New Stars? Again?

Report coming in from downtown that if you go to get your star repaired, you're told that you have the option of waiting for your "new star" that will be issued in the first quarter of next year.

We didn't realize the Department had so much money lying around that they can afford to buy an entire new run of stars. Of course, looking at the condition of many of the currently issued stars, you can see where someone pocketed saved a bunch of money using the cheapest stamped metal alloy known to mankind along with tempera paint for the detail work.

Are these supposed to be the same 2002 design?

Is Meyer and Wenthe still in business? Old-line downtown manufacturing firm, great craftsmen, used to make the nice old stars. Maybe the loss of this contract killed them? S__t probably banged out in China today.

I find this hard to belive. I would welcome a new star these things we have now look so unprofessional and appear to have been bought them from a dime store counter. The design prior was an elegant piece of jewelry. I would love to have it back.

All the paint on the letters and numbers on my button have popped out. The water also seems to have disappeared. Can't we just melt the acrylic encasement on our old badges and use them. They were by far the best badge CPD has ever had. Wonder which connected hack got the contract for the current iteration of crapola!

Thats great news. Our currently issued star was a very poor design with the majority of officer's having the lettering and numbering fall off in its short time of use. It's about time, officers look very unprofessional with that star pinned on our uniforms looking like it was just dragged behind the squad car for ten miles.

Off topic but needs to be addressed by the new FOP president and his or her ticket!

We have many Stripped Officers at call back , erps, leads desk, extradition and other units who have been POW's for years and their investigations are going no where and yet the current FOP powers that be do nothing to get them back to the street. At a time when we are low in man power why can't FOP tell IPRA OR IAD to get these people back to work. If stripped officers have no criminal charges and allegations which are going no where they need to be out here on the streets with the rest of us who need them to back us up. Some officers have been stripped for 6 years. The FOP should be saying something for these POW's. Its a waste to have them behind a desk when they could be on the streets. Someone be step up at FOP. We need new leadership at FOP for this issue. I would say we are down close to 3 thousand officers and we need them back.

P.O. Michael SMITH AND a P.O. Brian THOMPSON have been promoted to Commanders of Unit 543 - Special Police Services.

IT seems Patrolman SAM ROTI who currently is the Commander is age 57 and has 29 years on the job so perhaps he is retiring?

HOWEVER why in the HELL do you need 2Commanders in this unit????

OT - The city should stop looking at replacing our Stars and start worrying about our pensions. Article in the tribune does not make me confident that our pensions are going to be there or at least have some of benefits promised to us when we do retire. It’s nice that Jag off mayor decides to retire after he places the city in a financial mess that’s comparable to California….what an ass hat! Where is all the money from the Skyway and parking meter sales? The revenue he is collecting from the airport taxes? Why are the city pensions so underfunded? These are the questions our unions should be raising!

Get rid of the colored rings.
If there has to be colored rings they should match the rank.
The blue rings on sergeants stars should be on the PO and detectives stars. White rings for Sgt and Lt. gold for captain.

But tge last iteration star was the best!

I'll answer a few of the questions.
Meyer&Wenthe were purchased by another company years ago, and was purchased again and is now the Smith&Warren Badge Company and has a very good reputation, so they don't need the nonsense with city hall.
The current company was blacklisted for selling our badges ( and many others ) without authority. Some of the older guys will remember our badges being sold over the internet ). This also involved a suburban badge dealer who buys lots of drinks for the pols and chiefs. There was one local dealer who complained, they shut him out, and IAD also had some fun harrassing him.
Needless to say, these badge are very cheaply made, are made of very poor quality material, and have never met the specifications set forth by the department.
This company, even though banned, was awarded the contract ( which excluded local Chicagoans ) directly from city hall.
By the way, Ted Kennedy ( D-Mass ) was the guy who called on behalf of this Mass company.
Nothing like Democrats sticking together!

Totally agree. THose stripped P.O.s are trained and the city has invested money into them as first responders. They are sitting there collecting there money and doing nothing. Fiscally speaking it is a no brainer to get them back to work. We are down in man power and these people have the experience to work the streets and just wasting time and taxpayers money. IPRA and IAD need to stop sitting on b.s cases and allegations. We have few in the academy right now and not many hires coming on so get these people back or move to terminate them.

Did a little digging. Sadly, like so many other fine firms, once part of the beating heart of the city, Meyer and Wenthe -- the manufacturer of the previous-style Chicago police stars everyone liked so much -- is gone.

It is uncertain whether the original tooling -- made with so much care and "feine Handwerk" by the old German-trained die sinkers and engravers -- still exists.

