Crazy Time

The moon is so close, it's affecting the tides in our glass of scotch:
  • If the moon looks a little bit bigger and brighter this weekend, there's a reason for that. It is.

Saturday's full moon will be a super "perigee moon" -- the biggest in almost 20 years. This celestial event is far rarer than the famed blue moon, which happens once about every two-and-a-half years.
There was some study not too long ago that claimed the widely held belief that the mentally disturbed come out more during a full moon was unsupported by the facts. Maybe the crazies were just a little more crazy than usual, so it was just a different brand of nuttiness, but some of our favorite stories from the old timers involved a full moon.

All the studies in the world can't contradict more than a quarter century of policing. I don't know how many times some Twilight Zone insanity descended on us and one of us looked up and asked, "Is it a full moon?"

It always was.

There is no question that a full moon brings out all of the goofs.

The craziest shift in MY CPD career was working tact on a weekend, during an unseasonably warm Halloween night, that also happened to be a full moon in and around Cabrini-Green, back around 1979-80 when Cabrini was a hopping bed of criminal insanity all its own!

It all added up to a 'perfect storm' of strange, crazy, violent and, at times, hilarious human behavior. Several flash messages that were put out sounded like this: Offender # 1 was a male dressed as a Vampire, victim states she noticed that he had large bloody canine teeth! Offender # 2 was a male in a Skeleton costume.

We were sooo busy rushing from one in-progress call to another that the night was over before you knew it. That was back when being the police was fun.

The last time a "Full Moon" reached this type of exposure was about 22 years ago when all the media lined up to smooch the anal region of Short Shanks.

The busiest single tour of duty I ever had was in the late 80s.

It was:
1. A Full Moon.
2. On Saturday Night,
3. It was also the day the clocks were turned back,
4. It was also Halloween and
5. It was about 65 degrees too.

It was wild. A Perfect Storm somewhat.

What former (LOL) IAD rat just finished her assignment in a unit and will be moving to another great unit next period? She will tell all the people there she never worked in IAD! but when she is quizzed she will say I was there years ago and now have no connection there! Myself I am a "Former Marine" but there is no such thing as a "former MARINE" So I am a MARINE! Does that work with IAD also? Of course not, how many coppers got jammed up? How about the copper with extreme political connections that put her in her place and now she is going to ruin another unit! Watch her take notes boys and girls!

Yeah, we have just about the same conditions now.

1. First day of Spring

2. Lunar perigee (super full moon)

3. Just had huge Class X solar flare, geomagnetic storm

4. Terrible earthquakes

5. Clocks just turned ahead

I think it would say in your fortune cookie, "Do not sign any binding documents on such a day."

I have seen someone try to blow up an occupied apartment building. (I won't provide the instructions, but it would have definitely gone up.)

The woman's drug-dealing burglar, parolee husband who had sense enough not to live with her anymore (as differentiated from her registered-sex-offender father up the street) showed up to state that "she had mental issues," and that was that.

Everyone in the building lived in terror of her return for months -- the insane landlord crying "I can't throw her out, she has a lease" -- until she decided the time was right to call the police to provide Her Royal Highness with an escort to come back to the apartment for five minutes and get her dirty underwear.

Remember the guy who was running around downtown, attacking women, beating them, breaking jaws and arms? The Chicago Tribune finally devoted the entire back page of Section 1 as a special on this guy before he was scraped up. Same "issues."

A friend's wife was nearly pushed off the subway platform downtown by a woman who'd tried this before. Same "issues."

Now you know what to say if you get in trouble.

I had really horrible nightmares last night, woke up sweating, etc. Usually I'm fine -- it wasn't habanero sauce either, didn't have any with dinner...

Yeah, it always is, and it kind of amplifies itself in the strangest way...you can be OK but you look around and people are tripping on curbs, driving like they are under anaesthesia, jumping a foot in the air if you say "Hello," everything a little out of kilter...

--3/20/2011 10:49:00 AM

That's good to hear -- this was serious, and the dics used to come out for a lot less when they weren't so hard-pressed. Whatever you might think sometimes, the visit was VERY IMPORTANT to the hospitalized victim -- purse snatched, elderly, injured -- and helped them deal a little better with the whole thing, that someone knew about and cared about what had happened to them and would try to do something.

The detectives were always very welcome -- that "crime victim's compensation" fund paperwork was just too much for some people, though; they had to get new locks put on, all-new ID, new glasses, replace medication, etc. and it can be overwhelming.

We need more detectives. We need a lot of things...

Poor woman. I've been scalded, water right off an old-fashioned boiler. A hose whipped around. Hurts like anything. I don't care who you are, you scream. Can be a terrible shock at that age, and then the risk of infection...will say a prayer. I do that a lot these days...

W/W 125 gr. .38 Spec +P Silvertips in 1 7/8" barrel = big white flash, unforgettable detailed high-speed photo of two dog a___holes suddenly running the other way. Didn't know that attacking German Shepherds could do a 180 in 1/1000 second, but there it was. A complete backflip, maybe?

That "perfect storm" night you had in the 80's was probably one of the best nights you had on this department. Had many of those and I wouldn't trade them for anything! We all backed each other up, the bosses included, and then all went out for drinks and laughed at the inhumanity of man....
