The "Anti J-Fled"

  • Most people less than a week away from retirement after 37 years on the job might consider taking it easy on those last few days.

But not Chicago Police Capt. Thomas McMahon.

Police said the off-duty 37-year department veteran, set to retire on Monday from the Far South Side's Calumet District, chased down a gunman late Friday morning after seeing the suspect fleeing the scene of a shooting that killed 20-year-old Cordaro Nash.

The gunman then fired on McMahon, who was not wounded although his car was struck.
An almost retired copper, a captain for pete's sake, near a fatal shooting, giving chase (not running away) by moving toward gunfire and actually being shot at for his troubles.

It's almost like he's J-Fled's complete opposite! If Capt. McMahon and J-Fled actually met and shook hands, would it be like matter and anti-matter coming into contact and exploding? We'd hope not - the captain deserves better.

Then again, you are a credit to the finest traditions of the CPD and not a yellow-bellied coward like our despicable "leader".

one of the articles, not sure if the suntimes or tribune, stated that the captain did not have his gun. it's a privilege for us to carry off duty, so why not carry. i hate doing the "what if" but what if the assailants had approached the captain and narrowed in on him? we would of been talking about another honors funeral because he would of been unable to repel the attack. what he did is commendable but he's dumb for not carrying. had shit hit the fan, he would of been fucked without a vest, radio, piece, etc.

Good Luck to Captain McMahon on your retirement and thanks for your thrity-seven years of service. I don't know the man but I am sure he is an excellent example of what we are proud to call "Old School Police."

This is a direct opposite to the POS captain we now have in 010 who claims he now has 40 years on the job and he is only here to make everyone miserable. A goof who got 30 days for something that today would get him 30 years, fired, sued and on the Maury Show.

Memo to weis: That is how a police officer responds to the sound of gunfire in the city. Note the captain was unarmed, not also how the captain didn't mumble "gotta run" before cowardly running away.

But we already know of the FBI's tendency to run away from gunfights. And especially your own aversion to being near the action weis.

Memo to ladner: Rethink that "not everything is solved by an arrest" statement. Find a more suitable line of work, like being a gopher for a rabble rousing columnist on the Sun-Times.

I wonder if this is the type of Officer tracey ladner meant when she used the term "rough and tumble" copper? The kind she said has no place on the CPD that she envisions? The kind of policeman she tried to portray as a knuckle dragging nethanderal? The kind of policeman that no matter what rank he holds, no matter what the duty status, no matter what age or how many years service he has, still, unlike the current comand staff, runs TOWARDS the sound of gunfire and tries to make the arrest?

Nice job Captain McMahon. I thank you and all the right thinking people of Chicago thank you. It's nice to see or hear about a REAL policemen doing what REAL policemen do. Judy Weis and his command staff of misfits would also thank you if they had a clue as to what a real policemen is or does. Enjoy your retirement. You deserve it. Thanks for making us proud.

Watching him work the room at a meeting and fawning over the power-players was positively disgusting. He kissed loads and loads of ass as a PO and a Gang Specialist for 23 years and then his efforts must have matured or he must have smooched just the right cheeks because he rose from there to Captain within the last 14years on the job. He is now blessed with a 90K yearly pension and paid medical benefits, which is not too bad of a return for loads of ass-kissing, but his and the wife's insane loyalty and commitment to Pullman is just fucking unnatural. They believe Pullman is a utopia, which is probably why he travels unarmed. Foolish.

Also the family of the shooter just got a CR# on McMahon for endangering their son's life by chasing him. And he recieved another CR# from the family of the shooting victim for not immediately rendering aid at the scene and instead choosing to go on a high-speed car chase endangering numerous innocent residents while their honor student son died on the street. Looks like that retirement is gonna have to wait a few years until these CR#'s are cleared up!!

It must be agreed upon by all present that Capt. McMahon possesses instincts that are absent in Supt. Weis -- one of which is called "bravery."

I'm sure he would have liked to "go get his gear" first, too, but he put his own best interests behind him and acted as best he could at the moment -- alone, unarmed, and under fire -- to try to protect the public from an armed killer.

Found another great EB article on the internet.

First, EB admits he does not have a masters, yet all cpd captains must have a masters degree. Plus EB spells the word course - "c-o-a-r-s-e".

