Off Duty Wounds Two Assailants

  • A woman and a man were shot by an off-duty Chicago Police officer in the Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side early this morning.

About 1 a.m. the off-duty Chicago Police detective shot a woman in the head and a man in the hand near the intersection of 15th Place and Albany Avenue, police said.

[...] Pat Camden, a police union spokesman, said the detective was in his car in the 3100 block of West 15thStreet and was stopped when he ran across four people on the street who were causing a disturbance.

When he told them to quiet down, they approached his car and one of them raised a gun and pointed it at the detective, said Camden.

Officer is fine, but it's going to be a very long summer.

Don't get me wrong I'm glad the detective was not harmed and these pieces of shit got what was coming to them. But I'm wondering why an off duty detective would give a shit about a group of people being too loud. Come on folks we have to be smarter than this. When your off duty call 911 that's all your required to do. What if the bad guy would have gotten off a round? Now he have a tragedy. And for what? A noise disturbance. Just saying

If you are off duty get on your cell phone and call for some help if you plan to get involved. Going in by yourself always ends up going bad. Now we have two jagoffs shot and their lawyers licking and screaming at the city hall door for money. The city will certainly give these animals money to get rid of them. Doesn't pay to get involved off duty with no back up.

OT: Just wanted to say a "Thank You" to the two officers that stopped a car load of gangbangers yesterday in the area of Hiawatha Park. I just happened to be driving by at the same time. Part of me wants to say to all officers...its not worth getting involved today, BUT it is great when I see pro-active police work protecting our neighborhoods. Thanks and stay safe!

The Tribune seems to have rewritten the story you linked to -- it's no longer "four people," but "Off-duty Chicago detective shoots couple."

What's a "couple" where you've got 17 people in a house, none of whom have the same last name, and all of whom will reflexively lie about even their first name?

What determines "couple" now - mere physical proximity for a few moments?

Pushing the readers' emotional buttons...

I wasn't there so I won't say the detective did anything wrong. No one knows but him. It is plausible that he was blocked due to the commotion, asked them to move, they start mfing him and he tells them to quite down and it deteriorated from there. I doubt the detective was out looking to squash a bs noise disturbance as was asserted by people not there. We all know how it is, there are a plethora of possibilities. Just glad he's physically ok. I pray he also faces no bs flack over this but that's asking a lot

If you're off duty, ya don't see or hear anything. Especially if it doesn't affect your's, your neighbor's or a family member's safety. If it means that much, call the on duty Police and let them know you're close by for witness purposes if necessary.

Off Duty means being a ghost...

You work in a doo-doo city, county and state with a doo-doo court system and a doo-doo electorate that in spite of all that is decent, has managed to keep a doo-doo political structure in power for 60 years which in turn has filled local media full of doo-doo assed, slanted and biased reporting which is in turn eaten by the heaping mouthful by the electorate which in turn will squat and expel selfsame on a Copper in a heart beat just because he wears a blue suit and a shiny star on his shirt.

Heh... In light of all this, people get really stupid & angry when they find out Policemen aren't so willing to "take one" on the chin anymore.

"How come you guys don't '...' anymore like you used to?" Because nowadays that means your family being reduced to poverty and homelessness while you're doing multiple years in federal prison courtesy of Obama, U.S.A.G. Holder & D.O.J for "violating" some catered to constuent's right to violate the rights of everybody else in society. (Ain't that a purple & gold bag swingin' BITCH when you really think about it?)

Making a fully justified call to "do something to make things right" Is hardwired in a Policeman but if a society finds it expedient to throw the Policeman to the wolves for making such a call, you can surely bet your ass that the smart Policeman will ALWAYS err on the side of preserving his freedom, his career and protecting himself and his family from any and all harm the current season of popular hatred toward The Police embodies.

We dare ANYONE to walk a Chicago Policeman's walk and say they would feel differently.

"WAAAHH! You signed up and swore an oath to us!"

Please... You want willing and smiling martyrs. Somebody to hang from the tree while you wipe your brow and say, "glad it ain't me!"

Only fools throw themselves away for nothing.

Certainly a nice rumor to float around in an attempt to boost falling moral don't you think?

The fearless leader was on the radio just this morning preaching about how more cops on the street is not necessarily the solution.

More cuts are more likely. The main thing holding back any changes is this NATO thing.

What is Mccarthy saying? We have to connect the dots with gangs? Gnags retaliating against each other? This is new? Back in the 1970's we had maps with hat pins to show crime and where the gangs were located. Not computers. Tact teams and the ols SOS knew who were the gangs were and when shootings would happen. Ask any young gang member. Now in 2012 the Supt comes up with this new idea? Really?

Off Topic, but relevant:

It seems like FOP never has any news to report regarding the Contract, NATO, promotions, etc.

The Executive Board spews the same propaganda every FOP meeting regarding grievances including medical, DSPs, call-outs, IAD and IPRA meditations. I used to look forward to attending the monthly FOP meetings, it was a way to get away from the wife for a few hours, and learn about what's going on with the job. Now, I'd rather stay home and listen to my wife's nagging rather than the FOP rhetoric.

