No More, "I'll Let You Know Squad"

We would rest so much easier if we never heard those words on the radio again.

The time has come to advocate for real change and to demonstrate how the political and Department administrations have compromised Officer Safety so badly over the past few years. We are running too many cars as 10-99 units on all three watches. What used to be a rarity when the sun went down is now standard practice, and even the days of having half-a-dozen 10-4 units on the street during daylight hours (jokingly called the "domestic cars") seem long gone.

If Dispatch offers you a back-up, it's time to swallow your pride and accept it. It doesn't matter who it is, be it hair gel, the watch dog-ass, grizzled vet, whomever. Having a second cop available might just tip the scale in your favor if someone decides to make a run at the police.

If Dispatch doesn't offer you back-up, there isn't an order in existence that says you can't ask for it, even on a dope job that's 45 minutes old. If Dispatch says no back-up is available, well that's just too fucking bad. Repeat your request, ask for a time check, and have a supervisor up on the air tell you to ride 99. Because we're willing to bet there isn't a white shirt out there that is going to send you solo on a job, knowing that you asked for back-up, and knowing that there is an official audio recording in existence. If they try to blackball you or SPAR you or lower your so-called "efficiency ratings" based on safety concerns, then you document it, you contact FOP and you raise a stink.

Fuck this Department's RAPs. We all go when it's safe to go. And we damn sure all go home at the end of the shift. The days of "I'll let you know squad" should be long gone. And when it takes an hour or more to get to serious crimes, maybe someone will point out that our responding to so much bullshit instead of actual crime is impacting public safety, maybe we'll start to see some leadership - something that has been sorely lacking for a long time.

The Mayor has been in office for over twenty years and the list of neighborhoods with crime out of control are growing. There should not be any neighborhood out of control. The police should control the streets.

What's with this gun ban? Unsafe gun list. Last time I checked criminals don't give a rats ass about gun bans.

Every officer should carry two handguns and a rifle.

How about sending two officers to every call in a level II, III and IV Dock area. The department by its own deployment states these areas are out of control.

Daley made this mess and spent all the money and is going off to the sunset. All Daley's

Typical kneejerk reaction by the CPD. Now the beat car waits for the E/T.

We should have been doing this since the beginning of time. Only now, in the wake of one of the horrific tragedies to befall us this year, does a little practicality and common sense come into play.

WTF is going on? Just read on another thread that one of the baddest officers in MSF formerly in 006 was snitched on by other officers for being too rough on the street and made a house mouse. For Pete's sake, have you seen the bloodshed the past week? Too rough? I'll take MT as a partner any day of the week. He's a natural at giving attitude adjustments and he'll ensure you see your family at the end of the day.

Yep this is true unfortunately. They stuck Purple Shades on the desk cuz appearantly he didn't posses enough west side cop arrogance and cockiness that some (not all) 011 dist guys posses. Also this due to some on his team pissing their pants when a TRR has to be done. Between the 7 of them is less than 15 years of police experience, but appearantly they know it all, just ask them!

That airhead f/2 (from 010) partner he had sure didn't help matters, when she would run and snitch shortly after talking in the confidence of the squad car. Oh and D.S. and J.L. were never slow to kiss the W/C's ass and fill him in on whatever and whomever. The rest just target the hypes for an easy head or do dui's.

Purple Shades is a great cop who will help you out in any way. He may not be the most aggresive guy, but he knows how to be the police when he has to be. He's a combat vet, and has done more for others than he has for his own self, cuz that's the kind of guy he is. And he has a helluva lot more people on his side, as opposed to the self promoting goofs that got him moved. Word of advice...don't get yourselves into a situaton that you can't handle, since next time M.T. ain't going to be there to help you out

ok... you want all 10-4 cars on all watches then be prepared to have pretty much all time off denied due to zero man power and the in ability to fill enough cars on the watches. im all for officer safety but you want all 10-4 cars you better watch what you wish for. just everyone back eachother up on jobs that are needed. I could care less weather I have a partner or not. I just know that when another car needs help I go immediatly just like I expect others to do the same. If im on a job and somebody needs help then I leave that job and come back...its that simple.

I pulled this out of the 'please just leave, jfled' thread.

