Trial Continues

  • A member of a violent Chicago drug-trafficking crew told a federal jury Monday that he carried out kidnappings, robberies and home invasions with the help of a Chicago police officer who wore his police star and a protective vest during the crimes.

Fares Umar testified that he first paired up with Glenn Lewellen, a former cop who is on trial on federal racketeering and conspiracy charges, on a kidnapping on Sept. 11, 2001. In subsequent kidnappings, Umar said, he tried to look the part of cop by donning a blue windbreaker. But it was Lewellen who took the lead, he said.
Honest to god, we have no idea what the alleged attraction might be to assist dope dealers, home invaders or run your own robbery/burglary/jewel theft ring. You get caught way more often than not and then there's the Federal time you end up doing away from friends, family and everything you've known your entire life.

These accomplices are always going to rat you out - you're the ace-in-the-hole. We have yet to meet a prosecutor at any level who wouldn't make a deal with every sort of scumbag if they knew there was a dirty cop at the end of the line somewhere.

SCC,

You guessed right on this one and a few more. They are still coming, there are a few more federal cases in the pipeline for dirty cops that decided that HI's and false warrants were the way to make $$$.

Sty straight and keep your integrity about you!

I like sleeping at night, so I don't do anything I'm not supposed to be doing. I'll bet all of those who have done shit they could go to jail for are losing a lot of sleep.

Not worth it. They take Medzianowski (sp?) to and from the yard for his hour a day in a cage on wheels. Like an animal. Is it worth it?

And this is soooo different from what Cozzi did. He did what he did to control a prisoner/set him straight to avert future problems in the hospital to help the hospital staff, not because he liked to beat people, or did it for personal gain.

These fucks did it because they were greedy.

I suppose we could lay it off on the money aspect. We could also agree that some folks that come on this job think the "television and movie" version of being a cop is the way to go. You know the kind . . . danger around every corner, always got your hand on your weapon, hanging out undercover with the bad guys/dope boys/gangbangers, being the baddest guy around ala "Miami Vice", Crockett and Tubbs, always looking to stomp a hole in someone's ass just because you think you can, always believing that your smarter than the average copper . . .

In my opinion it comes down to having a moral compass, knowing the difference between right and wrong and being unwilling to cross the line - no matter how great the temptation; it's not being willing to bring disgrace and disrespect to the organization and the people with whom you work; it's being able to recognize that at the end of the day all that matters is your family, both blood and from the job, and those who will be there for you during difficult times; it's adhereing to the oath you took, being a responsible individual who has a personal moral code beyond which he or she will not venture.

All lot of that stuff is idealistic and not anything that could be called tanigble. But it is real, nonetheless, and it should be a part of the reason why you took this job. No one can really regulate your actions each and every day, but yourself. It is incumbent open every copper to try and hold the line against the criminality we swore to fight.

I don't think any of us that have been on this job any period of time can say we don't know someone who has gotten jammed up. We can't say that we have never met or worked near a copper who turned to criminal behavior or rolled like that before he even came on the job. But they are out there - all part of the fabric of this society of which our organization is a microcosim.

We can say, "Yeah, I knew that guy, but I had no idea that he was involved." I've been there myself and know the disappointment that comes with such a discovery. So, all you can say is, "He was a good guy but turned out to be a bad policeman."

We shouldn't try to figure it out - the reasons why. We should just accept that it happens and move on to complete an honorable career and enjoy a much needed retirement.

There is one common thread with crooked cops and all other criminals with some intelligence. They all believe, in their heart of hearts, that they are smarter than everyone else. And after they get away with it the first few times, that feeling gets stronger and stronger until they become arrogant and careless and get caught. They forget about paper trails, bank accounts, snitches and witnesses, video cameras, etc. The need to feed their ego and their pockets eventually does them in. It's a difficult concept for a normal thinking cop to digest. I believe "sociopath" is the proper term.

Lyle, the former 6th Ward alderman, will serve until next year’s elections determine a replacement for Judge Michael Stuttley, who retired earlier this year.

