented him from future riches.
Go for it, for any reason. It's a great payback against these lizards.
I hope it works out and he keeps us updated.

Please do yourself a favor and read the book(s) on this subject if you want to know the full truth. It will shed even more light on the Democratic coverup.

I get the gist of what you're saying, honestly I do, but by coming to a conclusion from watching a movie..? YOU have not been following either....

He went to NORTHERN, not Eastern.

And do not call me the Spell Check Police, or try to say it was the "damn auto-correct".

Facts matter, know them.

He was prescribed PSYCH MEDS, by a physician.
His mother stated she told him to stop taking them.
There you go; a non-conspiracy theory.

Well mom, he obviously did! Sue her also.

Unless they sue the city and win, of course.

Beg to differ, but he went to Eastern THEN Northern. Google it. He's listed as an incoming freshman at Eastern.

Hmmmm...alot of this still seems to stem from black ghetto's in this country like Englewood are pretty much un policable. Can't really say if lawsuits like this will fix anything in the long run. Notice the attitude against police officers is insanely without end.

What a great strategy! Dead boy's estate probably consists of 2 pair of Jordan's, and maybe a rusty old .22. But once the city coughs up the settlement, BAM! Reverse ghetto Lottery!

You forgot the bat. That's got to b worth at least $20.

AM 560 Dan Proft, the loser Governor candidate and non-practicing lawyer slammed Officer Rialmo's civil attorney on radio this morning claiming that he, Proft, new that the 'cop' was too far away from the perp to have been at risk of harm from the perp. The lawyer hung-up on Proft and Proft said that he couldn't take it. Proft and his ilk will never understand and do not care what police officers have to endure on the streets.