Consider the impact your death or disability would have on your family and others, before you give that final, fatal, wave-off to the dispatcher, please:
====
That's the problem. I heard way too many officers tell the dispatcher "give that other car a disregard squad. I'll let you know".
--
As a sergeant, newly returned to patrol in 1996, I was shocked how many times I heard this the first few days. It stopped when I took each of those people aside later on and told them they WOULD NOT do that when working for me.
There is ZERO time to 'let you know, squad' once a bullet has entered your brain. At that point, it's way too late, not just for you, but for your family and your friends, your pets and your unborn grandchildren. It's too late for the elderly neighbor you shoveled the walk for and it's too late for the kid you might someday have saved from an abuser.
Dispatch is REQUIRED to send backup for a REASON. Let them.

I will do only what is feasible with able assistance, or I'll wait until it is AVAILABLE!

Note to 3M: Don't bother to suit up on my behalf. I wouldn't consider your arrival on the scene of anything to be something that would tip the scales in my favor.

The worst offender of the "no backup" is the female dispatcher on Zone 1 1st watch. She always tells the 10-99 cars to "yell real loud" if they need help.

Ask fo the back up! You're a pussy if you don't. Request a back up even for a traffic/street stop. You are NOT required to be injured in the performance of your job.

The staffing levels are the mayor's fault. Let him and the 50 thieves take the heat for the back logs and longer response times.

It's all about survival and going home to your loved ones after every tour.

As a side note, ever notice that alderthief Burke doesn't go to bat for police staffing levels or medical benefits, especialy IOD. But he sure likes to write books about the police.

The Superintendent stated that he was going to look into how ET’s are assigned. That’s not a bad idea but falls a little short. Why not look at what JOBS are being dispatched? We don’t need to assign the police to parking complaints or backing up fire on a person who is having a seizure. After you arrive you get one of two responses, “Who called you, we didn’t” or you learn from the dispatcher, after you ask, “ Fire has returned to quarters!”

Is it really a police matter when the 9 year old tells their mother that they aren’t going to school?, or How about the ‘he disrespected me’ calls.
Here’s a hint Mr. Superintendent, when it is just a ‘paper job’ send it to call back no if what’s or buts about it. Get the stones to tell the citizens that they don’t need a face to face for a report. That will free up the little manpower that we do have.

P.S. Why don’t you climb out of that giant SUV and walk into a police station and see the wasted manpower. Do commanders really need a staff of 5 PO’s? There can’t be that much work for all of them because they split their (6 hour) shifts, (less on the weekends). Why not give review officers some of the front office work so we can free up police from the front offices and review can put in a full half day! Did you forget we have gone to a paperless department? Check the percentages of reports completed on the computer. Just about every unit is over 85%, yet we have three or four review officers sitting around waiting for their 6 hours to be up so they can go home. These reports go straight to the detective units without ever being touched by a review officer. Why not split their day in review and the front office or front desk/lockup. Make the commanders responsible for these officers instead of telling everyone ‘it always been that way so I’m not going to change it…’

Can’t see the forest for the trees . . .. . . . .

This summer in my district, cops were responding to a lot of jobs 99 since no help was available. Well too fucking bad. I always told my fellow P.O.'s don't work 99 and don't respond to jobs 99. Anecdotal or otherwise, the following officers were among those who were executed for but one reason. Regardless of their race, all were BLUE.

Jim Severin and Tony Rizzato, CPD TF-6
Kenny Kaner, CPD 007
Joe Cali, CPD 013
Joe Piagentini and Waverly Jones, NYPD, 32nd Pct. (Harlem)
Gregory Foster and Rocco Laurie, NYPD, 9th Pct. (Lower East Side)

All were assassinated with their holstered weapons solely because they were the police.

Could the murders of Mike Flisk and Dave Blake fall into that same category?

At the time a lone Kenny Kaner was all but decapitated with a shotgun blast on midnights, he was parked writing a report on a missing at 74th & Union. They just wanted to "dome a cop".

You guys have to stand together on the issue of 2 officer cars during the hours of darkness if not 24/7.

The night after Kenny was murdered, I was a detective working 007. I was so proud to watch the entire midnight crew refuse a direct order to work solo cars.

Within 24 hours, the City ordered that ALL beat cars would ride as deuces on the 3rd and 1st watches throughout the city..

This was further reenforced when a lone Bob Wenzel was murdered on Lake Shore Dr. in 018.

Personally, while I never had to shoot anyone (my partner did and saved our lives on the very first job of my career), I had my weapon drawn at my side in view on "routine" encounters. While I may have been respectful, even with a smile on my face, my message was crystal clear: "Don't even think about it, muthafucka or you're DEAD."

