800 Tons of Contamination

  • There are allegations that the City of Chicago is cutting corners when it comes to safety at the site of the new 12th District Police Station. The dispute concerns the handling of asbestos, and whether the city's actions have put workers and nearby residents at risk.

When it's done, the city says the building itself will be "green" -- energy efficient and environmentally friendly.

In the meantime, though, DT Boring owner Tom Shelton, who is helping to build the station's geothermal heating system, claims the project has become an environmental nightmare. Shelton has 36 years of experience, and he said he has never seen a project mismanaged as badly as the Chicago Public Building Commission, or PBC, has handled this one.
And the final outcome?
  • "We've encountered hundreds of thousands of dollars in costs, we've had to lay off our employees, we're basically on the verge of being broke," Shelton said. "We are a fifth generation company, and this may be our last project."
More unemployed workers, thanks to City incompetence.

Well..if the city adds a clause in the nest contract negotiation under health care with regard to asbestos that will enable them to save money and the crisis will not go to waste.

Last week when we had some rain A1 rear entrance, there is a door to the basement/locker room. Rain was pouring in through the roof. A1, no question in my mind, is rife with contaminants.

How does 1 client put a 5th generation business in the poor house. Shouldn't a 5th gerneration business have more then 1 client that keeps their business afloat?

I am not defending the city because we all know how they mismanage funds, but going out of business because of 1 client doesn't make much sense for a fiscally responsible business of 5th generation status.

Sam Zitella pulled something like this at 6060 Northwest Highway; financed the property from Parkway Bank at $3 million, then drew up elaborate plans for sleek, expensive, ground-level stores with five or six stories of $600,000-plus condos above. Underground parking, of course -- except any survey done missed the crucial AT&T communications conduits down there...

Years later, we have a plain old single-story strip mall, bent into a sort of "Z" shape and with a few trees and planters stuck in to keep the Planning Board happy.

Gee -- a Subway sandwich shop! And, and, there's gonna be a nail art parlor opening any minute now. Just you watch and see!

>pfft<

Maybe they can even get a Kriket cell phone franchise for a month or two...

The PBC is a bunch of slimey, disgusting, ignorant, money wasting hook-ups. They don't know anything other than who is their Chinaman.
Talk about some people who should be laid off? And they will be the last ones to go.

Let this be a lesson to any and all successful and honest companies out there, DON'T do business with the city of shitcago. Nothing good can come of it. You will only go bankrupt.

Look at the poitive side of this story. If this site is so contaminated the city will save money on electric. This fucking place will glow in the dark.

800 tons of waste? Are they referring to city council? They're fat cats but 800 tons worth? It's possible.

Any word on how much money the city got for the old 012th District property?
I'm sure the new site, if purchased thru DV Capital Investments already collected their commissions, as the 'hired trrucks' haul off waste adding to the costs. But it's all good so long as Daley got his cut up-front.
Rahm isn't worried about money right now, his friends in the White House still have "such a deal" investments for him, like the Fannie Mae scam.

There's no such thing as "GREEN" except that the made up GREEN bullshit makes it's con-artist Democommies lots of "GREEN" in their pockets, after once again conning, and rapeing the Taxpayers. This is why all corrupt politicians are for it so much, but cannot even solidly prove it exists, other than their usual lies about it. Any Politician, etc; that is "FOR" this phoney Bullshit is NO FUCKIN GOOD, and is conning you, and others, right out of more of their Tax Dollars. Thats ALL it's about.

Area 2 is loaded with toxix Rat-Poison that was pumped in under the building, without warning those who work there, do to a tremendous Rat-Infestation problem. Wheres OSHA and EPA? Useless political dumping ground Federal Agencies, designed to fleece the Taxpayers without EVER really doing anything.

Does any one know of the number of officers who have either become very sick with related asbestos exposure or worse yet who have died? I think the numbers would surprise us.

Maybe if the cops working the new 12th district station grow an additional head on their shoulders from the toxic waste they can count the squad cars as "two man cars". Racoon Eyes would be pleased.

As if the original 012th isn't a big enough cancer cluster...

How many Coppers who have been assigned there have died of assorted cancers? Especially over the last 20 years?

Chicago's "Dirty War" against Policemen?

Knowledge that many stations & facilities were/are death traps but not doing shit to correct that?

Oh, OK...

"Just shut up and die already! You knew the dangers of the job when you signed on!"

If and when it becomes common knowledge about the hazardous work environment of Police facilities, all those who knew and played a hand in suppressing that info should be marched to a scaffold and promptly hanged...

Gloria Patri et Amen...

That bullshit goes a long way toward explaining the current mindset that Policemen are expendable in this town.

Can The Policeman get some vengeance around here?

Playing nice because we swore an oath isn't really doing all that much for us and the dirty cocksuckers running this town have their fingers crossed that The Police don't get fed up and set their own course of "correction."

"How dare you guys get angry," will be their cry...

The current 12 has had leaks of sewage in the locker room (a former range) for thr past 20 years not to mentin the lead from the old range. No one has seen fit to fix it. The only fix was to make a Sgt's locker room out of half of the Roll call room so that at least the sgt's would not have to deal with whatever it is that seeps on the floors down stairs!!!!

This should be our next contract demand. That all police stations be tested annually for contamination for air and water by an independant company and posted immediately.

It makes no sense to have a City building with out Health hazards. If they come already built in they don't have to wait to see what develops. Asbestos is way better than mold !!!!!!

The problem is, a small company thinks they've hit the jackpot by picking up a large City contract. So, they devote most of their people and financial resources to the project. Then, payments are delayed (which the City is notorious for), the little company pumps more of its own money into materials and payroll, then the City crashes the project. The little company can't carry the expenses very long, so they fold.

Through the roof and rare cancer types at that.
