$19 Million More to Burn

  • Chicago has a received a $19 million grant to cover the local security costs of the NATO summit this May, the city's summit planners said as they announced they have raised more than $36 million in private donations for other costs.

"The Host Committee is thrilled by the support we have received from the business community," said Lori Healey, executive director of the Chicago NATO Host Committee. “Thanks to their generosity, and the support of the federal government, the city will be able to host a tremendous summit that will highlight the best of Chicago."

The figures were released in a statement from the host committee Thursday afternoon, along with a list of donors that includes dozens of the most prominent players in Chicago's corporate community. Amounts of the donations were not provided.
How about some more safety equipment? Like fire extinguishers.

34 corporations donate $36 million dollars.

You could pay 700 people $50,000 for an entire year with that money.

How much of that money is basically from companies that Illinois gave tax breaks to -- and therefore the money is just a transfer from one clouted politicians connected pocket to the other?

Where's it all going?

If you could hire 700 people for a year how many people can you hire for one week, or one month?

Where's the $19 million dollar Federal grant going?

Right back to pay the US Secrete service and the FBI/CIA maybe?

Out of one Federal pocket and into the other and then act like the people of Chicago are somehow benefiting from all this.

So, is the total received $55 million? 19 from the G and 36 from private donations.

That's a lot of loot for a two day affair!

Just imagine what Ed Burke could have done with that money. He could have created a battalion of the Burke Royal Republican Guard like Saddam Hussein used to have.

I came across a female ASA named McMahon down at 26 and Cal. You don't think she is from the same McMahon family that makes out so well on school milk and Ed Burke droppings? I heard there were McMahons in the ASA's office.

It is good to be born to royalty.

More passengers should really help the congestion on the Kennedy. It'll take, oh, about 2 hours to get there, then get to the airport 2 hours early, then a couple hour flight, pay new taxes and fees, more for luggage. A lot of people are going to say 'f*ck it, I'd rather drive.'

The same day this is announced the City denied people their First Amendment right to protest at this event.

A GOOD reporter, even a somewhat decent reporter, would ask how is this $19 million and $36 million is going to spent on a two day event.

An arm of the government who calls himself/herself a reporter would just print the City's press release and wait for the next press release to arrive. . . .

I just looked up the costs of the TORONTO summit.
$1.1 BILLION dollars!! source Canadian Broadcasting
Granted, they purchased lots of equipment , but really, is Rham&company drinking special kool-aid?
Taxpayers are going to take a hit, the airlines are getting money taken away for this, and you can bet lots of other revenue sources are being tapped.
Also, who paying the Burbs??

The only thing that should burn in May is the city. Matter of fact we should swing open our skirmish line like a giant gate to the city and let the anarchists run wild. We dont, and will never, receive proper compensation for the job we do day in and day out. For once, lets stand together and let the politicians see how much THEY need US!!!!!

With $56 million, the city stands to make a lot of money from showing off the NATO summit to the world. Probably a few million. All the bad publicity the city is getting from YOU TUBE, not the chicken shit news media would cause me to keep away from chicago.

"...a list of donors that includes dozens of the most prominent players in Chicago's corporate community."

They didn't get to be there by throwing money around.

Like Emanuel said about the "Build A New Chicago" $7.3 billion spend-a-thon, "investors expect payback WITH INTEREST."

"Love...for sale..."

This mayor makes Daley look like a piker.

I have talked to supervisors in my district who are as concerned about "supervisor cowardice" among their peers as you are. The supervisors know the cowards amongst there ranks just as you know the "shaky" pos on your watch. The May is a month, not eternity, supervisor cowardice will be dealt with down the road

I'm being to think that the NATO "demonstrators" will be Andy Thayer and his 20 best friends celebrating his Sweet 16 party. Where's Loevy & Loevy when their little office manager needs some quick civil rights litigation?

You may think these guys are good bosses but they are not. In my opinion they are softballs for doing this. This city should be buying the equipment not them. This is why we won't get ahead.

What deranged, brain damaged, morally bankrupt, deaf, obviously ex-patriot would give a Chicago politician 19 million dollars? Hey shit-for-brains! The police in Chicago are still trying to recover 38 million dollars the MAYOR and his nephew stole from them WHILE he was the MAYOR! The nitwit money waster might as well have come here and just handfuls of cash into the pockets of Bette Davis Eyes and everyone on the city council. and Eddie Vyrdolyak. Cuz he didn't rat Burke out.
