Bring on the Slowdown

We're pretty sure we're permitted to advocate for a CTA slowdown off duty from the privacy of our own homes:
  • CTA bus riders will have to wait even longer to get picked up if drivers follow through on a threat to ease off their accelerators as part of a work slowdown to try to force the transit agency's leadership to make concessions in an ongoing labor impasse.

Bus union president Darrell Jefferson said today that if there's no agreement soon to restore service cuts he will ask his membership to adhere strictly to CTA rules, including a 35-mile-per-hour speed limit. Bus drivers rarely stay below that limit now, Jefferson said, because if they did they wouldn't be able to finish their routes in a timely fashion and riders would see significantly larger gaps between buses.

Drivers also would follow other rules to the letter, such as waiting until all riders are seated or "standing securely" before leaving a stop and sitting at intersections with stale green lights rather than driving through, Jefferson said.

Hopefully, finally, the battle to say, "Enough!" has been joined by a union that can actually do some real damage to Shortshanks. Maybe we'll start flagging down buses again to get "checks" in the middle of their runs.

I hope they do it...we can't, but they can...what happened to those truck drivers that were threatening a strike due to their hours being cut? Somebody, please go on strike...Park District, Streets and San, Electricity, CTA? Please.

How about we follow some of the b.s. rules the dept has. When our response times get 10-20 times worse than the currently poor numbers the citizens and media will realize just how understaffed we are.

Though I tend to agree that the CTA union should stick it up Daley's keester, if they're successful, I envision an angry, red-faced mayor stuttering and spewing his venom at the Police.

"Fine! FINE! We'll keep the CTA drivers. But we'll have to come up with the lost revenue FROM SOMEWHERE!!!

"Maybe we'll just eliminate another 1000 police officers! THAT will save us a bunch of cash!"

AND, then the Daley/Burke/Madigan Crime Family won't suffer a disruption in THEIR revenue flow!

the bus drivers should wait for the weather to warm up before doing the slowdown---- many elderly and disabled people shouldn't have to wait out in the cold longer than normal because of a pissing match between the bus drivers union and the cta.... pro union all the way but not at the expense of people who rely on the service provided to them by the cta everyday....

Hell, bring the jittney cabs to all neighbors, let Stan going east on Belmont at 0530 pickup up Stella at Oak Park Ave and drop her off at Kimball by her work for 50 cents.

Typical democRAT spending cuts; taking it off the bottom where it affects the taxpaying working class.

Once again daley has the business sense of a box of rocks. Hey, make sure you keep all of the superintendent's, supervisors and hundreds of assistants to the supervisors, all making 100+ thousand... keep the bloated management structure and don't worry about not having anyone to drive the buses!

What?! Lay off the management?! THAT'S CRAZY TALK!

I wish the bus drivers would have been obeying the traffic laws all along. They are one of the biggest hazards to to roadways. But the minute they brought Jesse Jackass into the picture I lost all respect for their point of view.

All you blowhards talk a big game about taking your time getting to and completing jobs, but the sad truth is that 95% of "us" won't do that. Why?

Because 95% of the people on this job have no sense of unity.

Because 95% of people on this job are afraid of losing their almighty assigned beat car.

Because 95% of people on this job are afraid that their sergeant or W.C. won't let them have an hour or two on the end.

For brevity's sake, I'll limit one obvious problem within this department to the examples just cited.

And sadly, of the "police" I've been around for the past several years, 95% is the number of them I wouldn't want to work with.

The camaraderie that once existed on this job is all but extinct; the self-centered, overeducated have infiltrated the ranks, bringing a sense of entitlement with them that didn't exist 15 or 20 years ago. "It's all about ME, to Hell with everyone else" is an apt slogan for this Department.

So, if it makes you feel good concocting and TALKING about ways to show discontent about the daily atrocities experienced on this job, have at it. I'll join hands with the "doers", as I've always done, when statements and actions need to be made, heard and seen. Talking without backing it up will get "us" nowhere...but you WILL get that early duck, right?

Kudos to the Amalgamated Transit Workers for taking a stand. The Mayor and his appointed empty suits at thae transit authority prematurely spent transit funds in anticipation of recieving federal funds for the olympics. Now that they're in the hole, they want to throw rank and file workers under the bus (no pun intended) to balance the budget. How many executive and management positions were eliminated along with all those bus drivers, motormen and maintenence people? The mayor and the transit authority are trying to make the union look like the villan. The labor unions who played ball with Daley; SEIU Teamsters ect. got screwed for their trouble. Any union that gives these vultures concessions is comitting suicide not to mention plain stupid.

Did ya all see what Daley the stuutering prick said about the "anti war protestors"? He wants them back. Guess he figured that would help his son out!!! Mine are playing in the sandbox [as Marine families say}....we support our troops. Ya never see Daley go out and show his support of any organization that helps out the military.

No problem with that. About a thousand are leaving this year. I'm one of them.

He's going to get his reduction in the force, whether he wants one or not.

Be very careful what you wish for, Richie.

This is not a slowdown. All they are doing is adhering to the rules and regulations that every driver is supposed to do anyways. I mean, do you really want the driver to speed more than 35 MPH with a bus full of passengers? Do you really want a bus driver to speed to beat the oncoming red light? Of course not!

We should do the same thing. I am not advocating a "work slowdown" but we should do our job by the book, to cover ourselves and to provide excellent police service. If you do a burglary report, then tour the area, canvass the area, knock on doors, look at garages, talk to people, go inside businesses, etc.... If you go to a domestic, then it is time to lock someone up. If Wal-Mart wants to arrest a 14 year old shoplifter, then don't talk them out of it, just do the arrest!

Do your job to the letter. Then and only then will we see the heat placed on Daley. If you don't do that, then you are part of the problem. You are not part of the solution and you will have only yourself to blame when one day you request back up and the nearest car is miles and miles away.

Make sure to properly inspect your vehicle prior to starting your tour. A proper vehicle inspection takes time and you will get a CR# if there is any contraband in your vehicle or body damage.

CPD should do th exact same thing. since we cant even park a squad close to a restaurant for our lousy 1/2 hour lunches, then why not obey every traffic rule, and all other regulations, without failure, every day, every Watch. if it takes a half hour to get somewhere, so be it. It is legit and playing 100% by the Rules. Find a Quarter under the rear seat of your Squad on inspection??, take it in and do a report and inventory it. We're getting fucked by Daley every day, and will soon be fucked with a shit new contract anyway, so why not do the right thing? we didn't make up these laws, rules, etc, they did...

You mean to tell me they actually have a written policy to SPEED in the City?? I thought the limit was 30MPH on streets unless otherwise posted. I think they should stick to 30 as to avoid breaking any laws.

MIND YOU, not that I would ever advocate writing them movers, for all you happy LIDAR people. That is not the way to keep them on our side.

*******

The citizens thank you for this, sir. We're just trying to get where we are going within a reasonable amount of time like everyone else. I have never EVER had a problem speeding in Chicago. I'm not reckless and am usually within 5-10 over when traffic density permits. You guys give us the courtesy we deserve and we appreciate it. The speed limits are grossly underposted anyway.

Can you imagine the backup if everyone went 45 through all the bullshit "construction zones" on the tollways? You know, the ones that have the $375 sign out front 2 miles before the "zone," and the "zone" itself consists of a bunch of orange barrels for a few miles with no equipment, men, trucks, or other materiel to be seen?
