Detroit

We were just reminiscing about the past. A little over a year ago, Mitt Romney said to let Detroit go bankrupt, that a complete financial overhaul of the city, its corrupt practices and restructuring of debt was probably the best route for the beleaguered city. He was speaking as a businessman would with a company that was bleeding money. Remember all the democrats and media making fun of him for actually considering a city the size of Detroit could (or should) fail?  Silly Mormon businessman.

In a completely unrelated story, we just heard that following an eleventh hour appeal to the Obama administration, Detroit filed for bankruptcy on Thursday, placing the city residents, its employees, its retirees and its creditors in financial limbo:
  • Detroit filed the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history on Thursday, setting the stage for a costly court battle with creditors and opening a new chapter in the long struggle to revive the city that was the cradle of the American auto industry.

The bankruptcy, if approved by a federal judge, would force Detroit's thousands of creditors into negotiations with the city's Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr to resolve an estimated $18.5 billion in debt that has crippled Michigan's largest city.

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder said he saw no other options for Detroit and approved Orr's request to file for Chapter 9 bankruptcy protection.

"Detroit simply cannot raise enough revenue to meet its current obligations, and that is a situation that is only projected to get worse absent a bankruptcy filing," wrote Snyder, a Republican, in a letter accompanying the filing.

Detroit's creditors are expected to face huge losses, and the future of retiree pension and health benefits for thousands of city workers hangs in the balance.
  • Buried in the middle of the report is a telling climax to this sorry tragedy:
Any hope of a federal bailout to avert bankruptcy fizzled last week after Mr. Orr spoke with the White House, including Obama confidante Valerie Jarrett, according to city and White House officials.
This is where blue governance has brought Detroit in the end: not even a liberal Democratic administration will step in to save the pensions of thousands of public workers and African Americans, condemning countless innocents to having their pensions and health benefits gutted in bankruptcy court.

Blue model defenders will point to the cruel exodus of General Motors, the unjust outsourcing of American manufacturing, and the general unfairness of life in the big city as the culprits in the slaying of Detroit. But these champions of the marginalized should keep a few facts in mind.

Detroit has been spending on average $100 million more than it has taken in for each of the past five years. The city’s $11 billion in unsecured debt includes $6 billion in health and other retirement benefits and $3 billion in retiree pensions for its 20,000 city pensioners, who are slated to receive less than 10 percent of what they were promised. Between 2007 and 2011, an astounding 36 percent of residents lived below the poverty line. Last year, the FBI cited Detroit as having the highest violent crime rate for any major American city. In the first 12 years of the new century, Detroit lost more than 26 percent of its population.

And now Detroit’s desperate request for a bailout has been turned down by the Obama White House.

Progressive politicians, wonks, and activists can only blame big corporations and other liberal bogeymen for so long. The truth is that corrupt machine politics in a one-party system devoted to the blue social model wrecked an entire city and thousands of lives beyond repair. The sooner blues come to terms with this reality, the greater chance other cities will have of avoiding Detroit’s fate.
But hey, those Republicans are evil sons-of-bitches, aren't they?

I think it was as recent as Oct 2012, Obama told us all that he would not standby and let Detroit go bankrupt.

Oh well, there goes Chicago's sister city.

Meanwhile, there are stories floating around with propaganda on how Illinois surging coal exports (that are up five fold) are going to save Illinois.

Oh yeah. The stories go on to tell us that for every million tons of coal something like 1,200 jobs are created.

Funny thing is try and find all those so-called jobs in the bls employment reports.

They're not showing up in mining. They're not showing up in transportation.

Furthermore, the off shore coal exports are offset by a reduction of coal use in the USA....which by the way means that we lose out on things like sales tax revenue and the associated trickle down.

And not to mention. Burning of high polluting coal goes against Obama's very own green energy programs to fight global warming.

You see how that works?

It's okay to export the coal to burn it because it's out of sight out of mind. Like Asia, Japan, the UK have a different atmosphere and when the coal is burned over there it won't effect us over here.

Obama boasting the fight against global warming restricting domestic coal use, while Illinois democrats are boasting coal exports and the plan to double the exports of coal.

Illinois politicians, you WILL NOT SEE any of them talking about global warming when it comes to coal. OH NO, it's all about "coal creates much needed high paying jobs" Coal is glorified.

You need to verify EVERYTHING that the main stream media is putting out EVERYTHING.

If Obama cared about global warming at all he would of placed caps on the mining or coal. However, doing that would definitely hurt the economy and corporate profits and so we get this phony Kabuki Theater bullshit.

Like the latest assault weapons ban. Don't do something meaningful, just look like you're doing something.

So sick of this corruption.

I really hope that EVERYONE is watching what is going on in Detroit.

How different is Chicago compared to Detroit? Aren't we also in a multi-billion $ shortfall in pensions?

Time to realize nothing is guaranteed - especially in a "corruptocracy".

