Another Shooting?

  • Chicago police shot and killed an alleged robber Wednesday night in the city's South Shore neighborhood, authorities said. The shooting occurred just before 8 p.m. on the 7000 block of South Cregier Avenue, police said.

Preliminary reports stated a robbery-in-progress was reported and two sergeants responded to the scene and were flagged down by a witness who told them two suspects had just committed a robbery on the street, police said. The sergeants saw two suspects matching the description and approached ordering them to stop, police said.

One of the suspects turned and pointed a weapon at a sergeant who fired his weapon, striking the suspect, police said. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said. The second suspect was taken into custody by the other sergeant on the scene, police said.

Nicely done Sergeants.

011th District Commander spoke to the afternoon rollcall today about a meeting he attended which was led by the new Superintendent. The short and veiny was that there were concerns raised during the meeting that the pos detailed to 011 from TRU and MSF be accepted as "members of the 011th District family." Personally, I believe this is a non-issue, and I think most of the pos in 011 feel the same way. The Commander stated the same.

Them came the kicker. Apparently the new Superintendent wants to promote and assign pos to units based on a "meritocracy." The Supe stated, "A guy goes out and works hard. He is eventually assigned to a spot in narcotics or gang intelligence, where there are definitely more perks than patrol. Another guy works hard, but does not want to go to a unit and stays in patrol. What makes the guy in the unit better than the guy in patrol?" According to the Commander the Supe wants to change the department into more of a "meritocracy" where hard work is rewarded.

WTF??!! This guy does not have a clue what the City of Chicago is all about! Clout is the same as merit in this city! Clout counts, and hard work is irrelevant! If you throw more merit into the works of this department, the regular hardworking po doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell! Clout is one of the biggest demoralizing issues this department faces, and the new Supe wants to expand on that?!

Now let's listen to all the heavy guys with a phonecall defend how everything's legit.

We had the same exact trouble in Philly in the 70's before the age of internet or cell phones for them to coordinate.

The way we broke it up was to have a fast response team of 6 plainclothesman. Uniforms would surveil the mobs- who usually congregated at the bus stop nearest to the store they intended to loot- so you always knew to position a cruiser near the bus stops anyway since thats where most of the trouble was. If the uniforms wittnessed a mob form and move as a group, they would radio the mobs 20 to the response team and what direction they were heading... The UC's in plainclothes would make their way into the store either right after the mob had entered, or in some cases, they actually got there ahead of them.

When the turds gave the go signal to start grabbing stuff, there were 6 men right there amongst them with what in those days were old fashioned spring blackjacks and full sized straight handled batons concealed under a suit coat and ran down the trouser leg. This was before the breakdown asp batons they have now.

About 90% of the time they got dispatched to spots that didn't pan out, but the other 10% when they got 'em cold wound up putting an end to mob looting the stores.

Dear SCC,

I am a wife of a police officer. I read your blog because I support all that you do and respect the risks you take every day at work to protect our families and neighborhoods.

You should be concerned about SB 0512, a bill that is currently being heard in the Illinois House Personnel and Pension Committee. This bill is designed to change the structure for funding pensions by reducing the retirement benefits for current and retired teachers and other public servants in Illinois. The media and public have been misinformed about the financial status of the Teacher Retirement System (TRS) by interest groups who seek to reduce or eliminate state and municipal contributions to employee retirement benefits that public workers were promised when they started their employment.

You can find out more information about the financial health of TRS in their reply to a recent Chicago Tribune article that misinformed the public about TRS’s ability to pay current retirees:

http://trs.illinois.gov/subsections/press/TRSIssuesUpdate.htm#tribune

All of you who are public employees need to be concerned about this bill because, per your agreement upon employment, you were promised to receive pension benefits when you retire. Although SB 0512 calls for changes to the current benefit structure for teachers and some other public employees, there will be implications for all public employee pension plans if this bill becomes law. Even though Chicago employees have a pension system that is separate from that of the state, those interest groups that want to diminish the pension benefits for Chicago employees may look to the state’s action against state pension systems and may use any precedent set forth by the state to make the same or worse changes to benefit plans for city public workers.