When all checked out well, I'd politely bid the stop a good night and reholster my weapon.

scc you are right but look at it from another perspective--- the city plans on hiring only 200 officers next year which will do nothing to eliminate raps--- as the raps pile up and the phone starts ringing management at the district level has to do something--- they will most likely curtail time due and only let a few people have the day off which will piss people off more than anything--- it's not the district bosses fault that we are short handed--- we might just have to suck it up and handle some 10-4 jobs as a 99 unit if we ever want to see time due next summer....

That's cool. Deny away. All that means is all the time builds up and the city grows a huge unfunded liability. The secret is that the city WANTS you to use your time due. It is much less painful to them than having to pay it out some day and see it on the books as a financial liability.

We will win this.

Another intentional stymie to bog down the Police.

At least 75% of what's dispatched should be handled by call-back and other city agencies.

Hey SCC, you certainly haven't been anywhere near to my near westside district because if you ever had been you would not be needlessly piling a lot of shit on the supervisors. In my district I could never pay enough to get two-thirds of the blueshirts to back-up a fellow officer. They simply don't. Ever. The fifty-something whiteshirts, by contrast invaribly are first to respond and arrive at almost any job-from the mundane domestic or suspicious man call to the person shot. There's a work ethic missing since the early nineties and don't blame me. I could SPAR assholes into oblivian and they'll do even less and I'll be making Earl Schieb a ton of money painting the key marks of of the family car. And not one sergeant on the zone would ever order someone to a job by himself. Despite the fact thats how I typically respond.

and in most cases the victim has none. I hope my backup is not flying from the other side of the district but we still must do our job! I'm no hero, idiot, housemouse or unit guy. I have a duty to protect the same ass wipes that hate the uniform I proudly wear.
I think it is time for supervisors to supervise again. I see it everyday station assignments , two hr. T.V.B's ,Four cars down to look at a suicide amd my personal favorite the warrant list! Thanks for taking that traffic warrant in custody so you dont have to handle a job. We are our own enemy.
I quess what I'm saying is if you don't think that getting killed or hurt is not part of you job, maybe its time to rethink a new career. I would second that if you got yourself into a bind, he would be there to get you out. Takes control of situations like nobody else. When he barks orders, you can hear him loud and clear. Put it this way, the gangs know when he's on scene that he is not Officer Friendly. I've never observed him being overly aggressive like he is being accused of by his former team. He just doesn't let people get over on the police. That's not a bad thing in my opinion. Keep your chin up MT! Guys of your caliber always tend to land on their feet. Plain and simple: No one man cars at anytime including supervisors. Politicians are protected with multiple police/body guards (When was the last time they were threatened with actual harm and police action was taken?) No officer of any rank should ride alone at anytime. Really ,is there anything more important than our own safety?

while I agree with the idea of this, its not realistic. Guys feel they can handle anything and if need arises they will call for backup. Other coppers also dont want to screw other coppers by requesting a backup if that unit is doing something, etc. May sound dumb, but thats reality. I worked days 99 briefly and in the unit i was in backup was generally very good. Many guys would ride on jobs that werent their own. If anything its time we volunteer to be an assist unit more often and ride on more jobs. I know how stupid this sounds but coppers arent the types to want to put others out, meaning they prefer to handle it if they can, rather than make another officer stop doing whatever he/she is doing. VOLUNTEER or simply ride with others, its just a more realistic way. STAY SAFE

You know I agree with the not riding alone on jobs and as a supervisor Im guilty I do handle jobs by myself or if total bullshit jobs that are pending drugs, disturbance or some other nonsense with no complainant I just have the zone dupem to me 19-P. I worked many a times 99 when pushing a beat car in the old Fort Forgotten (015) sometimes you dreaded the back up that was coming because when that officer arrivied on the scene and you had everyting solved you knew when he or she pulled up and opened their big fucking mouth it was an automatic 10-1 just a thought. Blended household in 015 thats rich you musta been dealing with the family that lives on the 1045 n Leamington.

In the Dupage suburb, I dispatch at, it is the dispatcher's responsibility not to send only one officer. When there is not a back up, the dispatchers notify the watch commander via radio to take the "pressure" off of the officers. SCC, I think that this issue should be a post that is posted over and over or perhaps as a side bar campaign. No more 99!!!