AND the big thing that should really be seen as you pointed out SCC, is that there was NO federal bailout. That means Uncle Sam isn't coming to the rescue.

Like any other municipality facing huge budget shortfalls, Chicago can do one of several things -

CUT spending (but in a Corruptocracy that is so hard to do),

INCREASE revenues (this is always the Democratic solution but there are only so many dollars you can demand and it isn't working because people are staying away from the city)

DECLARE bankruptcy and start over (the Detroit Plan)

Detroit will become a verb as in, "We got "Detroited"."

I would cut a lot of BS programs like the speed camera around schools project. No frivolous projects should be initiated at this point.

Hm, I would guess that means it's time to blame Bush. I mean, that is the extent of any liberal's ability to analyse the events of the last 10 years.
There is no other way to explain any of their domestic and fiscal policy overreach, incompetence, corruption and failings.
Those who would continue to vote in Quinn after his pathetic tenure under Blagojevich, and absent a single bit of influence from a non-existent presence of any Republican or dissenting party in Springfield, seem to welcome the same disaster here with their delusional voting habits.
In a similar vein, no one wants to compare Youlala Musafzai, a girl willing to endure attacks on her young life, dedicated and now synonymous with the struggle for dignity through education no matter the cost, with Rachel Jeantel, an illiterate slob deemed a hero for what? After 10 years, at least, of free housing, food, education and healthcare, she embodies everything that is wrong about the way this country doles out money without regard for consequences and responsibility.

With Detroit bankrupt the entire state is at risk. I wonder what the exodus rate is for the state of Michigan apart from Detroit?

How long until the Detroit police and firefighters bail? Imagine a city with no police or fire dept....and imagine the caliber of new hires that will be available? What happens when all the city workers who keep the infrastructure (as shitty as it is) intact just walk off the job?

A large amount of Detroit pension funds were invested in Detroit business ventures that failed. The pension funds lost a boatload of money.

The bumper sticker that came out in the 70's has finally come true....

Talk about dirty dealing MF'ers, from the Detroit Free Press:

Race to courthouse
A sign of just how contentious the matter likely will remain came as pensioners and their pension funds made a last-ditch effort Thursday afternoon to stop the bankruptcy filing but were beaten to the courthouse by minutes.

An attorney for the pension funds who was seeking a temporary restraining order in Ingham County to block the historic bankruptcy filing said he felt blindsided because he agreed to delay an emergency hearing by five minutes at the request of attorneys for Snyder.

During those five minutes, he said, attorneys filed the bankruptcy petition in Detroit, which generally results in a stay in all other pending lawsuits involving the city. Ingham County Judge Rosemarie Aquilina later issued a temporary restraining order preventing further actions to cut pension benefits, but said she would have issued one to stop the bankruptcy filing altogether, if given the chance.

The judge said the bankruptcy filing was made at 4:06 p.m., five minutes before her emergency hearing began.

A furious Ronald King, a lawyer representing Detroit’s General Retirement System and the Detroit Police and Fire Retirement System, said he agreed to the five-minute delay that he now believes was not requested in good faith.

“There’s no denying this was a race to the courthouse this afternoon and yet another example of usurping the will of the people,” King said.

Snyder, in a telephone conference with reporters, declined to comment on King’s accusations, citing ongoing litigation. He conceded that recent lawsuits may have affected the timing of the bankruptcy filing by “a day or so,” but said the filing was imminent regardless.

Union sees hurdles
In an additional court filing late Thursday, the city said it is insolvent, which is one criteria that must be met before a court can approve a petition for bankruptcy.

Still, a top official at the city’s largest union, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 25, predicted a tough challenge for Orr to prove the city’s eligibility for bankruptcy, required for the case to proceed.

“I still think they have some hurdles to cross because I think they filed prematurely,” said Ed McNeil, special assistant to the president of AFSCME Council 25. “I don’t think they’ve proved insolvency. They have a list of people they can’t pay, but there’s an even bigger list of people they are still paying, and they have a bunch of friends and consultants getting paid. They haven’t been doing this process in good faith, and we’ve been saying that all along.”

Orr, who in June released a plan to restructure the city’s debt and obligations that would leave many creditors with much less than they are owed, had warned consistently that if negotiations hit an impasse, he would move quickly to seek bankruptcy protection.

BUT, the BIGGEST failure has been the death of capitalism which has been replaced by corporatism. Corporatism knows no mercy, it has no morals, has no allegiance to any country and exists solely to enrich its owners (shareholders).

Who will invest in that broken down bankrupt cesspit? Maybe the large population of ignorant, public dole dependent, sit on their asses and moan for more free stuff mutts who are left. The older retired pensioners who faithfully contributed to pension funds while their corrupt, incompetent government failed to do their part won't have any money to enable a rebound. It's hard to be dynamic when you're hungry. The Federal government already has placed enough millstones around the taxpayers' necks. It long ago ran out of earners' and producers' tax money and sooner or later will be forced to stop electronically creating more money with only debt to back it, through the corrupt private Federal Reserve Bank, which is neither Federal nor does it have any reserves. It only protects the wealthy and powerful bankers with tax dollars. Detroit won't rebound, the rest of the Country will follow it down the drain.
Stupid people and those with their hands out keep voting for Democrats who keep pushing us towards the brink, and the Republicans can't seem to come up with anyone or any plan to stop it.

