Signed Up for Sgt. Exam?

Only three more days. Get signed up ASAP so if there are any issues, they have time to straighten out the problems.

Payment of "fees" is due before the first weekend in September.

Payment to aldercreatures is due shortly after that.

Expect some sort of letter with test dates and location(s) within the next 60 days, after the summer crime finales.

How much do you have to pay the aldercreature to assure promotion to sergeant?

Can it be any aldercreature, regardless of ward?

I already know that the "campaign donation" has to be in worn non-sequential large bills.

Yes you can do it from home. 1. Access your department email. Just google Chicago Police Department webmail or such and you'll get the link. Create a generic resume since they want you to submit a supporting document. Save that resume on your computer. 2. Sign in to it the same way you sign in to your computer. 3. Look for the email for the sergeant's test. In that email is a link to sign up for the sergeant's test. 4. Signing up for the sergeant's test is pretty basic. You'll need to submit your resume. There is a section for it and they say if you don't submit anything then your application won't be considered. So do that. When you are done, you'll see a page stating that your application was successfully submitted. Save that page or print it out. 5. In your email that you recorded in your application check for the payment link. You have to pay $25. Pay the $25 and make sure you either print out or save the confirmation page.

That's it and study for the sergeant's test so you can wear that white shirt!

I had no phone call or chinaman and wouldn't have used one anyway because I'm one of those people who wouldn't want to spend my career owing somebody. I should have made Lt, too, but I spent my 17 yrs as a Sgt. pissing everybody off that was above me.

There are many families that have mentally challenged members. Many in the police family. Your thoughtless use of the slang 'tards' speaks volumes about your character. I am glad you are not taking the promotional test. You would be a poor, pathetic bastard to work for.

I know YOU would never have a chance at promotion, so I offer this to the rest of you: Most promotions are done legitimately. There are even Merit guys that deserved it. I have worked for a few.

Sure there are a percentage, maybe even a big percentage that have the in, or didn't deserve the merit bump. That still leaves a lot of promotions for guys that work for it.

Take it seriously and work your ass off for one of THOSE spots. Tell the bitter guys that give up to grow up.

I'll save you a few bucks. This is free:

Pick a time and place to study everyday and do it there & then-- ALWAYS.
0900-Library,1800-BSMT, 0200-Garage... where ever........
Condition Yourself to this,It works.

No studying in the squad or in the station.Distractions(other Coppers, walk ins, radio, man w/a gun) will screw you up.Don't Do It!

Print, or whatever you do now a days with the orders, and HIGHLIGHT anything that says "The Sgt must, the Sgt is responsible for, the Sgt will ensure that..."(You get the clue)

Keep those HIGHLIGHTED Orders, and in addition, write out all of your HIGHLIGHTED items on a legal pad under various headings.

Study from both.

Never took a Bernstien, but a Ret. Dick had a class back in the days(90's) at a suburban college that went for about a hundo.Have no idea if he is still in the game. Wasn't great, wasn't too bad either.Pretty much DNA as far as the test I took, but practice none the less.
Good Luck to those who DESERVE it.

The above officer is incorrect and will most likely fail the Sergeants Exam. You DO NOT create a resume! If you READ THE DIRECTIONS prior to starting the application they read as follows:
"NOTE: NO DOCUMENTS ARE REQUIRED TO BE ATTACHED TO YOUR ONLINE APPLICATION."

The link to the application was never emailed to me in my Department email. This is the link for the application:

www.cityofchicago.org/policepromotions

You can leave the attachments section alone and go on to the next section. My application was submitted with no problems.

At one time in the not too distant past it was five grand to the alderman to make sergeant. I heard it was 25 grand for captain. There is a retired district commander whose name ended up on the city hall political list to make captain. The list surfaced during a federal trial.

Years ago we were subjected to "affirmative action" and many, many promotions were stolen from those who scored well on the exams and given to others who had lower scores. That happened to me on one detective and two sgt. exams over a period of more than ten years and I was very bitter.

Another sgt. exam was announced and many people criticized me for subjecting myself once again to what they saw as a waste of time and effort in studying for the exam. They were also bitter about the previous exams and had given up on advancing their careers within the CPD. I thought if I give it my best shot and don't make it at least I can still bitch about how screwed up the promotion process is.

I had no clout, seventeen years on the job, was an FTO on the first watch. When I had no recruit I was usually on the wagon. Got the test results, good score. People congratulated me on a good score. However I had been down that road before.

It wasn't until I saw my name on the order to report to the academy for sgt. school that I believed it was possible for someone without clout to be promoted.

Non-clouted do get promoted. Study. Study. Study. Then study some more. Stop watching TV, especially sports. No radio. No social life. No nothing until the test is over. That is the recipe for success, of course , without guarantee. Care more about how whatever team is doing? Save yourself $25. and don't take the test.
