TASER Training Restarted

Evidently, last week the Department began re-training, new training and qualifications for Officers to carry TASERs once again. We assume that means the equipment is on the way and will be available for deployment in the near future.

A word of caution - we've been on the scene of TASER deployments. They fail on occasion. It is not a substitute for Lethal Force and if it fails, you should be prepared for a fight. Be aware of where your backup is and how far they have to come to assist you.

To add to that... be especially careful if you are one of those school officers in a zoo like Marshall, Manley, Crane, etc. The herd may jump on you if you use it without adequate back-up.

The .380 is not a good weapon. The bullet weighs around 90 grains. In my opinion a 9mm is also no damn good. You can carry a Glock .45 on or off duty, why settle for a little .380 pimp gun? That gun will get you killed if you need to pull it some day.

It is only a weapon of last resort for concealment purposes for those working undercover.

To use it effectively one must train constantly and be damn sure of where those teensy tiny bullets are placed. Most CPD do not train anywhere near enough to be effective with a .380

I don't work in narcotics and don't even know anyone in narcotics but let's remember some things before you start bashing "buy officers." These guys, clout or not, are out there with no vest, no radio, no duty gun, and back up that is blocks away doing business with the savages that kill people because it's "just business." And if they do have a gun, it's a tiny .380 shoved in the pocket of their baggy sagging jeans. Are you willing to do that kind of work? And they can only carry them when they're doing buys, not while off duty. Read the order.

Who cares about .380s ? A .38 snub throws more energy due to the heavier bullet weight. With the heavy firepower carried by todays jagoffs, why go with a minimal round like the .380 ? You would be much better off with a cut down version of your service weapon.

Remember this story on FOX a couple of months ago?

Weis Worried About Police Retirement Shortage

Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis says the city needs to be prepared for the potential retirements of up to 1,000 officers next year.

Weis says he's "extremely nervous" about the number of officers who may leave the department once a new contract is signed in 2010.

About 1,000 officers are eligible to retire next year, and police officials say it's impossible to predict how many will step down.

The police department has 600 vacancies and is 2,000 officers short of its authorized strength.

Still, Weis says he's confident the city would be protected. He says there are hundreds of people in the pipeline to replace retiring officers.

It takes about six months for new hires to graduate from the police academy and start street patrol.

WEIS as well as the rest of us should really be worried if what I heard from someone down in personnel is really true. That the number of retirees for this year will be a lot closer to 1200 once the Sgt's contract is ratified (because of the new 55 and out deal with the health insurance).

So let's do an approximation of #'s
This is only what we know about and not including secret squirrel units.

9,450 P.O.'s(9161 code only)
-1,200 Anticipating leaving
-2,000 Short of authrz'd strength
- 600 Vacancies already
- 600 OCD Division
- 600 House Mouses at HQ
- 400 Gang Enforcement Section
- 300 MSF/TRU (approximate)
- 200 Commnty. Policing (citywide)
- 100 Area SAT teams (days/nites)
- 160 Mass Transit
- 150 Avg 2 PO's per watch X 25
- 50 Area Gun Teams
- 20 PSN Gun Teams (fed funded)
- 50 Time Keepers (dist/units)
+ 50 Recruits in academy now
_______
2,970 Patrol Officers left

2970/25 Districts
=118 P.O.'s per District

118/3 Watches
= 39.6 P.O.'s per watch

39.6/3 Sectors (average)
=13.2 P.O.'s per sector

13.2/9 Average of 3 beats per sector
=1.4 P.O. per watch car

That's right boys and girls, that's approximately every beat car in the city to be a 1 man car in the very near future unless something is done. I know many of us are working 1 man cars everyday as it is but it will become much worse unless they hire people very very soon.

For those of you that will be bitching about the numbers they are only APPROXIMATE figures for beat cars only. Does not include manning rapid response, traffic, foot, hospital, park, school or whatever else districts have.

Hmmmm? Perhaps we should make the right friends and invent Box Chevy Phantom Urban Combat Spray? A concentrate of an agent that causes cramping & involuntary bowel movement, wasabi, hot mustard, OC, indelible pink & yellow dye and the stench of that dead body plant that will last for 72 hours!