"Meyer & Wenthe office and factory were located at 24 to 30 S. Jefferson St. A Loop office was at 108 N. Dearborn St. and on the west side at 28 S. Jefferson St. The 1925 catalog is 216 pages long and not only were police badges made there but streetcar tokens, endless stamped metal objects, and Herman Wenthe invented the pocket notary seal.

"The company was last at 7220 W. Wilson in Harwood Heights, Illinois. They were bought out in the mid 80's by Everson Ross in Spring Valley, NY.

"When they moved from here, most of the custom dies were damaged or lost in transit. Most of the Chicago-style badges were lost at this time, and the new owners didn't care.

"Smith & Warren, acquired Everson Ross in 1999. Everson Ross did acquire Meyer & Wenthe in the 1980's. Many of the dies and tooling were preserved and are still located in our factory in White Plains, NY. Any inquiries with respect to traditional Meyer & Wenthe designs can be directed to us via our web-site at www.smithwarren.com."

If it were decided to do so, the old-style stars could still be made; it's just unfortunate that they wouldn't be made right here in Chicago, like so many other things used to be -- Admiral, Motorola, Zenith and ten thousand other companies, all gone.

We used to have one hell of an economy going here.

The last time I took a commuter train out of the Loop, there was very obviously not one single person on the whole train who worked with their hands. All Yuppies with laptops and plastic cocktail glasses, loudly recounting their real estate exploits into a cell phone for everyone else to suffer through...

Years ago, on my old beat 18-21, when it was a rust belt factory district not a art colony and yuppie playground, we had the C.H. Hanson Company. They used to make stars and badges for police and fire departments all over the world. The place was practically a museum and could have made the badges for the Wyatt Earp and Pat Garret.

They didn’t make ours, the city did not want a local company to make our stars and shields but C.H. Hanson would fix our star and shields while we wait there.

On North Ave. around Clybourn in the 18th we had the Swisscraft Embroidery Company. A real old time factory with gray creaky floors and the smell of machine oil and cotton dust in the air.

The place was filled with what are called Jacquard looms which were right out of the Industrial Revolution. They were as big as trucks with endless spools of brightly colored threads. They were controlled by a series of cardboard punch cards which told the looms which needle to make a stitch and when. The antique system was the forerunner of the binary computer system. This place was also a museum having created colorful patches for police and fire departments, for the military, car and motorcycle clubs and everything else imaginable. If it could be drawn, they could embroidery into art.

When were changed our patches in 1985, I used to buy bundles of our new ones there and when I traveled cross country on my motorcycle would trade patches at police station along the way. I met a lot of interesting cops that way, useful information, good places to eat, put up for the night. Always told I should be carrying a gun, (I was). The respect for the Chicago Police was universal, it still is but now they ask, "Y'all got that crazy mayor?"

Stay safe, it's a shame that the economic policies of the city, states and national government have chased small companies out of here. They made for a more interesting city.

The cap shields that we had up until recently went back to to 1880's Keystone Cops helmets. It was possible for someone to really to be wearing their great-great grandfather's cap shield.

I suppose the new ones ae better, the numbers don't fall out.

Sorry to burst your bubble "big city dick" but you are and never have been any better than the so-called lowly "youth officers," you like to demean. An assignment in Violent or Property wasn't based on your amazing investigative abilities but by phone call, so get over yourself. If you want to blame something or someone for the low clearance rate try the following: huge case loads due to no dets hired in over three years, witnesses rights, cameras in rooms, new 48 rule, and if that's not enough, try loooking in the mirror...

Look at really old CPD photos.

The cap shields that we had up until recently went back to to 1880's Keystone Cops helmets. It was possible for someone to really to be wearing their great-great grandfather's cap shield.

I suppose the new ones are better, the numbers don't fall out.

--------

The pre-2002 Patrolman's hat shield and Sergeant's hat-shield goes back to 1907.
You can tell by looking at old dated photos of Chicago Police officers.
That WAS one of the oldest remaining parts of our uniform.

The gold colored buttons on our jackets and reefer go back pretty far too.
Perhaps back into the 19th century.

Maybe someone knows ??

I read the Meeks thing and what I saw, pertained to the police on two levels:

1) He would not rehire J-Fled and
2) He would seek input from FOP on a new boss.

I didn't see anything touting Meeks for mayor, in fact, to the contrary, it said I know he couldn't win...

The only reason Meeks is in the race is to cut a deal with somebody to drop out... either the other black candidates and their backers or Rahm.

BTW, thought I heard that Rahm's residency issue could not be challenged until he filed his petitions with a local address on it... yet no one has challenged yet.

J-Fled did not pick the current stars, they were the brain-child of fat-ass Phil [Cline], the same doofis who made all the merit hack youth officers into "Detectives" on command of the Midget Emperor. And they wonder why the clearup rate of CPD is so low ?

