Problems for Shields

  • Michael Shields is rumored to be one of the top candidates for the job of Chicago Police Superintendent. But some Chicago neighbors want to do a better job of policing his own rental property.

Shields has a high-profile resume. He is a former deputy superintendent, current head of security at Chicago Public Schools, and a cousin of First Lady Michelle Obama.

But residents of the one South Side block said they have a question for Shields: "Where's the landlord?"

Wonder of wonders, in Shortshanks' haste to crack down on problem buildings and landlords, this one isn't really on the radar. Probably not enough to derail the "Shields for Superintendent" train, but it's definitely a sign that "business as usual" is alive and well in Chicago.

Yeah...so what time is the coronation ball for the new royal family?

Hey look at me everybody, look at me -- I have a new job.

Come on over to my pawty and drop a few grand to help me celebrate -- I'll let you shake my hand!! YOU'RE BUYING!

Talk about prostitution!

--clip--

...

Those who chip in $50,000 — the maximum contribution that the committee said it would accept — will be named co-chairmen and get four tickets to the inauguration events.

Packages priced at $5,000, $10,000 and $25,000 are also available, according to a fund-raising flier.

Well, we all knew it was only a matter of time before some of the candidates began to sling mud on each other. Aunt Bea has her own 'guns & drugs' issue at
her SW side condo where her daughter resided with a scumbag boyfriend, and now it's come to light that
Shields is a section 8 landlord. My, how unpleasant.
I'm sure quite a few cops have bought properties at auctions, and have them currently rented out to section 8 families. We all know these families have a tendency to slip a parolee or two into these homes that they rent; we all also know that these folks out a prison have to live SOMEWHERE. Not to excuse Shields if he knew about the problems, but I didn't see anything that showed anyone actually selling drugs out of the home. This stuff will only get uglier until May, when Rahm will have to make his fateful decision. May 16th can't get here soon enough. Let the smearing begin!

That is the least of his concerns. With the sexual harassment beefs, the one beef that got an officer promoted to Commander after his marriage was totally destroyed because of the affair and his domestic history, this is nothing!

I will say one thing about him though, he told Weis to his face he promoted the most incomptent person around to her job! He would be my guy for that reason alone!

Off Topic:

Please remember that Teachers unions are NOT our friends. They are NOT our "brothers and sisters". They are the ENEMY of working police officers and their families.

Case in point:

April 13, 2011

A California teachers union is under fire after passing a new resolution supporting a convicted cop killer.

The California Federation of Teachers (CFT) last month passed a resolution reaffirming their support for Mumia Abu-Jamal, who was sentenced to death in the 1982 murder of Philadelphia Police Officer Daniel Faulkner during a routine traffic stop.

In the resolution, the CFT alleges Abu-Jamal’s trial was unfair and calls the former radio journalist a civil rights hero.

I was trolling around the newsroom and found the following on the floor, which apparently had been cut and edited out of the article:

"Shields is a former deputy superintendent who was demoted to lieutenant by former superintendent Weis who was hired to straighten out the department. Shields' demotion was one of the few good things Weis did. However, instead of remaining on the department as a lieutenant, Shields was allowed to take an unusually long, three-year leave of absence. Most unclouted officers who take a leave of absence are told after one year to resign or return to the job. Not so for Shields. Instead of resigning, Shields knew Weis's term would expire in three years when he could come back to the department with the backing of his first cousin's husband (i.e., President Transparency Obama) and hopefully regain his position of power where he was able to engage in sexually inappropriate behavior with underlings."

Here is a question for you know-it-alls. Who would be acceptable as Superintendent. I ask because everyone that is mentioned is immediately flamed by the masses here on the blog.

I was a sergeant with Mike Shields in 015 back in 97-98, and can honestly say that he was a good, fair guy who treated everyone well. So I don't understand all the venom here. What more could you want in a Superintendent other than someone who treats the officers well?

And here is another thing you need to know about Mike. He don't give a shit what color or ethincity you are. What he cares about is whether or not you do your job. He has no use for dogs.

So based on these FACTS, I think he would be a vast improvement over what we have had for leadership these past few years. In fact, I would put him ahead of Cline, as Phil had no use for you if you didn't come from Narcotics or the Detective Division.