If you care about preserving your pension benefits promised as a condition for taking on this dangerous job for mediocre pay, please call and write to your local state senator and representative today, telling them to vote NO on SB 0512 and on any other bill that seeks to reduce retiree benefits for any public worker in our state. 80% of state workers are ineligible for Social Security benefits. As Chicago Police Officers, you are part of that 80%, and your pension is your only reliable source of income when you retire.

If this bill passes, the public will not benefit because it will not translate into any direct tax relief. What it will do is give state lawmakers permission to continue to not fulfill their obligation to fully fund public pension systems. You have never missed a payment towards your pension plan. Neither have teachers. All public employees must stand together and stop this imminent assault on benefits earned through decades of hard work and public service. This bill can pass out of committee at any moment, so call your senator and representative immediately! You can contact your local state representative or senator through the We Are One Illinois website: http://www.weareoneillinois.org/

PS: Speaker Madigan and this bill’s sponsor are pushing to have this bill pass through committee tomorrow and have the General Assembly vote on this as early as Friday, so call your senator and representative now!

Illinois city among nation’s most dangerous

Douglas A. McIntyre, Michael B. Sauter and Charles B. Stockdale

Earlier this week, the FBI trumpeted the news that violent crime dropped 5.5% in 2010 while reported property crimes fell 2.8% during the depths of the worst economic slowdown since the Great Depression. The news, though, is far from positive.

> Follow Yahoo Finance and Yahoo Chicago on Twitter.

Though most regions of the U.S. saw declines, the Northeast saw an increase in murders (8.3%), forcible rapes (1.4%) and aggravated assaults (0.7%). Why that region was affected by crime more than others isn't clear. Perhaps it was because of the grinding poverty found in some of the area's cities and their high cost of living.

Of the top 10, four are in the midwest, including Rockford. Here's a quick glance at Rockford's stats:

9. Rockford, Ill.

Population: 156,180
Violent Crime Per 1,000: 14.52010
Murders: 20
Median Income: $36,990 (26% below national average)
Unemployment Rate: 13.3% (4.3% above national average)

Rockford has unusually high violent crime rates for a city of its size. Most notably, the city has the fourth highest rate of aggravated assault in the country, with 10.5 cases for every 1,000 citizens in 2010. During the same period, 20 murders occurred, almost double the number in 2000.

Quoted by the Rockford Register Star in 2007, Winnebago County Sheriff Dick Meyers said that he believed the city's "location worked against [it,]" as Rockford receives traffic from the drug markets in Madison, Chicago, and Milwaukee, resulting in heightened rates of violence.

Off topic. Scc, can you make a thread about a new way of suing the police.

Ive seen that more and more inmates in the county are filing federal lawsuits against officers before the criminal case is either done. There are no lawyers associated with the cases. All of the cases are fill in the blank and handwritten narratives written by the inmate who appears to be representing themselves. My question is, why all of a sudden in the past three weeks are all of these lawsuits popping up. I have seen about 5 or 6 a week being filed by inmates in county. Who in county is advising the inmates to file these? Who is helping them out file these? You can tell somebody is coaching them along with filing the lawsuits because of some of the legal terminology that is used. Im curious who is behind this?... Anyone in county or legal affairs have any info is these suits are legit and who is helping out... I would say in the past three weeks between 15-25 federal lawsuits against cpd and cook county D.O.C have been handwritten by county inmates... Im sure some slick civil lawyers are behind this and are trying to work some type of future angle on it.

What does the future hold? Are the politicians and "developers" planning on building a lucrative series of further Chicagos on the air rights of the existing municipality -- each new "Sanctuary City" stacked above the previous one, maybe all under a giant dome so that they can charge everyone an Air Tax?

5/26/2011 01:15:00 AM

..................................

He is yet to get his first phone call from an Alderman. He'll figure it out.

