Gunfight Over a Bird?

  • A man wanted in connection with the theft of a valuable macaw in Naperville fired 50 to 60 shots with an assault rifle and a handgun as Indiana authorities attempted to serve a warrant Monday, police testified in court Wednesday.

Naperville police on Tuesday confirmed that Michael Drogosz, 27, is the man believed responsible for the Jan. 19 theft of a green, 7-month-old female macaw from the Petland store on the 720 block of South Route 59, opposite the Westfield Fox Valley shopping center in Aurora.

Felony theft of a bird? The entire article is almost amusing - amusing if you discount the fact he was blazing away at the police with rifles and pistols. It's lucky no one, police or bystander, wasn't killed.

UPDATE: Whoops. Misread the gunfight location. Still, it's a bird, right? Post corrected.

FYI - The shootout occurred in the Bass Lake area in Starke County, Indiana.

Not in quiet Naperville. Just the Macaw theft was there.

According to the story, the gunfight took place in Indiana; the January theft of the Macaw was from a pet store in Naperville.

Yabbut the gunfight was out in Bass Lakes, Starke County, Indiana, about 100 miles from Naperville.

Read the article.
"That trail led to the Bass Lake area in Starke County, Ind. Starke County sheriff's Officer John Ferguson and Detective Bill Dulin said at Wednesday's hearing they went Monday on the 5100 block of East Summerhome Drive in Bass Lake to serve Drogosz with an Illinois felony warrant for the Naperville theft."

We Hoosiers put up with all the I drugged up Illinois weekenders. Our law enforcement officers serving the warrant for the Naperville authorities.

Andy and Barney always got the job done in Mayberry. Give the Starke County officer the credit due them.

I'm sure I misread your post. I've seen Macaws valued in the tens of thousands. But, more importantly...the police are safe. The reason that they were serving the warrant is immaterial to the story.

Macaws depending on the type run from $1500 to $14000..They are noisy, messy and needy..having the bird would have been punishment enough.

Cop Contest

A dispute among three kinds of cops,
CIA, FBI, LAPD:
Who can catch bad guys the quickest?
We'll set up a contest and see.

A rabbit was set loose in the trees;
"We'll get him first," they all said.
They gathered up all of their gear,
And into the forest they sped.

The CIA with informants,
Questions animals and plants on its list,
And after four months investigation,
Concludes rabbits do not exist.

The FBI searches and searches,
But can't find a single clue.
After three weeks they burn down the forest,
Killing the poor bunny, too.

The LAPD takes an hour;
Solving crimes fast is their habit.
Their perp is a badly bruised cougar,
Shouting, "Whatever you say! I'm a rabbit!"

Yeah guns don't deter bad guys!!!

Two customers displaying holstered pistols deterred an armed robbery in a Kennesaw Wafflehouse recently.

There is some debate raging in Georgia about whether people should conceal their holstered handguns while in public. Some believe that wearing handguns openly will result in a loss of the element of surprise during a criminal attack, such as an armed robbery, while others believe that wearing handguns openly deters criminal attack. For Matt Brannan and J.P. Mitchell, who carry openly as a routine, the issue is no longer academic.

Matt Brannan and J.P. Mitchell were dining in the Wafflehouse on Barrett Parkway at I-575 in Kennesaw at 4:45 in the morning recently when a scout for an armed robbery crew entered the restaurant to case it. At the time, Matt and J.P. thought he looked a little suspicious, as he was wandering around the small restaurant like he was looking for someone. Unknown to Matt and J.P., two cars full of armed robbers were parked behind the restaurant waiting for the scout's report.

The scout saw that two of the customers were wearing holstered 1911 Springfield Mil-Spec .45 pistols, and he immediately turned and left the store.

Meanwhile, conscientious Cobb County Police Officer D. Lowe had noticed suspicious cars sitting behind the restaurant in the dark and decided to investigate. He caught men with masks and rifles who had been preparing to rob the Wafflehouse. The criminals informed the police that they had changed their mind upon discovering armed customers and were waiting for Matt and J.P. to leave. Ironically, the police car was pulling in to the parking lot just as Matt and J.P. were driving away. In other words, had Matt and J.P. not been armed, the robbery probably would have occurred before the police intervened.

Captain Jerry Quan, the Commander for Precinct One, where the Wafflehouse is located, confirmed Matt Brannan's story as one in which the open display of a pistol deterred a well armed robbery crew.

Matt Brannan is making an Open Records Act request, and there will be an update to this story when more information is available. The case number is 09-133500. There will be updates and follow up articles as more information becomes available.

Didn't Weis say that he had ZERO input into Cozzi's case? Am i the only one that remembers that? So he lied to us from day one. Listen to the previous post on Cozzi's case and the prosecution admits that Weis sent them numerous e-mails regarding the matter, and not in defense of cozzi. He's the one responsible for Bill being down there. What a p.o.s.

A guy who was a young public defender 30 years ago tells the story of finding out that one of his clients, who had beat a couple of pages of busts in Chicago, was in prison in Wisconsin for an armed robbery in Milwaukee.

The attorney asked the inmate what happened. The inmate shot back, "Man, I pulled a lick and three weeks later I was in fucking prison. They don't forget shit like they do in Chicago."

Suburban troller from Naperville: I always tell my Cook County friends at work-our police will fuck you up if you pull bull shit around here. We have way more Section 8 people living here than I want to see and some of them who move here don't get it. Our police have a lot of time on their hands and the theft of a bird caught on video also catches their attention. They do a fantastic job here and we support them. Theres no reverends or phony Michael Phalgers here. If there were they would be run out of town on a rail. We support our police not like the assholes in the City.

Sorry, but you're wrong.

According to "City Data", Naperville has approx. 31000 housing units. 27000 of these are holding a mortgage and around 4000 aren't.
There are currently 681 foreclosures listed in Naperville which comes out to around 2%, not 10%.
Now take Berwyn for example. THEY'RE sitting with about 900 of their approx. 10000 housing units in foreclosure.

OT- Say what you want about the "Cozzi Turnout" but I think it is indicative of a larger phenomenon. The CPD as a whole is in a state of shock, and deep depression. When you are depressed you are not yourself, you are lethargic and resigned. That is why the turnout was low, that is why police are laying low and letting crime go through the roof. I think the Judges really saw a broken down pathetic shell of a CPD there and know who exactly to put the blame on. Cops really do care about Cozzi but are in a post tramatic state of dispair because of WIES. Some people don't go to funerals because they can't bear to see a loved one laying there without losing there marbles. Believe it or not Weis and daley killed the city and it's police in one stupid move that put all of the city's residents in danger. All Cops develop a keen sense of fairplay over the years and anyone can see that we are treated unfair in the justice system as a whole.
