Fake Calls
Police are looking for a man who made three bogus 911 calls from payphones Sunday morning, including ones reporting shots fired and an “officer down” on the Southwest Side.
He made his first call at 7:23 a.m. while at a gas station near the 7800 block of South Western Avenue, according to police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez. The caller claimed he was having a problem or an argument with the gas station attendants there, but when officers got to the scene workers there said that was not true.
A few minutes later he moved to another pay phone near the 7800 block of South Western Avenue and told dispatchers there were shots fired, and then hung up. He called back moments later to say an “officer was down,’’ and hung up again, Perez said.
Officers investigated but found the reports were not bona fide.

LAPD chopper makes emergency landing after being shot

The helicopter landed safely and the pilot and observer on board were not injured, said police Detective Gus Villanueva.
The incident occurred in the Van Nuys area, when police got a call at around 6 a.m. local time (9 a.m . ET) of shots being fired, police said. The helicopter was responding as backup to a patrol car dispatched to the scene.
The helicopter was at the Van Nuys airport after the incident, and was to be put on a flat-bed truck to be towed downtown for investigation and repair, authorities said.
The apparent shooter eventually was subdued by his family members, Villanueva said. A semi-automatic rifle was recovered, he said.
Police got multiple calls that a second gunman was involved, and a search was conducted Sunday afternoon, Villanueva said. That search was called off later, Villanueva said

How nice would it be to work somewhere where 911 calls were bonified and callers told the truth about what happened. And my opinion, coppers need to lock up these callers who say, "I said he had a gun because you never get here fast enough." Lock them up, don't give it a 1P!
What occurred elsewhere to draw cops away from that?
Is there a pattern?,
Look for the same people watching the response just like at arson fires.

Amen. I think we may be the only city in the country to accept anonymous calls for police service. I know in other cities if you don't leave a name or number, they will not respond. We need to start doing that in this shit hole city. Just think you dick heads at 35th street, it will lower overall crime statistics and you head jobs can stroke each other all day.

Aren't all phones "Payphones"?
I responded to similar b.s. calls on Easter night, back in 1993 or 94. 3833 Federal. My partner and I were walking up to the buildin', as a woman and child returning home walked about 15' in front of us. A gunman popped out from behind a recessed corner as we were about 80' from the entrance. We both took cover, as the civilians were in ours (& his) line of fire. Bad guy never fired, and instead disappeared up the stairs. I'll never forget it. Thought I'd eaten my last jellybean.

Your friends the call takers and dispatchers on Madison street risk disciplinary action for pretending that calls such as these, and any others, including nonsense from a dead cell phone, are not bona fide.
Some have been known to file such events anyway.
How often this happens, and whether or not it is appropriate or justified, is left as an exercise for the student. Anonymous will not presume to comment on its significance.
hey scc i actually locked up some pos a couple of years ago for making a bogus 911 call of saying an officer was just shot.while responding to the call, we almost got t-boned by anther responding car.we got felony charges approved cause the pos had a history of making bogus 911 calls.our lives are on the line everyday and crap like this just makes it worse.
If all 3 of the incidents happened around 7800 s Western why wasn't the city checking the cameras in the area to see if they can see someone making the calls on videos?
WOW I can't remember the last time I even saw a payphone out there. Most of the stands are empty everywhere you look.
Unfortunately, it is probably necessary to respond to anonymous calls due to legal decisions, but nowher does it say responding officers have to unnessarily endanger themselves doing so. Judgement calls are made every day in policework, and when an officer has all the available information, it's his or her call, they have the best gut feeling, and experience to determine whats bullshit and what isn't. Thank God for ALL good Police Officers!

Fire can deny to go to calls but we must go to any & all calls even hang ups....wtf!!!

why is this news? It happens all the time. It occurred in 012 two weeks ago with someone saying an officer was shot, then kept calling throughout the day. Someone called 911 in 004 Saturday and said officer was shot too. I hear calls like this often. It was worse years ago when guys would steal a cops radio or use their own and make bogus call for assist. I know it's terrible and understand you're just warning guys to be careful but it's been happening for years.
Aren't most working cops aware of this happening? I would think so!
Why do some people have to steal police radios and do vicious things like make false police reports and interfere with important police traffic. I much prefer the old school criminal when a police radio thief would serenade the troops with some good Motown, tell dirty jokes or just heckle the asswipe bosses on citywide. Something I could respect.

Its unfortunate that citizens make bogus calls, its what they do, whats sad is the people who write this blog dont know that dispatchers dont take calls, call takers do
Brett Goldstein is just going to have to issue passwords to citizens so everyone is accountable for their own calls. Once again the knife cuts both ways. Although how anyone can afford to make a phone call in a phone booth is beyond me. They cost about three dollars.
