Shots Fired in Copland

  • Two men were arrested this afternoon after off-duty officers spotted the suspects breaking into cars in a hospital parking lot on the Northwest Side, police said.

The incident happened at about 2 p.m. in the 7500 block of West Talcott Avenue in the parking lot of Resurrection Medical Center, according to a police statement. Resurrection College Prep High School is on the same block.

Citizens and off-duty police officers were exiting the hospital when they spotted two men in the parking lot apparently breaking into vehicles.

The officers identified themselves as police and ordered the men to stop, but they instead got into a vehicle and started fleeing the scene, police said. In the process, police said, the man tried to run down pedestrians, including one of the officers.

Fearing for his safety, the officer shot at the vehicle, police said. No one was hit in the incident.

Good thing we're going to strip officers out of these "quiet" neighborhoods, because nothing ever happens up there.

To our north side brothers and sisters - better stock up on the ammunition and keep an eye on each other. You're all going to be pulling a double shift - eight hours at work and another shift watching the yards, alleys and parking lots.

QUESTION?

Who is the female officer assigned to 016 that stated she DOES NOT do inventories?

When the watch commander attempted to force her to inventory a purse she called "her clout"..
Deputy Chief Ricco...
he then told the Watch Commander to get someone else to do the job????

What the hell????

Not a police officer but have a police related question.

My neighbor and friend is an officer with the Chicago Police. His wife is having a birthday shindig for him in a couple weeks.

I noticed the flashlight he carries is a very small, rinky-dink thing that fits in a shirt pocket.

I wanted to pick him up one of the old Maglite 6D's (the biggest one they make). I remember coppers using them years ago, before they came out with those modern little hollow clubs that retract back into the handle. My uncle was CPD in the 60's-80's and said he wouldn't trade his big maglite for anything.

Does anyone know if it's OK for him to use the big maglite at work? I'm buying it for him either way, but hoping he can put it to use outside the household.

Thanks

I am in 16th and it really sucks that we lose our police officers to the ghettos!!

Don't they already have extra police because of all the "special units" that are in the ghettos?

I will end this by saying...Awesome job by the officers that ran that shithead over!!! LMAO all day!

The entire city of Chicago will change in the next ten years. And that change won't be good. All of the so called nice and safe neighborhoods that will slowly turn into shit. 016/Copland is slowly turning into shit and guess what? There is nothing we can do about it because the criminal element does not fear the police anymore. In the old days, the shitheads, shitbags, gangbangers, etc... wouldn't even think about going into Copland and mess around. But now, they don't care, they have no fear for the off duty or on duty cops who live in Copland. It'll be a very interesting few years in Chicago.

Dear RCW:
regarding flashlights, prescribed type is the shitty streamlight that lasts about 15 minutes and then u have to charge it for 10 hrs. Everyday i see all kinds of flashlights people carry, from tiny to big, different brands. Maglite is a no-no due to being metal, god knows you might be tempted to defend life life with it and hit somebody. For household use maglite is awesome, get him the rechargable led one or look into 5.11 ones. I have one and im very happy with it. recharge time is like a minute. apparently new polymer battery, will see how long will last. Avoid flashlights that take 123 batteries, they are small and work nice but batteries are expensive.

016 is quickly changing into garbage. The only choice is for the decent people to move the fuck out. I am not a city employee and I am not forced to live here. I am moving out of state in four years when both myself and my wife retire. We will move down to Florida. Also, since we bought our house in 1975, we can afford to sell it away for a very low price and then quickly leave. I feel sorry for city workers and other people who have to live in Chicago and deal with the changes going on in Chicago.

Note to the poster about the 016th District "purse inventory' incident:

If what you're posting here is true, the problem isn't the female officer, or even the watch commander.
The problem is with Riccio, who even took the call
from the officer, then turned around and spoke to
the WC, interceding on her behalf. As a retired
former commander I can tell you there is no way
I would have even taken a call from a Patrolman
about such an trivial incident, let alone interfere
with a watch commander's request that an officer
perform a job related task. If, and I say if, Riccio
did what is alleged here, shame on HIM.
When does the BS end? Everybody has to know
their place in the organization for it to work.
Far too much of this 'reach around' BS went on
during the last CPD regime, and it's going to
have to stop if the Dept. is ever going to get
back on track. It's even worse when exempts
don't respect the chain of command that exists
around them.

016th. District Needs The Police.
Two Issues Are At Work Here.
1. The 016th. district has a large inventory of police officers, that are not up to the task. I will not go into the details.
2. The 016th. district has a large inventory of recent residents that do not want, nor know how to function in a civilized society. Many have been placed there through government assistance.
On a related topic, for years the worst thing 016th. police officers had to deal with, was the politics of the job, auto accidents, drunken drivers, and spoiled brat children of fellow police, and city workers.

Not allowed for use anymore -- it was too good a defensive weapon. Everybody used to walk into domestics, etc., of course both of 'em are holding their flashlights. Talk to the people, very low-key, looking around at the pictures on the wall, say that's a nice table there, shine the light up on the ceiling, it's a little distraction from the situation -- and of course kerpow if suddenly needed. Invaluable.