- Who would be acceptable as Superintendent. -

This is a fair question, and I'd also be interested in thoughts from the crowd who might have a view and experience outside the CPD.

From Chicago, I'd say McNulty (is he even still alive?), and that is about it. Even he'd need a babysitter the same way Rodrigues should have had a babysitter.

But outside Chicago, there are very easy people to go out and find. Bratton from Boston/NYC/LA, Evans from Boston and now the British policing standards body. Either one, come hell or high water, would be the best thing possible for Chicago.

You want a woman? Maybe try Lanier out of DC, but her track record might be more "luck" inasmuch as she has been chief in DC only in a period where DC was completely gentrifying and the ghetto was moving out.

Fact is, there are VERY few exempts in Chicago who ever belonged in any position such as those they held. The same is probably true of most organizations, what with that rule about people getting promoted to their positions of maximum incompetency.

If someone's background isn't squeaky clean I'd be okay with it, just as long as they have a solid record of leadership and results. Results ain't something most anybody in Chicago's exempt ranks can show.

Obviously you were not on the West side back in the 90's. I was in 015 for 3 of them and in 010 for the other 3 and as soon as the championship games ended, the bars emptied out, gunshots were fired and the looting started. It had nothing to do with your "jets".

Its not about euphoria and glee. It's about looting and mayhem.

There have been many people who have been on a leave of absence for far more then three years, some an entire career. They were allowed to pay into the pension fund the entire time and then retire for pension. A few were even allowed to take promotion exams when they were on a leave. Some of these epople went to the cook county sheriffs department, one was even an alderman. I would guess that Shields has been paying into our pension fund while he has been working at CPS.

I will say one thing about him though, he told Weis to his face he promoted the most incomptent person around to her job! He would be my guy for that reason alone!

do people really think that if the bulls win the championship this year that there will be riots??? No, they will not riot. It will be the ususal gunshots and dancing on the corner but the only reason we had the riots back in the day is because all the projects were up. They spilled out of the horners and abla and surrounded Chicago stadium and the rest of the jets in the city all went nuts... With no jets up there will not be widespread problems like what we saw in the 90s... At least the city better hope not because they have about 4 gas teams and that wont do a damn thing....

4/16/2011 02:43:00 PM

No "jets" in 015 or 025 and it was an absolute war zone on Zone 12! 011 and 010 were even worse. Were you even on the job back then cause you sure seem ignorant to what went on!

Shields should of been dumped over his sexual harrassment cases but because of his connections with Obama both Hillard and Cline overlooked them and only slapped his wrist.
At least Weis took action and demoted him.

WEIS didn't take 'action' against Shields. It was 3M, pure and simple. 3M felt threatened by anyone who wasn't a yes man to him, or had his nose pressed firmly against 3M's buttcheeks. A number of very competent exempts were either demoted or pushed out under the WEISel/Masters regime. Won't comment about Shields's sex harassment CR, because I don't know enough about what actually occurred, but as an exempt and a leader, he was
probably one of the brightest and most fair guys
I ever worked for. I hope this crap about having section 8 tenants doesn't hurt his chances to become the next Supt. He's got the experience, and he's still young enough to have the energy that will be needed to turn this dept. around, seeing as how
the last regime here set the whole damn dept. back about 8 years.

===================================If I had a pick it would be Nick Roti. But he doesn't have the juice & is a white male. So I would be surprised if he made it to the final 3. But whoever it is would be smart to put Nick at one of the top spots. Let Nick run the streets.

Yeah NO JUICE, he was made Chief of OCD because of his work ethic, gimme a freakin break.

Did someone say "riots?"

Any revolver police remember the real riots? I mean the REAL riots, the ones in 1968, not little shit from the 90's. Real riots with police on 12 hour shifts carrying their M1 carbines from home, the ones with thousands of National Guard troops carrying live ammo in Chicago. The ones with the west side in flames. Like LA circa Rodney King only much larger and longer.

Those were riots.