I've known Purple Shades over 2 yrs now in MSF. The standing joke in MSF was that MT should be placed in glass with a sign reading "in case of emergency break glass".. He is a good man/cop/soldier who takes care of his family and friends. Gives of himself all the time. He needs to be a little more selfish on the job, because he is getting walked over in the unit A LOT.
He's an intense fighter who can be counted on. I trust him out there having my back on the street more than others. When he got placed on the 20 team I knew he wouldn't make the cut. MY Sgt even told us MT was getting the short end of the stick and that the 20 team is known for getting rid of good coppers they don't think are popular. They tell everything to the Lt. With the 20 team, it's not about policing, but about who is most popular. MT has never fit in with kiss ass mentality. He is of the kick ass and take names mentality. Thank God for that! Seeing MT on the MSF desk just makes me realize I need to be even more watchful of my surroundings. When he was outside I knew I would be solid if something jumped off. Hopefully our guy will be back in action soon.

I'm a supervisor and I volunteer to back up guys in my district on a regular basis.I can't ignore a citizen who needs help or an officer who might need a hand. I'll stand behind an officer who waits for a backup all the way. The city isn't concerned with our safety or the public's safety. It's up to us to look out for each other.

This supervisor is 100% correct. Whenever a PO needs a back up and no units are available, a Sgt always answers up. I agree with the original posters sentiment, but his rant about supervisors is way off base. No supervisor would ever punish an officer for requesting back up.

Off the subject but not really. What the hell is going on in the 15th district? The sally port has been down for at least 2 months. Talk about officer safety, having to park the car on the street and then walk with the mutt to the side door, perfect time for some of his peeps to come get him if they want. Also P.O.'s car broken into in the lot right next to the station and another P.O.'s car was tampered with. These mutts are able to walk right through the lot with no problem. The back of the lot is not secure, they are able to cut right through. Same with letting these assholes out when they are I-bonded, right out the back door through the lot where the squads are parked and to the front of the station so they can get their property back. Something bad is going to happen. But according to J-FLED there is nothing to do to secure the lots. WAKE UP dipshit and take a tour of the districs, make sure you bring someone along with you who has an idea about officer safety like a real police officer. Keep your hand on your pistol when walking through the parking lots of 15 and I'm sure there are many others. Confront everyone you see milling around the lots and lock them up.

they need to privatize the desk/lockups and send all the lazy, self entitled westside, inside do nothings out to the street where they can back us up!!! There is not a report on the desk that cannot be completed by a $8 hour civilian. Have 1 PO there for ticket writing or any other police matters, and every other lazy bastard HIT THE FUCKING STREET!!! We need bodies backing us up! And I dont care how many years you have on, how much ass you kicked, blood you drew...blah blah blah...I DONT CARE! You are entitled to nothing! You need to be out there earning your $85+k/year! Half the problem is these lazy "old school KMA" clowns that feel like they dont have to be in a hurry for anything. Last week, in 023 there was the NU/U of I game at Wrigley. A call comes out to assist the police on clark, just north of addison on the 019 side. Two of these idiots, both with cigarettes dangling, (one about 400 lbs the other looks like he hasnt been sober since the first democratic convention) sitting on their dead asses on a papv heard the call, pointed across the street as if to say "thats in 019" and didnt fucking move!! You could see the "hey, kid, you got nuttin...its all a bunch of bullshit" written all over their faces! A beat car from the opposite end of the district gets assigned and these "old school" losers just sit there smoking their cig and not doing shit! I ran there from 2 blocks away and was able to give a slow down...just a drunk giving it to a copper who had a bad radio and had to call 9-1-1 on his cell to get help (a gripe fo another post)!!! If you think you have too much time on this job to back up another copper, it's time for you to go! AND DONT LET THE DOOR HIT YOU ON YOUR LAZY, WORTHLESS, DO NOTHING KMA ASS ON THE WAY OUT!!!

this is one of the smartest posts on the blog i have seen thus far. i don't care if u are in the slowest district in the city, there are violent people out there. remember officer Francis from 19. Few of us would have thought of 19 as a dangerous place before that tragedy. How wrong we were. All cars should be 10-4. NYPD operates this way and their academy emphasizes the importance of watching your partners back in a way our academy and department do not. The FOP should be outspoken about the importance of operating 10-4 in all districts and watches. this might mean shrinking or disbanding units, tact teams, etc. in order to fully staff beat cars. so be it. officer safety demands it, the FOP should push for it, the city council should honor it, and not one more officer, ET, or sergeant should die this year because the department did not implement this needed change.
A westside PO who has had enough this year.