Second, EB claims he has seen more homicides than probably heroic Capt. McMahon!

This was found in Dr. Ross's web advertising "Violence in Our Community - 2011 Atlanta Conference Presenters" include:

Mr. Ernest Brown, Chief of Organized Crime, Chicago Police Department

Brown has been a member of the Chicago Police Department since 1982. He currently serves as Chief of the Organized Crime Division with the Chicago Police Department in Chicago, Illinois. Chief Brown holds a Bachelor’s Degree and has completed coarse work toward a master's degree. He has also served in the Narcotics Section, Internal Affairs Division, Gang Intelligence Unit, Detective Division, the Education and Training Division, Commander of City-Wide Public Housing, Commander of the 003rd District, and Assistant Deputy Superintendent. A veteran of the United States Air Force, Chief Brown served honorably and was discharged in 1974.

Throughout most of his career, he has been in operational units that have placed him in positions to witness violence within an urban setting. Having responded to over 400 homicide scenes, Chief Brown has exceptional insight regarding the negative impact of violence on the community, its numerous causal relationships and a litany of responses to violence. He has come to recognize the importance of developing partnerships and the significant impact that those partnerships have in the ability to reduce violence. He has been recognized by the community for his leadership skills and by the Chicago Police Department for heroism and innovation in the field of law enforcement.

Sounds like another Irish Captain, Joe McCarthy who used to lead tact teams in search warrants and used to drive around and back up his officers on Traffic stops and other jobs.

Bosses like this are a dying breed, good luck Captain!!!!

Craig Swistowicz's trial has been going onfor three days. The prosecutions main witness, a DEA Agent, now assigned to SanPalo Brizel, admitted on the stand that he lied to the OIG investigator (a felony), that he committed Obstruction of Justice (another felony) and that he was lieing on the witness stand. The prosecution rested. The defense asked for a directed verdict but Judge Lefkow refused. Defense starts Monday, 219 So. Dearborn. Rm 1925. Craig needs as much support as he can get. Be there if you can!!!!

Kind of knocked me out of the box.

I know a lot of us trash the Capts as political hacks and merit appointees, but some of those Capts were the real police in their day - Capt McMahon, Capt Walsh in 008 who while off duty had a running gun battle with armed offdenders in Ford City and Capt Carroll who while off duty and on the day he was promoted to Capt ran down an armed offender who just killed a young girl !!! Yet we get fools like FLores, Mealer and Carruthers who are made Cmdrs..... WTF.......

Are there any other Capts I missed who were and still are the real police who continue to get screwed over. No, I don't mean Capt Dillon, Capt Bay, and some other clowns.....

However, normally, he's a suck-ass of epic size. He'll toss your blue shirt under the 111th st bus in a second. He talks a great game; he'll tell you of how great of a Policeman, Gang Crime Spec. he was... but thats what it was; all talk...

TM is also involved in the University of Illinois admission scandal. Mr Capt was the high ranking police official who received political favors for the admission of his son to the U of I. Double standard of discipline. Also the mans wife was interviewed twice by the FBI about misuse of federal grants in Pullman. His wife is not an attorney but a patronage hearing officer for the Secretary of State.Hello politics.

He only looks out for the female p/os, always has a female sgt driving him when he goes out in the field. If youre a woman your in.

Congratulations on great police work, excellent work considering the political pedigree,.I hope he lives a long life and collects for another 37 years.

First, EB admits he does not have a masters, yet all cpd captains must have a masters degree. Plus EB spells the word course - "c-o-a-r-s-e".
--------
Captains are not required to have a masters. Just a bachelors.

"Why hasn't Dave S. been offered the job of Supt.???"

Because that would make sense. Snethen is respected by everyone who knows him. He knows this job inside out and doesn't play bullshit games. That means that the powers that be would never hire him, because he wouldn't be the mayor's lap dog like J-Fled is.

B) kill more than a few bad-guys along the way

Glad he's leaving, now him and the wife can tell everyone just how great Pullman is.

Do not know if this is a personal issue or not, but I could not disagree more! I worked with Tom McMahon in Area 1, and he was one of the sharpest cops I ever met on this job! Great job Tom! Enjoy your retirement! Hope you hit them up for about thirty years!