To tell the truth -- and I am a big guy -- the C-cell lights always fit my hand better. I can get my fingers all the way around those and I think deliver more force/have better retention. I used the 3D small-head Kel-Lite for years but it really was a lit-tle too big to really grip properly.

Today you need a kerosene lantern to peer into corners, a whistle, and a key for the call box...

"...but took till 2010 for them to find Northwest Hwy area. Moretti's is gonna start seeing a more diverse crowd. DOH and good luck with that."

CPS leased some disused industrial building around the 6000 N. block there back around 1999 as a school for the violent, don't-fit-in, etc. All of a sudden I'm hearing this loud, lecturesome female voice from the street below, it's a God-damned teacher leading thirty of 'em on a freaking walking tour not where she lives, but RIGHT WHERE I LIVE. Like they really need to know where an Edward Jones brokerage office is -- you know, manage their accounts and so forth, right?

Hey, thanks so much -- as I told her.

They'd have them out on the cement sidewalk with dirt rakes -- not leaf rakes -- scraping at the cement, marking it up, as though there was anything there to clean up. "Neighborhood participation." One time a blizzard hit and they blew out the school doors at go-home time, went wild up and down NW Hwy, crawling over the employees' parked cars outside the old Safco Corp., pulling at door handles, looking inside. "GET AWAY FROM THAT CAR!"

Don't know if that "school" is still there.

I don't empty the garbage unarmed, or go to my car or anything. I never ever leave home without it.

I had to use it two blocks from my home. Never leave your home without a weapon.

---well that is a very nice thought, however these new LED lights are much smaller and are 10-20x brighter than the old maglites. You can now get 250 lumen led lights for around $50-60!

nice misdirection.

Yeah, but unfortunately five other goofs actually answered the question. Guys, if you really believed that was somebody wanting to buy a birthday gift, you're soft.

It was somebody cleverly asking if we're allowed to carry maglites or not. And you spoon-fed it to him.

"Try the smaller flashlight that they sell at Shore galleries in Linciolnwood. They can help you out."

--4/19/2011 09:18:00 AM

Helped me out so much -- not just once, either -- that I'll never set foot in the place again.

When you make a permanent enemy in business, well, you've got a permanent enemy who will never shut up for the rest of his life.

Couldn't even be troubled to find some wrapping paper or a long cardboard gun box so I could inconspicuously get a purchase out to my vehicle. Petty-ass fools.

Used stuff sold as new (not even cleaned properly, like a barrel full of heavy green copper fouling is normal) defective weapons with cracked frames and other serious mechanical defects put out for purchase, etc.

Hope the few bucks was worth it.

The purse incident in 016 is real. It happened on the 2nd watch. It also happened over a year ago and the female P.O. no longer works in 016. Neither does the w/c involved.
Shit, neither do I.
Some news travels awfully slow.

RCW- buy the damn thing. I also carry a Maglight but it's the newer LED. It does however look like the old style one that carried about,IIRC, five or six D batteries. No one is going to say anything about it. I keep mine in the trunk of the car. At the beginning of my tour I take it out and at the end I put it back. No big deal. Now if he clobbers some knuckle head over the head with it, that's another story.

Hahaha, I can appreciate your hyper-suspicion- if I were in your line of work, I'd definitely be that way too- but my question was absolutely sincere. It's not like asking about a flashlight is a big deal. I could understand if I were asking what time patrol cars were going to be passing by (Spot XYZ), but sheesh... It's just a flashlight.

Stop talking to this goof about the Mag lite hes setting you up.

Th things that were left out is that the two M/1's involved were residents of the west side and south side respectively - and that of course the van was stolen. The gentlemen that observed this were visiting a sick relative and luckily happened to see these two animals cruising the lot getting in cars. And the ambulance? A myth.

That makes you part of the problem too. If you can't see what a collection of criminals this democratic machine is made up of, I feel sorry for you.

Or perhaps you're one of the ones who benefitted from the corruption. In that case, you did well for yourself at the expense of the rest of the city and state.

Take the tin foil off your head. Do you think it's that hard to find out what cops carry? Who gives a shit if we carry mag lights or surefires?

Get a fucking life.

I'll give you credit for doing what you do well. You're clever. But don't disrespect me by trying to convince me you're 'just a buddy looking to buy a flashlight'.

Thanks, I figured that.

Still waiting for names, ages, charges -- sounds like multiple counts of attempted murder would be appropriate to start with...

All in all, though, the last time I ran stats on that NW side area within a one-mile radius, there were maybe 26 crimes reported that week -- domestic, telephone harassment, theft, etc.

Now center it at Central and Madison. Holy s__t. Over 250 crimes that week -- and heavy ones, all homicides, armed robberies, ag bats, rapes, burglaries, auto thefts. Those were just the ones that got reported.

Just a reality check, lookin' at the pretty dots on the different maps -- count your blessings.
