As Engine Co. 117 and Tower Ladder 14 roared toward the still and box fire in the 4900 block of West Concord Place, the report over the radio said there were multiple calls about people trapped inside one of the burning bungalows.
Upon arrival, Engineer Paul Strubee barged into the front door of the 1 1/2-story bungalow at 4928 W. Concord, finding a woman in her 40s collapsed in a front room, suffering from smoke inhalation after apparently trying to make it to the front door. Pushing deeper into the thick, smoke-filled rear of the home, firefighter Jason Risley would find a victim worse off.
The firefighters and paramedics who responded to the fire that broke out about noon on the West Side Friday are credited with saving the lives of the woman and a 63-year-old, retired Chicago Police sergeant who lived there.

I worked for Sgt. B. Fowles when I was in 015. He was the most laid back,fair & kind man you could work for. Having been retired only 2 years, the Lord definitely decided that he needed to enjoy some more time on this earth especially with his family members. I will hold you & your family up in prayer Sgt. We may tease but we really do care about fire. Back in 1986 paramedics came to my house 4my four day old baby not breathing.No diggs at me for not knowing what to fdo in an emergency. The were awesome and were from house at 80th and Kedzie. Well that little girl they saved teaches school at Richards HighSchool working with the disadvantage .they should be proud,..I know inam.
I had the privledge of working for Sgt. Fowles when I was in 015. He was always a gentleman and a knowledgeable and caring sergeant. Speedy recovery to you sarge, enjoy your retirement. You've earned it!

Just so you know, Jason Risley is the son of former Deputy Surt. John Risley. Both men are class acts.
Despite the fact that CFD down played it as, 'all in days work' us brothers in the CPD know better.
It was true devotion to duty, bravery and self-sacrifice that allow them to enter a burning building for search and rescue operations.
We all appreciate that true heroism and Thank You individually and collectively for choosing to be part of... "Chicago's Bravest AND Finest, the CFD!"

Berk Fowles and I were in the same homeroom together in 1972 and made sergeant together. I think I'm the last one left from that class ... and I'll always remember Berk as a true gentleman, one of the best liked members of our class. G-d bless you Berk ... get well soon!