11/17/2010 11:36:00 AM

Not true. Cline became superintendent in November of 2003, long after they started fielding those things. Terry Hillard commissioned three companies to design that star, disliked all three submissions, and then personally designed the current star. He is quite proud of the design. Obviously that during the end of the days when the information age hadn't overwhelmed the job. Terry was free to doodle in his office all day and no one cared that we had 600 to 700 murders.

___________________________________

Hmmm, where do I begin with your obviously ignorant statements?

First, I was not a merit "hack." I scored higher on the test than many "Detectives" that got made after me.

I was not offered Detective because the Detective spots had already been taken by those that scored higher than me (it's obviously a more desired spot).

I chose not to waive an offer in hand and risk regretting it later. I could have waived it and then wait to be made a Super Sleuth. I wouldn't be considered a merit Hack by you then. But alas, I didn't and got to be a lowly Youth Investigator (now a Detective, funny how that worked out).

Second your "merit hack" "Detectives" in SVU have nothing to do with the low clearance rates, slick.

You see, their clearance rates are actually higher than the rock 'em sock 'em go get 'em Detectives that you refer to. Most of their cases have named offenders; therefore, their cases tend to be solved at a higher rate than your run of the mill Dick Tracy types.

The title change has nothing to do with the low clearance rate. There are many issues having to do with the clearance rate dropping, which I will assume you know about because you obviously know everything.

Third, most merit hacks used their clout to get made a gum shoe NOT a diaper dick. Youth Officer seemed to be a less sought after position (based upon many waiving it once the joined tests took place) and Detective was historically much more sought after. Hence, what do you think those with the most juice chose to be...that's right Sherlock, Detective.

Finally, the hack youth officers and detectives of yore have retired already.

No go back to smoking your crack pipe.

Signed,

The Lowly Youth Officer.

In regards to the pension issue we are !@#$%^. That article is accurate and the 4% is the correct return the fund has been earning.

Another caveat is be carefull with the mutual funds in the deferred comp. They are always pushing the funds instead of the fixed option, look at the long term returns of the funds vs. fixed not much difference but much more risk with the mutual funds. They play games with the literature too, always changing the funds to try and get ones that show a higher 10 yr return but many of those weren't available to us 10 yrs ago. The last column says (since inception) with a high return but the inception may have been 4 years ago. IMO you want to know your deferred will be there don't gamble with it.You are better off putting some side money into individual stocks.

Sure can, because you're the police 24 hours a day, that's why you can NEVER be intoxicated. Read your Rules and Regulations. They can slam anyone they wanted to "get" any time they wanted to with those ambiguous rules. Just wait, it'll happen more and more, because they don't care - they want to keep getting more with less, and never realize the Dutch Boy failed in the end, and the damned dam broke.

For the past 3-4 years, this city has been "ostrich-sized" as long as they bury it in the sand, it really isn't happening. So what's to complain about??

Do you really know how many citizens of CHICAGO truly believe crime is down, more than you'd care to think.

Perhaps some savvy reporter can analyze the ratio of Chicago citizens vs protection of Police at all hours of the day. Would have been enough to scare Mother Theresa herself into buying a gun!

But just like with the reporter requesting freedom of information reports regarding all crimes involving guns, there will never be any such TRUE numbers released, so this report would never come to fruition. But it would be an interesting read. ???

He likes it and sends it to another of our friends in Key Largo, Florida who sends it to my son, who lives with his wife on Guam; he in turn sends it back to me here in Chicago in time for me to return to work with my new knee joint.

What then?

HERE'S ANOTHER FLASH

We are supposed to get thousands of Personal Protective C.P.R. Masks. This is for doing mouth breathing during Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation.

The American Medical Association and the Red Cross now says the mouth to mouth isn't needed, just do the chest compressions.

So somebody had to dump all those masks somewhere.

The word from 35th is that the new stars will be in the shape of a bulls eye. Plus all name tags will now include the Phone number to IPRA.

Just to fuel the paranoia...

"I don't think they can lawfully track us off duty."

They're not tracking YOU, they're tracking City property. If it happens to be in your back pocket, well...

Some months ago I was asking about a problem with my star and I was told we were getting new ones them. I asked them if they would be "chipped" and was told no.

I don't think this would be an officer safety enhansement. More likely it would be a way to tell if you were in a police facility or not. Were you late to roll call or in the lock-up when something happened.

Listen u paranoid goofs. They can't get the GPS right and working in the cars they for sure could not afford a GPS in a police star.An in some of the post's they are saying they will tract you off duty. That's real easy. LEAVE IT AT WORK like the job. LEAVE IT THERE.