Why privatize desk and lock-up jobs. The little prick has privatized enough in this city, whether it be jobs or assets, and we still have nothing to show for it. Where did all that money go?

That being said, I think the D/C should get a pass on having to respond to calls for service. W/C's are required by directive to spend time in the field so I can't see them getting a free pass.

HIRE HIRE HIRE, There are numerous ways to add manpower give me five minutes with HR of the city.
1. Allow current city workers who qualify to transfer over to the police- this would essnetial cost very little and save the city money in some cases if not all.

2. Hire certified officers/surburban and send them through a retread style academy.

3. Decreasing funding in other departments (there is one on particular that can easily afford to lose a little if not a lot.) This would free up money to hiring more than the 200 or so off the new test. Maybe 300/400

This would allow the city to add like rouhgly 750 or so officers to the streets and cost a limited amount. Allowing city workers to transfer over you would get quite a few(teachers, streets and sanitations park district, etc. etc. etc). Going for already certifed suburban guys you could grab maybe 50-100 more and then by hiring the orgianlly 200 you plan and decreasing hiring in other departments you could grab anohter 100/200 and then you would have 750 on the streets in less than a year. ITS not hard to figure this out! CITY HALL WAKE UP USE those law degrees, graduate degrees, and whatever else you have and do something!!!!!!!!!

2. Rev. M. who as a state senator believes catholic schools should be unindated by ghetto rats at the taxpayer's expense. Believe me, that will be first on his agenda.

3. Two hispanics who are already crying about immigration reform. This city is already paying out the nose for illegal's anchor babies brand new school buildings while mom and dad are here illegally sending cash back to Mexico via Western union and they still refuse to speak or learn English, let alone our culture, but they sure know how to howl for free money and the continuous handouts by the US citizens.

4. a former US senator who personally knows all about fraud and hangs out with characters wh commit fraud.

anyone who votes for any of these freaks are fools.

The worst offender of the "no backup" is the female dispatcher on Zone 1 1st watch. She always tells the 10-99 cars to "yell real loud" if they need help.

You mean MJ the dog turd dispatcher who rats out POs to the Sgt giving up locations from tracker with out a safety socitation from a Sgt violating GOs! The whole watch hates her with a passion and wouldn't urinate on her if she was aflame. She requests information she has no need for and attempts to undermine investagation such as "anyone find that gun yet?"
You'd think she signed their Sgts checks the way a few dance around kissing her butt. She sends POs on 99 calls that should be 10-4 all the time and ask for an assist and your reply "ya alright" wait, wait, wait, then she asks if there is a car and does not assign one till she finds no reply. Humm if you going to abuse the tracker look for the closet car and assign it asshat! Thankfully the good Sgts will just man up and take control of her bullcrap call.
A couple of guys ride on as many jobs as they can but thats not the norm and it should be. A few of the Sgts are discplined enough to advise it and also back their men up.
Too bad the Sgt don't just get together and CR her butt into leaving our zone cause there are better dispatcher at OEMC who someone might actually want to invite to watch party.

ok... you want all 10-4 cars on all watches then be prepared to have pretty much all time off denied due to zero man power and the in ability to fill enough cars on the watches.

Don't forget furloughs. You think that the restrictions they put on this years 12 and 13 segments will go away starting the 1st. Guess again. Just like time due, I'll bet that E.B. will enforce that rule UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

It will probably start next year with the summer furloughs. You won't be able to extend beyond the Sunday before or after your segment.

Why don't they just bring back working your district on your RDO? Hell, I sure that you could get a good number of officers to work this, especially if they paid time and a half.

Rudy Giuliani tamed New York City, it was out of control when he became Mayor and within 2 or 3 years, the crime level dropped substantially.

Not true he played with the numbers and the police hated him.

11/29/2010 06:57:00
Not even close. Rudy fudged the numbers like we our department is now doing. NYPD hated him!!! I've met a few members of NYPD and the very mention of his name evokes a negative response.

Does Richie Daley & Co have just one body guard or two? If he has two guards on him or two guards on the wife, shame on them. You have officers working 99 in 011, 015 and other horrible districts.

Anyone have the answer?

just axin

they need to privatize the desk/lockups and send all the lazy, self entitled westside, inside do nothings out to the street where they can back us up!!!

