Now This is Some Police Work

  • A North Side man has been charged with murder in the home-invasion killing Oct. 27 of jeweler Shai Miller at Miller's Sauganash home.

Fingerprints left on duct tape that authorities say Leszek Pawelkowski and an unidentified second man used to bind Miller and Miller's 14-year-old son led police to Pawelkowski, Cook County state's attorney's office [...] said.

Lifting prints off duct tape? Have you ever thought about duct tape? The backing is a crosshatching of thread work and the sticky side a complete mess of glue. And someone at the lab was able to get a print off of that?

Very nicely done.

The animal who killed this man should be tried and then hung. I don't know why so many people are against the death penalty. Animals like this who would kill just for immaterial things like money or jewelry deserve to be hung.

Word has it that a Sergeant assigned to the Internal Affairs Division has been named as an Battery Offender in a General Offense Case Report. To narrow the field down he was one of few Sergeants assigned to the 3rd Watch. Apparently he got a little heavy handed during hockey practice and assaulted a child. It seems to me that he should (At a bare minimum) be removed from the Unit until this matter is resolved. Once again, another clear example of double standards within the department. Had he pushed and pulled on my child there might have been two case reports filed.

Superintendent Weis I sure you have been briefed on this matter so what are you prepared to do. This Sergeant can be out there stripping someone as I type. That just doesn’t seem fair. Only a man with a substance abuse problem would assault another man’s son.

Abby Sciuto has been doing this on NCIS for years. TV crime shows are light years ahead of the CPD.

After 20 years with a wheel gun and 10 years with a semi-auto I just got some good training on a carbine. The CPD considers this and the shotgun "heavy weapons" and reportedly there are brass at the Training Academy who will take them away as soon as jody weis is gone.

Remember when Gary Schenkel (former US Marine Lt Col; current Director, Office of Federal Protective Service) was unceremoniously dumped as soon as Terry Hillard retired? Similar things will happen to jody weis' programs and reforms. Look for the return of teletype machines and white stripes down the uniform pant legs. And call box keys.

This is not to be confused with a progressive police department.

Besides, it was likely the FBI lab that lifted that print.

We were just notified by mail that our health insurance deductible for next year is going UP from $500 per person to $800 per person.

As a retiree, I'm already paying $700 a month for the insurance to begin with.

I guess all us old guys are going to be paying for the "free" insurance of the new retirees.

Taking prints off tape is easy. The old super glue fume trick can work,so could the older Iodine sublimation trick, but it doesnt last long.

Alternative light sources and digital capturing(photography) can "capture" the print and then can be used for comparison.

Multiple mothods have been used over the years to develop latent prints on varios surfaces. Normally prints are found on smoothe, clean surfaces, but additional laboratory techniques are used to find prints on difficult surfaces. For example super glue which was developed by the Japanese. Prints on the sticky side of tape are recovered with gentian violet, sticky powder and laser. Just a tip from a old retired 4n6 guy,

After 20 years with a wheel gun and 10 years with a semi-auto I just got some good training on a carbine. The CPD considers this and the shotgun "heavy weapons" and reportedly there are brass at the Training Academy who will take them away as soon as jody weis is gone.

To whomever this was, we're glad you appreciated and saw the value of the Carbine Class. November 26th is the Mumbai Terrorism Incident's anniversary. Stay vigilant, be aware, keep a go bag with you favorite flavored ammo.

"...Pawelkowski's fingerprints reportedly were on file after an arrest for drinking in the public way..."

Well,well,well-- Those "pimpy" DOPW arrests the tact teams get endless crap about might just serve a bigger purpose! Think bigger picture lads, bigger picture!

This is one hundred percent true. Thanks guys for arresting people even on petty crimes or ROWC. It gets us pics that we can use later for photo arrays.
Yes, look at the big picture. It is great have pics and prints on file.

Are we really still using M1's? I'm not trying to insult you, because you are correct about being prepared, but our firearms use magazines, not clips.

I work there and enjoy working there. Yes, there are some different personalities there, but the Stalag could be worse. If you had a real job where you worked for a living before you came here, you'd appreciate this job a bit more than you do. It can always be worse than it is. I really doubt it's much different from any of the other districts.

I analyzed that and predicted an arrest.

The beautiful result of two acts:

1. A police officer arrested a young man in possession of a stolen radio from an auto. He was unable to establish who the actual owner was, but the arrestee confessed to breaking into the car and stealing the radio.
RESULT: His ONE AND ONLY arrest and fingerprinting.

2. A Crime Lab Technician, a police officer, finds ONE fingerprint upon the steering wheel of a homicide victim.
RESULT: The OFFENDER IS IDENTIFIED.

Yes, the 17 year old, arrested once, later stabbed a man to death, after an argument, then got into the man's car to flee.

So remember, EVERY SINGLE BIT of police work IS IMPORTANT. Always follow through with what you have, no matter how trivial it may seem.

You may never know the ultimate success achieved by your actions.

Just a Retired Cop

Don't let the shiney surface of duct tape fool you, finger prints can be detected and removed if done properly. Also if the orginal roll of duct that was envolved can be located,it can be linked to the crime/incident.
