The Latest Name

The most recent flavor of the day:
  • According to the Chicago News Cooperative, the biggest name is Gil Kerlikowske -- currently President Barack Obama's drug czar. Kerlikowske met with Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel last week in Chicago and was back in town over the weekend for an interview with the Chicago Police Board, the CNC reported.

Kerlikowske's official title is director of White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. Before his current post he was the Seattle police chief for 9 years and also had been Buffalo New York's police commissioner.

The CNC also lists the following applicants:

  • Garry McCarthy -- Newark New Jersey's director of police, also a former NYC deputy commissioner
  • Gene Williams -- Chief of Patrol, CPD
  • Al Wysinger -- Deputy Chief of Detectives, CPD
  • Deb Kirby -- Asst. Deputy Superintendent, CPD
  • Michael Shields -- Head of security for CPS
  • Dan Isom -- The Chicago Tribune reports that St. Louis' police chief has also thrown his name in the hat.
Was McCarthy the one who called Chicago's last supernintendo search a joke and rigged against outsiders? Or are we misremembering our NYPD applicants?

Mean Gene, Al Wysinger, Michael Shields, and Tina Skahill all suffer from the Area Two curse. They were all assigned there at one point, all but Wysinger were area chiefs Wysinger was the gun Lt. For about two weeks. Area two has been a dead end since before Noreen Walker.

SCC, you are right on one count, wrong on another.

McCarthy is the one who called the process a joke, however it was not last time. He, along with Joe DeLopez was a finalist in the 3 man Octagon match that produced Cline as champion.

Garry McCarthy said: "You will find me in squad cars, with Officers". Thats probably more than we could say for the other "applicants". I realize McCarthy has a rather checkered past. I still feel he is a strong candidate for the job.

I have heard from several people that Gene Williams will be a finalist. The Revs are backing Williams. Don't be surprised to see him as #2 in the CPD.

I still like Skahill but I hear maybe next time for her. She will not be the next Supt. She will get a bump and get groomed for the top spot.

Do not be surprised to see a Fed in charge again.

Bratton made the comment when he was in Chicago for a conference. I was there and I heard it. He said that the word is out there that the Chicago selection process is fixed and he would not waste his time. He also said that the politics are too intense in this town. He then took the LA job

Why would McCarthy, once again, put himself through the "Chicago sham" selection process? He seems to be a bit smarter than to twice fall for the same con job. Go figure.

Kerlikowske's career highlights as Seattle Police Chief, get ready:

Mardi Gras street riots that broke out in Seattle in 2001. Kerlikowske was chief then and ordered his police force to stand back and let the riot happen.

In March of 2001, the Seattle Police Officers’ Guild overwhelmingly (88%) voted no confidence in Kerlikowske

In December of 2004, Kerlikowske went shopping with his wife. He left his personal gun in his unlocked, unmarked police car, and the 9mm Glock pistol was stolen.

Kerlikowske has advocated bans on semi-automatic rifles and for requiring background checks on private sales at gun shows. In addition, he believes that gun dealers should be left open to lawsuits.

Kerlikowske allowed an officer, who has since been promoted, to establish the Get Off The Street program, or GOTS. This program aimed to help criminals by dispensing health information in an arrest-free zone. A recent analysis by the mayor’s staff showed the program made little difference in the lives of those it targets.

The former NYPD guy who called the selection process a joke was John Timoney.

John was a powerful figure when he was NYPD...some guys hated him (he didn't take any shit from his Officers), but most guys who worked for him loved him because he was straight shooter who backed his guys who were doing their jobs.

When he was a precint Commander he used to go out on the beat and make arrests...tough old Irish Turkeybird (I think he's originally from Dublin).

He moved on to the Philly PD (he was the guy who they say invented the whole bike patrol and crowd control technique), and then Miami PD, where he got into some sort of beef, (can't recall right now what it was about).

He seems like he would be the perfect candidate, tough Irish fucker, real policeman, strong independent character, respected by the rank and file.

Of course, with qualifications like those...he is immediately disqualified from any consideration for the Supt spot.

Oh well.

If I were mayor-elect Emanuel, I'd take a hard look at "outsiders", particularly Newark P.D. Dir. Garry McCarthy. According to the 2010 U.S. census, 70.7% of the Newark population is black or Hispanic. Under Mayor Corey Booker and according to some NYPD (McCarthy is ex-NYPD), he's been doing quite well in Jersey's largest city of 277,000.

In 2003 under Daley, the three finalists were Phil Cline, Joe DeLopez and "outsider" Garry McCarthy.
Daley played McCarthy like a fiddle as a shill for his "nationwide search".

No one can ever accuse me of being a "clout baby". If an "insider" is appointed, I perceive it as "business as usual" for clouted morons and political hacks.

I concede that in December, 2007, I hoped that "outsider" Jody "J-Fled" Weis could minimize the CLOUT factor in the CPD. I was wrong--terribly wrong. He will never live down his legacy of a clueless, lying COWARD and Daley's puppet.

Notwithstanding, I favor an "outsider" who not only "talks the talk" but also "walked the walk" as a street copper.

Fire away, "clout babies".

Hey kid are you on drugs? Wasn't Jfled an OUTSIDER? He still made the promotions that he was told to make by the aldercreatures & rev-runs. And the next outsider will do the same as long as he is told to do it. Also a BIG part of the problem is that the FOP doesn't have langauge in the contract to prevent these promotions.
