Ending With a Whimper

  • Former Chicago police Officer Stephen Del Bosque pleaded guilty today to a misdemeanor civil rights charge stemming from his work in the infamous Special Operations Section, which was disbanded because of a scandal.

Del Bosque, 35, admitted lying on a 2005 police report by falsely claiming he saw a suspect drop two bricks of cocaine. He also lied in testimony before a grand jury, leading to false charges against the suspect.

Del Bosque, who agreed to cooperate with authorities, faces up to 12 months in prison when he is sentenced. Del Bosque joined the department in 2000 and resigned after a probe by state and federal authorities began.

Del Bosque was one of four current or former Chicago police officers who were charged earlier this month in federal court in connection with the SOS scandal. Lawyers for the other three have also indicated each plans to plead guilty to wrongdoing.

No trials, no corruption reaching the highest levels of the department. Just a rogue team with inadequate oversight, the same as most scandals end up being. It's too bad an entire unit where 99% of the officers did nothing wrong got painted with the same brush as that team did. In that way, it's kind of a microcosm of the Department at large. We assume this whole thing will be finished and done with prior to Rahm taking office.

Problem is, this was reported all day as if it was something new, not the result of a 6yr old issue.

Then, the next misdemeanor plea deal will be reported the same way.

Sells more papers, I guess, than telling the whole truth.

Who exactly did he cooperate against if everyone is pleading guilty. This just sounds like the powers that be just want this case to go away so they offfered everyone great deals. These guys went from facing hundreds if years in jail to most getting less than a year. Only two people will actully do more than a year and they are looking at most ten years. But will probably get half of that

This is sad that one boss did not fall for this scandal that deserved to take the heat for this and is still an ADS. A good SGT got let go who was loyal and a good person its sad how the little guys take the fall for the big cowards who hide behind there clout.

This is a shame. Steve is a GREAT guy and he got caught up in some BS, just like E.G. did. I know some of the pundits will chime in saying he got what he deserved but if you truly knew what happened, the real story, you would be upset.

As in EVERYTHING on this job and in this department, clout rules. Ask yourselves why some higher level employees were never brought up on anything?

I wish Steve well.

I think the saying goes, If you can't do the time, well, you know...

The vast majority of us go through our entire career without committing crimes or being put in a position to plead guilty to ANYTHING. If this goof is INNOCENT then shame on him for not having the balls to stand up for himself. If he's guilty, F*CK HIS WORTHLESS CARCASS!

Thes best is every boss that was either in charge during or hand a hand in the investigation was promoted at least one spot since. Tobias, Guilliford, Dugan, Kirby. Where's the accountability?

Your the POLICE kid you know what you got to do out there, Wink, Wink. Trust me you still have many supervisors out there pushing for b.s. numbers. In SOS maybe those who went to far figured, I'm taking short cuts to please the boss I might as well grab something for me.

There is nothing wrong nor illegal for team members to buy their sergeant a Harley. They loved him and came up with their own money from working "paper routes" to be able to afford it. Besides accountability goes down the chain of command, not up. Sarcasm off.

nah, statute of limitations is up on almost everything... official misconduct is up after one year of discovery of the crime and robbery, home invasion etc expired in 2009. bosses wont go down because they cant prove any rico because there is no organized crime involved. Its just 10 unsupervised goofs thinking they were untouchable. If anyone should have went it should have been the deputy chief of sog.. you know, finnegans sponsor who moved him around and kept everything quiet because he knew what was going on...

hate to burst your bubble but the G has actually concluded its case. Court papers that were filed by fitzgeralds office when the pleas were offered detailed the investigation and said that these indictments were the culmination of the investigation thus deeming the case closed for future investigation. You can read the papers that were filed online along with the legal brief and details of the deals issued by fitzgeralds office. you can read these as long as you have a p.a.c.e.r. login which many do not... however I do. The G is out of this one and its done with. Not really the huge outcome I was expecting.

Steve is a great guy and a good copper. His crime was doing what he was told to do. Anyone who knows the story knows that steve was not a part of the team he just transferred in and worked 2 weeks with the team. He, like EO, got caught up in the wash of the FED trying to make it all look like a good case. I wish him well. I will be waiting to see if the white shirts are held accountable................Nah, what was I thinkin

I am not sure that this is over. Either Rahm and the powers that be want this to go away, or they might want to make an example of some people. Remember, the government is known to sit on things for long periods of time. Considering the leiniency shown so far, you have to wonder if someone isn't talking. Time will tell.

What a couple of disgusting morons hoping that more of our own get indicted. This is what the department has become? This is not the department
I joined well over twenty years ago. These two, and anyone with the same sentiment, are true POS!!! You're worse than Weis ever was if this is the case.

It's a shame, steve is a good person and was on the team for such a short period of time and paid the price. That could have been any of us. We do what's asked of us and we are pushed until we break or we get dumped. It's a shame. This will not change what I think of steve a good man and a good cop. And to those who pushed numbers this is what happens and when it does "poof" you are gone to push the next guy. Good luck steve take care of your family.