'hey SCC here is another article about Masters...this one has a nice picture of him with his star on!!

http://www.oychicago.com/article.aspx?id=6300'

I can tell you without even reading this article that it will tell you nothing about this man. None of the articles published about the infamous 3M in these obscure publications will. They are written by non-reporters who are specifically trained NOT to ask any deep questions, such as:

1) Why in the hell would J-Fled throw his own hand picked guy under the bus and move such a goof into that position? Where was the pressure coming from?

2) What exactly were your duties in your brief stint in the military?

3) How did you go from an 'executive assistant to the Mayor for public safety' (with a Harvard Law degree) to 'Chief of Staff' for the CPD? Quite a leap from attending a few beat meetings.

4) And of course, no reporter as of today's date has apparently had the chutzpah to ask little 3M about his ability to carry a weapon, or how he came about his 'sworn' credentials. And isn't it a little strange that no interviews with 3M have been printed in either of the two major papers here? I guess the old saying is true: "when you've got a lot to hide, stay in hiding."

Capt. Morgan is the best Captain I ever worked for. I was once out of ice cubes and had to walk 2 blocks to the nearest 711. When I returned he took no offense that I did not want to drink him straight. When I fell off my bar stool he gave me time on the end. Did not even have to burn a slip!

Captain Trahanas, who set the bar high in domestic stupidity, slashing tires, making threatening phone calls and making fun of a PO's mentally handicapped daughter.

Sorry to go off topic- but what's the story on 002's new Tact Lt - Mark Moore? Ray Doherty got shafted on this one!

11/14/2010 04:02:00 PM

What do you mean got shafted ? Ray took a test for tact lt or something?
Let me tell you something asshat. As much of a pain in the ass know it all Moore is, he's still more qualified for that spot then Ray is.
Moore was a tact sgt in 006 and housing, and was a narcotics sgt. Dougherty worked 002 tact and hid behind a desk in 004 until he made lt and went to 006 where I heard he continued hiding behind a desk until one of his old partners had him pulled to 002.
I 'm no fan of either, but experience wise Moore has the edge. So quit crying DJ. If they were the same ethnicity it wouldnt be an issue.

Speaking of the new Capt. in 010 formerly from 019 (Capt. /chief A), thank god he is on 1st watch now. The 2nd watch couldn’t stand the 30min. sermon he gave his first roll call in 010. Now midnights has to suffer through the "war stories" of I've been the police here and there and done this and that. No body cares, do your job and stop managing everything. 010 was doing just fine without you.

010-2nd watch

mean like when you let people mf you guys on the street and in you station at the desk calling you out and you dont even utter a word just sit there looking down? and when i had enough and told them to STFU or else and your WC tells me "we" dont do that here officer...but when Capt A came in and told them To get out and when they keep running their mouths he called for me and I escorted them out?..you mean like that 2nd watch? how come there are no patrols north of 22nd street..mean like that?..want more? To all you McMahon bashers...
especially the A2 crew-the WORST detectives in the city with the LOWEST clearance rate citywide.
Up yours.
Capt McMahon has always acted professionally and treated workers decently. If you're a screw up or dog ( and there's an abundance of both in both area 2 and 005) he will do his job .
So what if he likes Pullman. You act like that's a bad thing, having pride in your neighborhood. Pullman is probably the best neighborhood in 005, if not Area 2. Beverly and Mt. Greenwood are always bragging on their neighborhoods, why not Pullman? The houses are small but it's a decent neighborhood.
Find something else to bash McMahon over-those issues are non issues.
Congrats and good luck on your retirement boss, you earned it.Too bad you didn't get a gold star but it seems real leaders, under Weis, Masters and Brown will never get one.

Years ago captains were rushing to get their bachelor's degrees. Before that you only needed 2 years (60 hours) to be a captain or lieutenant. At the time, those who were already a captain or lieutenant were grandfathered in, if they didn't have the education. The city gave new and future captains and lieutenants 5 years to get their degree before the requirement kicked-in. That's why everyone was scrambling to get their degrees.

The requirement today is still a bachelor's. The exempts on the other hand have no educational requirement. Odd eh????