Why would anyone want to carry a taser? It's another step that you must use (if you carry one) before using your firearm, even un-holstering your firearm. If you carry a taser and don't use it before your firearm you will be sued for not using it first. You as a law enforcement officer are allowed one upsmanship. that means that if offender has his hands as a weapon you are allowed the use your nightstick / asp , if he has a weapon you can can use your gun. not your F*&%ing taser, that thing would only piss him off, and if you don't use it first YOU WILL BE SUED!

Florida has non compliant Taser use policy.. (Thank God for Florida!)..........
Example: You have a non-armed offender, You say STOP POLICE! he doesn't---you Tase him......... this is what the taser was designed for not replacement of nightstick/asp or firearm...
Battery to P.O....... DOWN
Officers injured......DOWN
Municipalities sued...DOWN
Officers sued.........DOWN
Officers taken to Hospital..DOWN
Their tasers saved injury and dollars...because they have the non compliant policy.

Please people get smarter and don't get hurt, loose your savings, house, deferred comp ect..
Hey Jody, do you like these apples!

I know an Oak Park officer that carried a .380 years ago. He only chambered 38s in it. However, he was big enough to scare the living hell out of anyone but the biggest NFL player, and he had the bad attitude to match. He got in trouble for shooting a raccoon that had invaded a trash can; his watch commander came and offered him leave for killing someone before he found out that the scuttlebutt about an "officer-involved" shooting was a joke.

I'd rather use an 870 if I was acting as a police officer; I doubt that there would be many survivors. I also happen to be a very good shot with an 870.

As we recall there was a quote attributed to an old school Texas Ranger... "It's your hide, how much do you value it?"

We value our hide enough to carry at a minimum our five shot hammer less .38 snub with very HEAVY LOADED (1000+ fps) 158gr. gas checked soft lead hollow points.

Other than that we are firm believers in the .357 Magnum (loaded to 1935 FBI spec.) and .45 auto +p fired right through an offender's front teeth (either from the front or rear) to get his/her/it's attention.

Of course it's the offender's choice that it turns out that way or not.

A .380 auto pistol will NOT chamber a .38 special round, the .38 cartridge is too large.

The diameter of the bore is .380 as the name implies. A .38 is .357 in diameter, the cartridge is different and the chamber is different. Will not fit.

Besides, the .380 is a shit cartridge, too small and underpowered.

Get a .45.

Like Mike or not, he is fighting a fight for things which directly affect our lives, which if not fought for, will go down the toilet.

Is Hamilton still the C.O of the Policy Group, or not?
I've seen him in his black BDUs apparently in "SWAT School,' but is he double dipping? Also, is he still drawing Lts. pay as a "legal officer?' Hopefully, someone in the know down there at 3510 will be able to put the 411 down here, but I doubt it. No one from Headquarters can or will even say if MM is a newly SWORN officer or still a civilian with a gun. Can't seem to get the truth about anything from headquarters these days.

Re: .380 Pistols

2/22/2010 12:20:00 AM

Amen to that brother. I have seen the .45 cal demonstrate it's worth through the offender's teeth exactly as described and it cures recidivism 100%.

.380/9mm = .355 slug
.38/.357 = .357 slug

Bore diameter differs by manufacturer .001-.002 larger than the slug.

I'd rather use an 870 if I was acting as a police officer; I doubt that there would be many survivors. I also happen to be a very good shot with an 870.

2/21/2010 10:58:00 PM

LMFAO Ray Charles was a good shot with an 870....What the FUCK is that?
No really.
Class time kiddies:

the .40 cal s&w round in EITHER 165 or 185 grain is the middle ground for LE and private use. Lets put it this way, it has the ability to pass thru one nylon coat and three CPD leather Jackets at a distance of 20 feet AND EXIT the backside. There are several dash cam videos of the hallowed .45 ACP striking an offender in the abdomen and the offender STILL STANDING. Remember, grain and velocity.9mm is too small and too fast,45 is too fat and too slow,(image of old wagon guy running JOKING)40 may just be the right round and SEVERAL manufacturers offer HI CAPACITY handguns in this caliber. The recoil is nominal so even the feeble desk ladies can fire it without too much ado. AND a 40 cal WILL penetrate a floor safe at a distance of 15 feet. (field tested in the basement of soldier field in 1994) a 45 however will flatten out and NOT penetrate. Just saying.