Michigan Judge rules that Bankruptcy petition
Should Be Dropped

By Steven Raphael & Megan Durisin - Jul 19, 2013 1:52 PM CT .

A Michigan judge declared that Detroit’s Chapter 9 bankruptcy filing violated the state’s constitution and ordered Governor Rick Snyder to withdraw it.

Circuit Court Judge Rosemarie E. Aquilina in Lansing today criticized Snyder, a Republican, for rushing the filing into court yesterday before she could rule on a bid by city workers and their pension funds to consider an emergency request to block the filing.

“I’m finding the actions that were taken in filing bankruptcy as overreaching and unconstitutional,” she said.

She ordered the governor to direct Detroit emergency manager Kevyn Orr to immediately withdraw the bankruptcy petition. She also said he cannot authorize further filings that would impair or diminish public pension benefits.

Just saw where a group of law scholars and commentators stated that a circuit court has no say in a federal cankrupcy case. This goofy judge handwrote the order and sent a copy to Obama. I wouldnt put much creedance in that order

Gee, how far is Illinois and Chicago's pension troubles about to become like this? I hope you retiree's got other types of income. Perhaps the city would let me cash out my pension fund and move it into a safer investment then the current system?

Perhaps you are an idiot. Yea, the pension fund is going to let you cash out. I'm sure they already mailed you the check

I truly did not know it was possible to accidentally inhale ham off an open-faced sandwich, which is what just happened when I read the above. I think I have some ham in a lung. That can't be good.

Except that another judge then came out and said a circuit court judge has no jurisdiction over a federal case filing.

Um, Romney meant let the auto industry go bankrupt.

The editorial he wrote with that headline was all about how US auto makers would be better off going down the tubes.

It had nothing to do with the city of Detroit.

Those sillies in Detroit should take a tip from Daley the Lesser. In the middle of the night move to Canadian border to encompass Detroit.

BTW, the Lyle Lanley of the Parking lot Fiasco has been given an OPED in the NYTIMES calling Chicago parking meter system one of the world's best and insinuating Detroit could've improved with one of those deals.

The link is to Crains.

When people go bankrupt they take away property and sell it!

You are telling me Detroit has no asset to sell.

Miles of vacant lots...
----------------------------------
Sell? You have to have a buyer in order to sell, genius.

If you look at the current real estate market in Detroit, you have a lot of sellers wanting out and NO buyers.

Seriously, that market is NO market. You have to have buyers in order to complete the transaction.

Evidently, you did not hear about what they got for selling the 80,000 seat Pontiac Silverdome.

It cost them over $55 Million to build back in 1975, and they got a measly $583,000 in 2009 for it. This included 127 acres of parking.

That's the price of some of your Exempts' summer homes or less than J-Fled's condo.

That's about a penny on the dollar for all you who don't have a calculator. Would you sell your house for a penny on the dollar?

That would mean selling your $583,000 house for $58.30 - that's the "market" up there.

Again - you have to have a buyer in order to make a sale. There is no market for vacant lots up in Detroit.

Not a LEO, JAFO

My friend from Detroit, recently bought his childhood home from his parents, when they retired and moved away. Cost today: $30,000. (I've been there, it's a very nice home.) Cost in 1976 (when his parents bought it) $36,000.

Chicago will be experiencing a similar fate, if we keep traveling down the socialist/democrat party road!

Chicago=future Detroit. Look at our bond rating!

----

Are you serious?

Gary, Indiana will sell you the first lot for I believe $100. Additional lots are $25 each.

There are still many vacant lots for sale.

Letting the US auto industry go under equates to letting Detroit go under. Company town. Companies die, town dies.

Read Dewey From Detroit if you wanna see what happened:

"Five black men have run Detroit for nearly 40 years. Although Archer, Cockerel and Bing are all decent enough men, none of them - for no doubt complicated reasons – could turn the legacy of their predecessors’ graft, corruption, cronyism, and bloated union contracts around.

But the point remains: Detroit has been served exclusively by Democrat leadership since 1962, and exclusively black Democratic leadership since 1974. Coincident with that 50 year period the city began a steady state of entropy that culminated in the bankruptcy filing yesterday. "

Does that mean you're happy with Chicago's and Illinois' state of affairs? All white governors and one black mayor. Don't mention Sawyer,he kept the seat warm for Daley.

If you're worried about Chicago going belly up,simply quit the job, withdraw your money from def comp and;withdraw the funds YOU contributed to the pension plan and be forever free. Move to Texas or Mississippi.