Seriously, in regards to the contract, is there a contract negotiation team in place? Does FOP have a strategy for negotiations? I hope everyone knows the contract expires on June 30th.

As we all know, FOP knows nothing about the contract, but they sure can tell you about the next: fishing tournament, picnic, vest safety day and health fair.

Granted that these are benefits to the members, but who really cares about this stuff. I'm sure the membership cares more about promotions and the contract rather than some blood test given by a health care company that probably gives kickbacks to the FOP Board.

However, I did get a good laugh when that ET called out Shields and Company. She's has major juevos. Why isn't that hearing for the charges filed against the FOP Board open to the membership?

Us in Chicago not much. The less evidence the better.
Please REMEMBER "gang on gang" violence is much more acceptable than a law abiding citizen taking the law into his own hands.

Look at the incident in Florida. Just like in FL., if you are not a gang banger or hoodlum, the "community" will protest and bring in the Justice Dept. to get your head if they find out who you are.

Because that is what the statute says. Kids are juveniles up until their 17th birthday for misdemeaners, 18 for felonies. For certain offenses, some with a firearm, a juvenile can be charged as an adult at 15 or 16.

That's how it is. Don't like? Lobby the legislature to change it. Good luck.

You might be ghetto, huh?

So why don't you STFU then?

And please, please do not attempt to get back to me here and say what a great area it is or how he/she is struggling to make it and had to buy there. BS, the same people who live in these crap ways are the ones with the MB, Lexus and Infiniti cars with rims at work.

I have know the dick involved for many years. Great Guy, coppers cop. He lives in the area and has been for years. This was an unavoidable situation for him. Everyone saying shame on him I would correct you. Shame on you for Monday morning quarterbacking what happened.

Amen. You weren't there. Be quiet.

While I'm on the subject; if a group of fed up property owners decided to ventilate a group of gang-bangers, how anxious would you be to take us in?

3/21/2012 02:15:00 PM

It appears you are not writing about defending your life, but about just wholesale discharging a weapon at a group of people because you are convinced they are banging. If that is the case, getting arrested might be the least of your problems. When the bangers are injured by your actions, they will sue you and take everything you have accrued in your life. Then the wife leaves you and the kids grow into major assholes while you are fighting in both criminal and civil court. Subsequently, after serving your time in prison, you will have no family, no job and no home, and you will wish you could have a Mulligan. Think about it.

The real problem is that the criminals have no respect let alone fear of the police. They will challenge us every single time to see how far they can push and how much they can get away with. When an officer backs down from their intimidation tactics it makes it that much more dangerous for the next officer that encounters this criminal.

Twenty years back it was not often that you would hear of a police related shooting or police officers being shot or shot at, now that goes on almost every day. Back then if we chased someone with a gun, they would run a bit then pitch it somewhere now they up the gun and shoot at the police with no regard for human life.

The problem now is that there is no deterance effect as was the case in the past. Criminals feared the police because they understood that there were consequences for their actions. A criminal knew that if they ran from the police they would get a severe attitude adjustment when they were caught which made them think long and hard before they ever tried running again.

What the citizens of Chicago need to understand and realize is that police work is not pretty and proper at all times, sometimes we have to get downright dirty and nasty to be effective at our job. We have to control the situation every single time. If a person is being irrational and confrontational, we can not just walk away and let someone else deal with the situation. We are the last line of defense in this war against the evil in our society. To secure the safety of our citizens and their property we have to get down in the trenches and do the dirty work yet we conduct ourselves with integrity and remain professional at all times.

All we ask is for the police departmant to provide us with the essential tools and equipment as well as the necessary manpower to do our job safely and effectively. We ask of the politicians and the citizens of Chicago to give us the benefit of the doubt even when what we do is not pretty and proper. Don't be so quick to throw us under the bus and realize that what we as police officers are acting on behalf of the citizens of Chicago to ensure the Public Safety.

"I see another "kid" got arrested for the Logan Square assault and rape of the suburban girl. My question is this, why are kids in a situation where it is a brutal, vicious crime charged as juveniles? This is clearly a situation where you should get years in prison, fuck that. Not some mental word or audi home.

"Seems to me that since they used his name in the newspaper he must have been charged as an adult"

--3/22/2012 02:25:00 AM

Yeah, this is #3 from the rape crew -- he helped carry the victim from one spot to another, stood and observed, etc. They got him full charges same as the first two under "accountability."

Hey, Rahm -- tell your hometowners up in Highland Park that it's not safe to come down to Chicago.

Look at the incident in Florida. Just like in FL., if you are not a gang banger or hoodlum, the "community" will protest and bring in the Justice Dept. to get your head if they find out who you are.

3/21/2012 09:52:00 PM

Bad example. The wannabe in Florida is a sicko who any cop in that town with a shred of sense probably steered clear of.

There are facts that you are not aware of and I don't want to post on an open blog.

So, STFU.

Glad you were not hurt officer.

Glad the Det. is ok, but stay the fuck out of shit off duty, unless it's completely unavoidable, i.e., a guy pulling a gun on you in your garage. Not worth it.