God help the P.O. who has their case go up in front of this hack. F-ing joke!!! The communities in the 6th Ward include Englewood, Park Manor, Greater Grand Crossing, Woodlawn, Chatham, Chesterfield, West Chesterfield, and Roseland Heights. It's twofold;

1) Minorities in the United States commit a disproportionate amount of crime. Argue what you will about the reasons behind that.

2) To get hired as a white male, you have to compete for your job. To get hired as a minority officer, your odds are better and you may not be judged by the same standard a white officer would be judged by. Excuses are allowed for past indiscretions.

I would add, it's not a race issue, it's a culture issue. People straight from Africa come to this country and succeed. Why are the people of African ancestry already here so far behind?

I think the majority of people comment when a black or hispanic police officer is dirty that they are gang affiliated. Really don't think its a race thing as to more of a "background investigation" thing. Cory Flagg was a GD, it was on his arm. That should of been an obvious one to avoid.

This subject was not raised as a race issue until the other poster mentioned it. He does have a point that most times the majority of respondents on SCC tend to jump off on the race thing when the subject is negative, whether it be about offenders, politicians or police. The common denominator is usually that he is Black or a "minority". That just comes with the territory considering the race of the majority on the job. Having said that, there are still lots of fair minded coppers on here, regardless of race, who don't get caught up in that race-baiting bs. It's counterproductive and irrational. We've got to work together and have done so over the decades, so this crap isn't helping. If you go to work, get your ass in a jam and call a 10-1, are you gonna give shit who rolls - black or white?

As far as the cultural thing . . . I don't disagree. Africans do come here and become successful, whereas many African Americans do not. Your observation may be born out by statistical facts and anecdotal evidence. Many aspects of American culture has done little to improve the plight of many Black in this country. Only those who worked exceedingly hard at whatever goal they sought actually realized some success.

However, that crack about different standards in the hiring of Black and White officers for this job is a throwaway statement. You need to have something more substantial than that, other than having some hard-on for Black folks. When I came on this job the standards were the same. The standards, if you want to go that way, are actually higher for Black folks on a whole lot of levels, not the least of which are intellectual grounds. Next time you decide to post that kind of off-the-wall shit, you might consider actually checking the statistics on the educational background of recruits by race - both pre and post the new hiring standards for Chicago Police officers. Generalities don't cut it.

Before you offer the argument that you don't need a degree to be an effective law enforcement officer, I'll stipulate that I totally agree. But on the other hand you need to define "standards" about coming on this job. Most Black guys I know either had a degree before they came on or got one while they were employed. Our White brothers (a lot of them) had to scramble to get them at Lewis of Chicago State in order to qualify for promotion.

I would suggest that folks don't get so high and mighty about this type of thing. Black and White - both - should stop raising that race issue on here unless it is actually germane to the discussion at hand. Get a life and figure out what the F you're going on this job if all you can do is carry that bs around on-duty and off.

With all due respect, are you kidding me?? I am an Hispanic male who scored in the top 10% of the 93'exam. Out of 7400 Well qualified, again, well qualified, I ended up getting hired in late 95' with my number on the list being in the high 3000's... an honor student with a bachelors from North Park college, judged the same way you were, came from a large family in humble park, my 3 other brothers and 4 sisters have never been arrested, never involved with gangs nor would my father have ever put up with that... have been asked many times to submit a package for merit, but response has always been that If I wanted to be a boss would have tested for it ... no 1 has ever given me anything I didn't deserve.. so please, quit playing the victim, don't assume that some if in fact not most of the minorities on this job, haven't earned the right to be here ... because I can give you a whole list of guys that are not minorities that got on the job or got their positions because of the people they knew/know and not because of their abilities ...

Corey Flagg was such a wierdo and his brother Carlton was such a nice guy in SOG. You just never know. I'd love to know how the fuck Corey became a GD with the privileged? fucking background and education he had. I think it stood for Gamma Delta or General Diploma.