That's nice they can be illegals and make minimum wage like the custodial workers in the station who use to be city workers (union) making a living wage. Daley Privatized it now the greedy private owner pockets the extra cash from the tax payers.

Privatizing is a bad deal for the middle class, however its a great deal for big corporations to keep them wealthy on the backs of unions and middle Americans.

Thats because Compstat (CPD's version is IClear) was developed around the same time Giuliani was elected. Crime has been down nationwide from the development of such computer programs....Imagine that....computers killing crime!

11/29/2010 04:25:00 PM

IClear is a computer application; Compstat is an accountability forum which the current CAR meetings in Chicago are supposed to be modeled after ... but aren't.

There are gangbangers on the street that have absolutley no regard for life, let alone any respect for police which we have seen over and over again this past year, and yet there is an officer placed on the desk because his "team" feels he is too aggressive towards these same gangbangers. Wow, just wow.

I just ran into 2 guys I went to the academy with 16 years ago at a benefit last week and they both had to take early retirement due to injuries they got on the job. The 1st guy we will Jack was chasing a man with a gun and fell over a fence and ruptured 3 discs in his back and has very limited movement in his upperbody due to the injury. The board that reviews the claims and decides how much the officer will get (50% or 75% etc..) noted that he had gone on the medical when he 1st got on the job due to a back injury and Jack explained that he hurt his back fighting with an offender in a domestic battery call out south and never reported it because he was just gonna ice it and take a hot shower for a couple of days. Well he found that ice and a hot shower didnt help and the doctor he went and saw said he did some damage to his lower lumbar area. The Police Dept denied his claim since he didnt do an IOD claim immediately or even a couple of days later so he got screwed. Jack ened up with 50% instead of 75% for the rest of life because he didnt fill out an IOD which would have taken no time and he wanted me to tell everyone who will listen that no matter how minor an injury may seem that you should ALWAYS do and IOD and ALWAYS go to the hospital! He now has to live on that salary with a wife and 4 children (one of whom is a special needs child who requires his wife to watch her 24hrs a day) PLEASE for your safety and your families future ALWAYS do and IOD when you get injured no matter what! Godbless you all.

I'm going to play Devil's Advocate here. If a team of 7 officers felt the need to have MT dumped from their team, shouldn't that hold more weight? Who gives a rat's ass about his service to his Country or what he may have done in the past. This is about today. Clearly he IS the problem and what they did should be commended. It's not easy having to report a fellow officer to a boss. Maybe now MT will rethink how to act on the street? They probably saved him from becoming a media news story. I'm just sayin. Kudos to the 20 team!

MT has a strong presence about him. I'm going to seriously miss hearing him barking out orders to gang members on traffic and street stops. LOUD!!! I swear when he yells, you can hear him a block away. I'm sure his team hated that about him, but it got the attention of ALL out there. Nobody could deny he didn't give verbal direction. His words and actions told people that he was there to make sure his fellow officers went home safe. Can't believe MT is an MSF housemouse now? What is going on at Homan these days?

Actually heard a female po in 008 utilize your suggestion. She was assigned a BA, and told dispatch, "can you send me a back up car, squad?" I was surprised, since said female po is a self annointed super-cop. Guess she heard it here.

--Very Good! Someone has to start. Traffic accidents can get out of hand; missing person reports where the crazy comes back home while you are doing the report; BA's where someone might still be there. BE CAUTIOUS! BE SAFE! Don't be a hero!

That goes for "request for supervisor" jobs, too. The complainant is usually pissed off at the police already. Sergeants should not be responding to those assignments alone.

--Make sure to tell the dispatcher if you have non-priority jobs in your stacking and a priority job comes out, that you're going to the priority job first.
Had a dispatcher assign me to a PD Crash and 10 seconds later assigned a Sgt to a domestic because no cars were available. Told dispatcher that the crash could wait and I was going to back up the Sgt. These paper jobs can wait!

The FOP should be outspoken about the importance of operating 10-4 in all districts and watches. this might mean shrinking or disbanding units, tact teams, etc. in order to fully staff beat cars. so be it.
___________________________________

For YEARS the FOP has telling officers NOT to work 99. Go to a union meeting or pick up a newsletter and read it.

Everyone is worried about getting time due denied, or pissing off the watch commander.