Expect changes that most of you won't like. When the New York style accountablity starts here, the exempts will be scared of their own shadows and start f'n with everyone.

I also suspect that he and the mayor will push for future lieutenants to be exempts. They want more power to control and demote.

Just wait and see.....

So so so glad to be out of MSF! You would not believe how many people were looking to jump ship. The rest are just afraid or think they're too good for a beat car. This disbanding is a breath of fresh air. Just too bad the bids didn't come first!

The amount of self promoting, back stabbing rats here is nauseating! That weasel Lt PK only cares about his own self interest and straight up lies to a whole roll call. Just glad this nightmare is over.

The reason to stay was ten hour shifts. More time off means a happier police officer. Too bad the last superintendent didn't see this. It is one thing that would change attitude and morale. Ask the two districts that had it and lost it. You also knew what watch you were on, who you were working with, and who you were working for. Makes life much easier.

From yesterday's ST:

"Tolva is counting on his chief data officer, Brett Goldstein, to expand upon Goldstein’s work developing a Chicago Police Department program that aims to predict when and where crime will happen. “We want to apply analytics to sets of data to identify patterns,” Tolva said. That could mean comparing a neighborhood’s 911 and 311 calls, or analyzing overlapping data from the Department of Transportation and Streets and Sanitation Department to figure out how to better deliver city services."

This is hilarious!

"They (are) lying. My son would never carry a gun," said his distraught motheer, Lois Pickett. "He ain't never done that, they can't say that."
"The police officers killed him!" she cried in a telephone interview with the Tribune. Tatioun was the oldest of five siblings.
"Yes, he has (previous arrests), but that's not a reason to kill him," Pickett said between tearful sobs. "That's no reason to kill a child."

5/26/2011 02:17:00 PM

The article should have read:
"Play stupid games, you win stupid prizes!"
Or “No reason for a child to rob innocent people.”
Or “How I failed as a parent”

Alas, the liberal asswipes that serve no purpose in life but to slant the truth in a manner glorifying the “Thug Life” can’t write anything better.

Seriously, how do you define a 'hard worker' on this job? If the measure is the number of arrests, then you encourage people to make arrests that could have been handled otherwise. Meritorious means numbers. Numbers don't always reflect the competency of an officer.

I don't have any answers. I just know numbers should not be a measure of performance.

As has been shown, MSF/TRU had low quality arrests with numerous officers on the paper. Is that a valid measure of performance? I don't think so.

Just askin'. Ghetto entitlement mentality. Now pay me 2M because you shot my baby who I don't even know who the daddy is, because I was too busy doing crack myself, to raise him properly. 2 more yrs, I'm getting out of this shithole.

While we are not currently a part of this bill, this does not mean our status could not change. The House Pension Committee Chairman, Representative Kevin McCarthy has indicated that our status could be addressed in the future.

It is essential that every member, their family members, and friends contact their State legislators to hear our message Loud and Clear. Please call 888-412-6570 or use this link to contact a State Representative or Senator.

Please tell them to vote no on SB 512 or any other legislation that has a negative impact on public pensions in Illinois.

The thing that gets me about this Headline is 2 Sgts. I realize that Sgts are the Police, but 2 Sgts on an In Progress call w/a/weapon involved.....Was a Bt. Car assigned, or were they all tied up and the zone had to send 2 Sgts to this call because they were the only cars available? It only goes to show how short handed we are. Nice job to both Sgts.

5/26/2011 09:26:00 AM

Bt cars are always assigned. Plus it doesn't matter, both of these sergeants go on jobs and will be right there with their officers.... short-handed or not. That's just their character.

Dealing with 3 different Lt's that run their companies 3 different ways is aggitating as all hell. Then again you wouldn't know since you probably couldn't get into a unit with absolutely no standards

As far as the quality of arrests in MSF/TRU you try to come in with a great felony every night when they put you in an area 5 blocks by 5 blocks that is saturated with marked cars from their unit, beat cars, tac cars, coverts etc..

Conclusion -- The regular garbage pickup will be needed the next morning!