I went through all of the " celebrations" for all of the Bulls victories before I retired. I worked in 010 and 007 and it was hell all night long each and every time. There are few projects in either district but that did not stop the idiots from their celebrations. As I recall Rush street had a lot of problems as well as west archer ave. in 008 and no projects at those locations. The gas teams saved us many times. It was a miracle that many officers were not shot with all of the lead flying around. If the Bulls win it again, I wish all of you a safe and peaceful night. They do not pay the police enough money for riot duty and I can say that with experience from the west side riots to Humboldt park to the Bulls. If you have never attended one of these affairs you are in for a real surprise.

===========Thank God you don’t have to pick. Sober up and stop drinking his Kool-Aid. Roti is all about Roti. He is one of the biggest self promoting kiss asses on the Department that I have seen in 25 years. He was so far up Weis’s and Master’s asses when they showed up to CPD, it was sickening.
Roti’s main objective, as always, is to secure his spot or advance himself. He could care less about the troops. Put down the Kool-Aid and ask around.
The only reason that Roti is backing Al W. is because Al’s wife, a sergeant, works in his office and if Al W. gets it, Roti will keep his position or possibly move up if Al W. buys into Roti’s ass kissing and bullsh###. Al W. is a class act and hopefully doesn’t buy into Roti’s bullsh@@.
Believe me, Nick wants it, he knows he doesn’t have a chance, so he is backing the one minority in the running who he thinks will take care of him.

It doesn't matter. Sadly, CPD is now a political organization used to funnel money to the Democrat Party first. Effective and truely unbiased Law Enforcement are now unimportant, compared to that. All is bought and paid for, Esprite de Corps now gone, or only of a second nature.

I don't know if Shields-Obama was a good cop or not, or if he is a good security chief or not for CPS, but I do know if he gets the nod for Super it's because of his cousin and cousin-in-law. There are definitely more/better qualified people Rahm just paying back his old boss and the boss-lady for their "help" and contributions to his campaign. Goddamn I hate Chicago politics....

who really cares, we have no control over gets the sups job, do you guys really think the Rahm Emanual gives two shits if we like the new boss, he is getting ready to launch a program to take days from us, don't say he can;t because we have a contract, look what happen to others out there, he needs to go after the medical roll abusers and clean out the call back unit with people they need to fire for reasons and re instate others that need to get back to work.

4/16/2011 10:30:00 PM

Yes. Yes, I do think Rahm cares if we're happy. He's a very, very shrewd poliitician and he does NOT want the police force JPWeis caused us to be.

He knows happy workers are far less troublesome workers. It isn't a question of him needing to be liked, because he doesn't give a damn if someone 'likes' him, or not. He just wants to be President and he's practicing on Chicago. He needs to be successful here.

A few were even allowed to take promotion exams when they were on a leave.

-----I am a lowly detective (scored under 450 in 98)and was able to take a leave of absence for 3 years and take the sergeant's exam as well. Thanks to that leave, I was able to score under 180. Just sayin...

The mistake is applying your rational thought process and common sense to the probability of irrational acts performed by others that are not students of a similar line of thought. The processes are as different as electricity and lightning. Think about it.

Shields was great boss to work for long before Michelle Obama became the First Lady. You're either a fair & decent leader or you're not; she had nothing to do with any of Shields's Command positions.
If anything, it made Jody look even more stupid to dump Shields AFTER Obama won the election.
Always wondered about that. It might have paid
off if Jody had kept him around; now we've got Jody
sticking around Chicago after his contract expired, like a stray dog standing around the back door
of a White Castle restaurant, waiting for scraps.
Most would say it's downright pathetic.

We certainly know this to be true here at the UCPD
concerning our illustrious leader Doty. We heard nothing but horror stories about him after our chief brought him here as his second in command, and discovered all of it to be right on the money.
We've never had such a fool placed so high up in
our dept., and all of us hope this nightmare ends
as soon as humanly possible. Perhaps one of the
names on the CPD short list for Supt. will have
need of Doty when Rahm installs them as top cop
next month? All of us here at the UCPD certainly hope so (with the exception of his hand puppet
Milt Owens--we hope that your new Supt. will
allow them both to return to the CPD as a package
deal, and it's clear Milt would agree to such a deal).
We would even be willing to accept a lawn chair as
an even exchange, and call it a day. It would be
great for the UPCD to come out ahead in such
a deal for a change.
