Honesty Lands Man in Hot Water

  • A Nevada man got himself arrested Saturday night after acknowledging to Greyhound security officers that he did indeed have weapons and ammunition in his luggage, authorities said.

About 7:30 p.m. Saturday, as part of a routine security inquiry to all passengers getting on the Greyhound bus at the South Loop station, Daniel Fenstemacher was asked if he had any weapons with him, police said.

Fenstemacher, 52, of the 600 block of Record Street in Reno, replied that he did, police said, and he was detained while weapons and ammunition were recovered from his luggage, which was already on the bus.

So was this a violation of Greyhound policy or what? Airlines will ship weapons under certain conditions. Amtrak, too. You can transport weapons in your own personal vehicle as long as they are "cased and unloaded," essentially in a non-functional state.

We're these loaded and ready to go? We mean besides being in suitcases, four feet below the passenger deck, locked in the steel luggage compartment. What aren't we being told about the weapons and owner?

And this security "screening..." How would that work for a suitcase with a few pounds of Semtex and a terrorist who declined to tell the truth about it?

Greyhound has a no gun policy. Don't no the whole story as to why he was arrested.

Prior to 9/11, I was in college and heading down to Georgia to visit family.

The cousins and I always enjoyed shooting, so I hauled down 8 pistols in my carry on bag, so we'd have something to play with while we were there.

I guess times have changed.

Locked, that is, until the next stop, when anyone can really walk right up and take anything out of there, and you won't know it until 72 hours later in Los Angeles. (gah).

Only reasonably safe place for anything valuable is A. on you B. carry-on bag locked to the rail of the overhead rack with a little cable or something.

Rather than get the thieving currency exchange and all the pimps and dealers and hookers out of the convenient downtown station, Daley shoved it out of the Loop entirely, made it farther away and more expensive and dangerous for ordinary people to get to. Not his kind of place.

Now they're playing Airport in there. They never could control anything but the paying customers.

Bring your own drinking water, bring soap, towels, toilet paper, anything you might need -- and just hope the driver doesn't decide to preach the Gospel for 300 miles.

Sadly the Truth only gets you into trouble these days. Truth used to be a virtue. Probably not in today's world.

Which security officers were they? Was it that joke called a TSA? That worthless agency is a bunch of pedophiles, sexists and thieves. I personally would not arrest this guy but I've seen similar situations on this job where someone would admit to having a dime bag and then a white shirt hyper ventilate and demand the person to be arrested.

Greyhound does have firearms and ammo on their prohibited list: http://www.greyhound.com/en/docs/greyhound_prohibited_items_list.pdf and don't seem to have any exceptions if they are declared like the airlines do. It doesn't mention anything about being subject to arrest. Only that they would follow local laws. There is nothing illegal about passing through Illinois or even Chicago with a firearm as long as you are traveling. If he is a felon, different story but if he is just an average joe, no crime.

Quick question:

Can L.E. carry on trains and buses, or does it have to be checked in your baggage?

"So was this a violation of Greyhound policy or what?"

It's a violation of federal law, there is no way to take a firearm on a bus legally. Buses are covered under the same act that created TSA.

I believe it is in the fine print on your ticket for both the bus and rail lines that you will not transport weapons. Not a criminal offense by itself, but they will deny you boarding. Both the rail and bus lines have state and federal law enforcement profiling for weapons and drugs.

guns are not legal on interstate buses or trains. I don't recall if it is an obscure regulation or law off hand.

technically, it even applies to off duty cops. and LEOSA does not apply since it is not a state or local issue but a federal one and lEOSA does not override federal law.

even when checked as baggage. the NRA tried to deal with the problem legislatively not real long ago but I don't recall if it went anywhere.

Federal law requires that a person notify the operator of a common carrier that they are transporting weapons....

As long as he appears to be of middle-eastern descent and TSA isn't "profiling" him, it's perfectly okay!

Last time I was on Amtrak, their police said LE could not carry per wriiten rules, but those rules were not enforced.

Talk about wacked-out regulations. I'm former CPD and now a current federal agent (not the kind that fucks with coppers). I can carry a gun on my person on commercial airlines traveling anywhere in the US or any US territory, even when I'm off-duty - as long as I don't consume alcohol. However, apparently I cannot carry a firearm on an Amtrak or on a Greyhound, not that I would take a Greyhound anyway.

If you owe the gov't money and you're a citizen, they want to take your passport but if you're an illegal alien not paying taxes they don't require you have an I.D. or pay your fair share of taxes.

The G is jamming law-abiding Americans every way they can.

The only rationale I can find for such a policy is that they are looking to push everyone in to being a law-breaker.

If possible, Boycott Greyhound. Also write them and tell them to get there head out of there asses.

If it's the Feds and or the IL Dems, 'just another reason for people to stay clear of here.

How screwed up is it that they jam an honest American exercising his 2nd Amendment Right and they let out thousands of shitbirds with law-breaking history to shoot indescremanently throughout Chicago.

So why'd the guy answer "Yep!" for? If they don't know about it, you don't need to tell them. He should have kept his mouth shut and no one would have been the wiser - which is precisely why those laws are so asinine.

This is another way to oppress the poor. Can't afford to fly and take your guns by checking them through? Then you can't take your guns with you, sparky, AND you'll get arrested to boot! Stupid rule.