All you tackleberrys out there talking about the .380 need to chill. These type of handguns are suppose to be oh shit guns. Did everyone forget about the new weapon order that came out this year you can't buy a .38 anymore unless it's a replacement for the one you have. So these .380's are ideal for a backup gun, sure the round is small but quess what I bet they hurt like a son of a bitch if you get shot by it. I don't own a .38 but if they approve these .380's i'll be sure to get one.

A tip of the ole chapeau to the poster (2/21/2010 06:31:00 PM)who did the math regarding manpower in the districts. (I can't believe there is someone on the job geekier than me, but I digress).

To take his/her analysis further, imagine a shooting. Paper car, scene car, a car to go to the hospital, and various and sundry cars to handle the mass of people wailing about their injured offspring. Maybe 3-6 cars down for a good amount of time. In a district with 15 beat cars, that's almost half the district tied up with one event.

I haven't been on for an eternity, but in the 90's a certain west side district had nearly all the rapids manned, and all "specialty cars" manned. In fact, there were two cars handling Madison. Now there are none. Why? There aren't any bodies. No rapids available at all, and certainly no specialty cars.

But not to worry. I heard that reverse pod missions, reverse TRP missions, and other secret systems and techniques (sp) devised by the newer DC, will bring order out of the chaos.

Wow, I really rambled on that one.

Be careful, and safe out there boys and girls, and as my old partner used to say, "we handle all business from the car".

To the officer asking about parking at 555 West Harrison, you would be better off taking the blue line and just walking one block to the court. If you really need to park, then park behind the academy and then walk a good 15 to 20 minutes to 555 West Harrison.

To those worrying about tasers, don't, if deadly force is warranted, ie. the offender is brandishing any kind of weapon, do not reach for the taser, taser isn't a tool in lieu of deadly force, taser is for resisters, unarmed offenders etc. you will be sued for deadly force encounters rest assured, not using the taser first won't be the reason, the allegation of unlawful death will be..

Anyone here the rumor about allowing us to carry the .380's like all of the clout boys in narcotics?

Or do I have to pay Ginger some money to be one of Leo's workers to get a good, approved, off duty weapon?

2/21/2010 12:55:00 AM<<<

A .380, no matter how small, how light is still a .380. It a low powered noise maker that's better than nothing, better than a .25 Auto. If you are going to carry something like that get a sub-compact Glock or other semi-auto in 9mm or even .40cal. It's sllighly larger and now you have some real knock down power.

Or, get an airweight .38 snub, more reliable than any semi-auto.

Stay safe, what ever you carry, practice, practice, practice.

OT there is an order already written to allow ALL P.O.s to carry .380s icluding Ruger, Walther, and Kel-Tec. Order is supposed to be out within a month or two. These are compact dependable backup guns. Consider getting one for duty use. Stay safe.

Fuck THAT! Off duty, I still want a gun that will provide me with REAL STOPPING POWER! I'd rather have my .38 snub than a .380.
No thanks. But I could see how an U/C buy officer would want that in a hideout weapon. Much better choices are available in concealed carry off-duty.

With all the retirements expected among the whiteshirt ranks, combined with the fact that many Sgts. simply refuse to carry them, I can see why the city is gearing up to allow the POs to carry them.
We'll face a severe shortage of supervisors on the street very soon at the rate the retirements are coming in.

What happened to all of the TASER-CAMS? I heard that the city did not pay the bill for them and they were re-poed.

With Taser, the condition of the battery is all important. The city never maintains anything they give us. Shorty will plant more flowers and buy more Bean polish rather than maintain something that will save us injury.

How low will the battery have to get before we can refuse to carry one.

Rest assured Lathrop One, you would most definitely be one of the chosen few on the "Field Testing and Development Advisory Committee." The next trick would probably involve developing a 20 ton MOAB for those deeply dug in knuckle-heads who just don't want to give it up.

4. Cabrini O Green(hi rises AND
Row houses)
5. Ikes
6. Stateway

As long as we are discussing Guns.

One of the guys I work with just got one of these expensive tactical lights to mount on his Glock. The first time he went and fired it there was a considerable amount of pitting on the Lexan lens and on the front of the barrel of the flashlight.

To prevent this, first mount the light as far behind the muzzle of the weapon as possible.

Another suggestion, especially when you go to qualify or practice. Take some clear packing tape and carefully cut a disk to fit over the lens. Then you can take almost any other king of tape, hunters camo tape or even duct tape and cover the end of the flashlight. They will absorb the sparkbites and keep you light from pitting then you can remove them later.