I remember just getting off probabation 18 years ago and being sent to a new district on 1st watch. My first night they put me on a one man car.

I asked the desk sgt if I could work a two man car and was told they were short handed, but not to worry, the 2 man car in the bt next to mine will keep an eye on me. I then asked the WC, he never forgave me for that.

I've been a dispatcher for 13 years. Worked one of the busiest zones on the busiest watch for 11 of those years. My significant other is on the job as well as many family members and friends. I have heard "I will let you know squad all too many times. I will never accept that again, not even for a barking dog complaint. I had the air on city wide 2 on Friday and it broke my heart to frantically call that beat and get no answer. A silent key... I am committed for the duration of my career to never send a 99 unit on a job again, even if they wave off back up. We have to stick together.
-
SCC this type of thing happens in the suburbs too and its just a matter of time before a suburban cop ends up the same way and THEY ARE ALL 99 UNITS...I listen to the zone and marvel at the jobs beat cars are sent alone too... Suburban cops have a luxury in the suburbs to be close by and granted some suburbs are as big as 1 district but its nice to see the flashing lights knowing the cavalry is there... A HERO AINT NOTHING BUT A SANDWICH!!!

Off the subject but not really. What the hell is going on in the 15th district? The sally port has been down for at least 2 months

clearly you are new. stop whining about a sally port junior. weve gone without a sally port for my entire career. Im in a new building which we have been in for just a little over 5 years and nobody even uses the sally port. park your car in the lot or in the street and bring the bad guy in. god these new guys are pussies.

11/29/2010 03:58:00 PM

Clearly sir you are a fool. Just wait until your walking your prisoner from the street to the station and some shit goes down. You don't think the department will ask why didn't you use the sally port? They will put it all on you. If it's there use it. I know you are probally the baddeast P.O. on the dept. In these times its' all about safety and using common sense. So pull your head out of your ass tough guy and make sure you go home the same way you came in. We in 15 use the sally port old timers as well. Trust me change is not scarey you'll be O.K.

"OEMC will argue with you when you're trying to report a fire, but this s__t goes right out on the air like it was real or something."

Why is that? I called in a car fire in front of a vacant lot, gave them intersection and xx00 block, but no street number as there wasn't one etched into the grass or curb (ha!). They wanted to argue with me about the street number, but finally put me through to fire dept., which of course knew the intersection and proceeded to rapidly put out the fire.

Always some argumentative woman operating on the base assumption that you're doing something wrong. "Yeah, it's over by the intersection of A and B Streets. You can't miss it. It's the only burning car there." WHOOMP! in the background. "Uh, look, the gas tank just went. Call NASA, maybe they can spot it from space for you..."

To everyone on here complaining that your time due and furloughs will suffer because we are in a RAP all the time...

WHO THE FUCK CARES??

You signed up to be the police. Go do that, enjoy your days that you can take off and the furlough that you selected and then come back and deal with the fact that the number 1 issue we are dealing with is officer safety.

I am all about elective time due, getting the furlo I want and getting it extended as long as I can, but we have to bite the bullet right now and stick together. At least until they hire, oh, I don't know, another 2000 coppers.

This goes beyond the 2 hr limit. If I'm working 3rd Watch can I start at 1200 hrs Commander KB? Oh yea I forgot this one. Since veterans day, 11Nov10 the front office staff and former CAPS staff worked late into the night to prepare for the move into the new building, every night untill 22Nov10..........also they walked out of 023 after watch bids around 2030 hrs, (I wonder what thier OT slips will reflect) oh and they have to repick watch bids tomorrow because the DC screwed up and tried to save all her former CAPS people. Stay tuned SCC, stay tuned...

"011 USED to be one hell of a busy lockup; not anymore. I've been in 011 many times, to find that NONE of the interview rooms were being being used to process any prisoners. The slowdown within the CPD has affected 011 too."

I work the 011 lockup everyday. It's still busy my friend. Not as much as it used to be, but don't be fooled by the sometimes empty interview rooms. Take a look at the lockup que on the computer on any given day. On days, it empties out in the morning when every felony arrest is shipped to county, only to fill back up again by 2nd watch the next day. Regardless, there should always be more than 2 officers/detention aides working in the lockup. Too many things can and do go wrong. When they see there are only 2 of us, they are much more willing to challenge us. They are a little more intimidated by a group of 4. The people being brought back there have nothing to lose. I'm just saying. Same goes for ANY lockup.