3/21/2012 07:59:00 PM

HE TOOK A STAND ! { and had no other option ]
The only people LEFT in this dangerous city who can take a stand and back it up are cops > including OFF duty - - Once cops can't take a stand on their block, the city is TOTALLY LOST and becomes DETROIT soon.

What is this guy supposed to do ? He lives there. Maybe he grew up there and his mother, wife, kids, brothers and sisters, nieces & nephews live on the block as well.
MAYBE a professional black guy, a cop, a fireman, wants to STAY and try to make a difference on HIS block, create an oasis.
EVERYONE on his block KNOWS him and regards him as cool. Even the thugs and miscreants, there IS an understanding.
BUT as especially the residents and police KNOW > MANY OF THE LOITERING THUG Trouble makers and corner dealers ARE NOT from that block or that neighborhood.
This cop was letting them know > don't UNLOAD your mess in MY neighborhood. If he doesn't take a stand - - WHO DOES ? > No one. And then, even though he is a cop, his own children will become prisoners at home and NOT be able to even ride a bike up and down their own street.
NO one is more qualified to take a stand for good in a a nieghborhood gone bad than a cop who lives there. He has the right to carry a gun, he has the backup of 10,000 other cops, he has the law behind him, and should have most his neighborhood behind him.
IF we have arrived a point in our country where an off duty cop can't take a stand against the lawless right on his block, steps away from his doorstep > then the WHOLE CITY IS LOST.
White cops out SW and NW who think your immune to this crap happening near you > just wait till the foreclosed homes nearby get taken over by the feds and given to secton 8 welfare 'families' on a block NEAR YOU.

Yeah, like the mayor cares about a contract.
The city has to go by rank order if and when they promote off the list. But if they toss out the list and change the ordinance they can pretty much promote any way they feel.
They did it when they tossed the Captain test. and it stood up legally,so they can do it again.
Clout rules.

So the female has died. according to news reports, the other offender who was shot in the hand was only charged with a misdemeanor.

hopefully he now gets charged with the woman's murder, as it was his actions that led to her death.

To 12:23 pm, You asked if I were dense to understand that most were not Monday morning quarterbacking rather simply offering a suggestion as to " not put yourself in that situation", wow. I argue that you sir are the dense one and more like than not the author of aforementioned comments. How does a victim who is coming from home not put himself in a situation where a P O S ganbanger decides to intimidate him by brandishing a handgun. Some people are not as fortunate as others or lack the desire There of to live in Norwood park. I am a perfect example of that. I have done nothing wrong. I have played my cards right. So when a P O S whom is blocking my street while I am trying to get home and as I approach he walks up to me with a gun I " announce office" and defend a threat on my life I am in the wrong? According to your " dense standards I am. I beg to differ. We Are the police for Christ's sake. Have some balls. Does not matter if Chicago backs you when the ilcs does.

So the woman who was killed had the gun? If not, why did he shoot her?
Or was this one of those "you weren't there" kinda things?

No gun was found, right?
The guy claimed he had a cell phone.

An off-duty tries to quell some disturbance and identifies himself while sitting in his car and merely rolls down the window.
Is that procedure for quelling disturbances?

So, after the detective identifies himself and is still sitting in his car, two of the alleged disturber's approach his car (knowing he is a detective) and decide to pull a gun on him.

That about it?

He starts shooting and hits a woman (now dead) in the head.

No gun, woman dead.

I realize it's very hard to be a cop in Chicago and the stress level is astronomical. I lived in the city for 40 years on the SW side...I know what its all about.

This woman is dead and she should not be.
Accident?
Was she attacking the cop?

Let the truth come out and the chips fall where they may.

To 5:18 am, she was shot because the dude She was with walked up to an off duty PO with a handgun. The PO lawfully fired his weapon. The shirtbirds action caused her death. Listen to all off the upstanding citizens talking to the cameras about that night. Several of them said there were 70-100 people in the park and on the street that witnessed it. That's where the fucking gun went. Imagine the confusion that took place immediately after and up until backup arrived. You obviously are not a cop or else you would know that it is common for other gangmembers to recover what ever evidence( dope or gun) That the offender discards during a foot chase or incident like this. It is their opinion that it IA us against them. Even if One doesn't know dude that discarded he evidence one would pick it up just to make our job harder.

I'll go ahead and add my two cents.

1) Due to liability, I wish (for the officer's sake) that he had not intervened. As someone else mentioned, if they had shot him, then that would be a huge tragedy. He was off-duty and outnumbered. This could have been much worse. Not defending anyone, just saying better judgment should have been used.

2) The person dead is a woman. She was an innocent bystander. Poor judgment to be out at 1am with a large crowd, but she still shouldn't be dead as a result. All of you all calling her an animal or ghetto should be ashamed of yourselves. Where is your compassion?

3) The cop justifiably shot at the perp. Sadly this woman was killed. You can still back the cop and feel sad for the woman. Again, where is your compassion?

4) This has nothing to do with Trayvon Martin, so let's not compare apples to oranges.
