- Chicago police today released a community alert warning of the attempted kidnapping of a jogger on a lakefront bike path.
The 30-year-old woman was jogging Friday on the path at about the 3500 block of South Lake Shore Drive when the attacker grabbed her from behind in an attempt to pull her to an unspecified location, police said in the alert issued Wednesday night.
After a brief struggle the woman broke free and escaped, while the attacker fled northbound on the bike path, police said.
The alert describes the attacker a black, 19-21 years old, 5-foot-11 to 6-foot tall, 200 to 210 pounds with a dark complexion, He was wearing blue jeans with blue boxer shorts, and no shirt.
Holy Crap! A description? By the Tribune Company? But race doesn't have anything to do with the crime, right? Asshats.

I recall a female PO in 021 catching a rapist in the act on the bike path near the same area about 10 or 12 years ago, I think she was a bike officer.
Used to be that the best riding for enthusiasts was south of McFetridge. Now, the whole lakefront bike path is like a dangerous obstacle course! Predators stand on the sidelines waiting to pounce.
A few well placed rounds from an armed cyclist might do this shithole city some good! At the very least, 10 million scoville pepper spray should be a cycling staple.

If the only description of a suspect was "he was black or he was Mexican" then it doesn't help much and thus they leave it out. If the description is much more detailed such as "he was a black male, about 5'10 to 6'00 tall, wearing braids, he had a tatoo on his wrist of a rose, he had a blue shirt and black baggy long style shorts" then it helps and the Tribune will state all of that in the article. Some of you need to be a little bit more fair and balanced.

The cars are probably in better shape than most of the beat cars.
Same goes for "company" cars used to bring cops to their cush administrative jobs. Get ALL of them out in the streets - cars and all.

Greetings from Montana,This happened to a friend of mine about 20 summers ago. He was riding his expensive mountain bike about 11 at night on the lakefront bike path when 5 urbane youths tried to take his bike. In his jacket pocket he had a Berrette .22 short mouse gun. He shot at the guys then cut out. To this day he never saw anthing in the papers and he doesn't know if he hit anyone.
I would like to share a story with you. Thirty years ago I was involved in a legal business that required me to travel to the West and South Sides of Chicago on a regular basis. My co-workers would routinely share their stories with me of so and so getting beaten and others getting robbed as well. After talking with a CPD client at the time, I made a decision that I would immediately arm myself while traveling these areas. I want to point out that the CPD merely hashed out the consequences of what would happen if caught while carrying, nothing more. Having no knowledge of firearms at the time, I went to a local suburban gun store and purchased a revolver, ammo, 2 holsters, IWB and OWB paddle. I must have applied for the FOID beforehand because I don't remember waiting more than the 3 days requirement. I then routinely carried hundreds of times and was never so much as looked at let alone stopped by CPD. I had one close call with a smash and grab to another motorist at the Eisenhower Congress ramp. I believe Illinois is simply lost in the dust when it comes to recognizing the needs of its residents to protect themselves. How can we take seriously an "alert" to people by the lakefront. What are we supposed to do with the alert? We are not able to adequately defend ourselves legally so whom are they trying to bs. Like I said before, the state is lost and you might just need to make some tough decisions before going out and about in Illinois.
No incidents on the lakefront in Rogers Park.

I hope the above poster doesn't think any reasonable-minded folks are actually swallowing his (and the Fibune's) bullshit. The mainstream media outlets in this city, for years, have never had a problem mentioning the offender's race in those few instances when the offender is WHITE (with or without further identifiers).
Regardless of how detailed the description may be (and we all know the description furnished to the media by police and/or witnesses is usually plenty detailed), the general public most definitely has a legitimate interest in KNOWING that description, even if it's nothing more than sex and race.
By this poster's reasoning, the public does not need to know that the lakefront mob beatdowns have been committed exclusively by male black teens.
At least if the public knows the crimes are being committed exclusively by male black teens, they can choose to avoid areas frequented by male black teens and perhaps reduce their chances of being the next victim.

Summer is already almost 1/2 over. The first half has been an abysmal failure on behalf of the highly-overpaid CPD upper echelon of Supervisors. Even if the rest of the summer is a success, which it won't be, this summer will go down as a big failure in leadership. Time for pay cuts and BIG changes to CPD management. Failure is no longer an option. Not for those highly inflated salaries.

All these details and accurate notifications of what took place and what to be on the look out for only serve to confuse us stupid Chicago citizens!
Why give an accurate account of the crime and rightly identify the offender since all that can do is help the offender to get caught and help future potential victims to be forewarned and alert!?
