Camera Misses Everything

  • Police have not been able to retrieve images from a city surveillance camera perched above the Southeast Side corner where three teens were slain Friday.

The camera's blue light was blinking, but the camera may not have been recording. City technicians and vendors are inspecting it and trying to determine if any images can be downloaded.

Wow. An empty box with a flashing blue light. And this cost taxpayers how much?
  • The lack of footage has not hampered the investigation into the shooting at 87th and Exchange, several sources said. Police have said they are looking for three people.
The lack of footage hasn't hampered anything because there are finally around a billion witnesses willing to come forward and point out who chased, shot and slaughtered three people in an alley in Chicago. That in itself is a first.

What's truly silly is how the lack of footage hasn't assisted in any investigations aside from verifying that a vehicle was in the Little Village neighborhood at the time of a shooting (the actual car was followed by a civilian witness and stopped a mile or more away from the shooting) and the recent Salvation Army Kettle Caper. Otherwise, we'd be hearing about the cameras assisting the police every single day from the Daley Publicity Machine.

Talked to a Dispatcher friend of mine asking why camera watchers at OEMC are calling in parking violators. He answer without hesitation is that the civilian supervisors are requiring them to call violators in to justify their positions.

Also says that at least 80% of the cameras are useless due to their positioning. They get some great pics of trees and birds.

BUT in his words cameras give a false sense of security to the democrats who buy what ever daley says.

My question is. Has any pod camera ever captured images of any real crime?

as has been told, the cameras are useless....what hasn't been reported, or investigated, are how many crimes, citywide, during the time that the cameras have been in place, have been "solved" (i.e., camera video: an analysis of crimes solved vs. number of cameras citywide vs. cost per camera (installation/maintenance, etc.), vs. crimes "solved" per camera/camera cost....the analysis can go on and on...shortshanks is delusional about the cameras; they're not only useless, so is he..

I wish someone would make up their mind, cause this shit is costing me money!

You know what doesn't miss everything??? Real police officers!! Instead of spending millions on an inanimate object why not allocate resources to something that time and time has proven its' worth hard working police officers: case in point is the great job done by the 011th district beat officers, members of the gang enforcement unit and the unit formally known as the a/4 midnight gang team(now A/4 midnight tact team). On view shots fired, chase ensues all officers work together and apprehend 3 offenders(yes pee wee), recover 3 weapons and the victim who was shot in upwards of 20 times lives to testify. Great job done by all officers! Oh, I do think they drove past some blinking cameras!

According to the police spokeswomen, "These cameras (the ones not working) make up a small portion of city's network and are inspected regularly...About 95 percent of the network's cameras are working at any given time". Anyone who every tried using these things knows what a joke this statement is.

Does anyone in the media every check on these lies? I tried to use the cameras in 5th district a few days ago and more than half look like shit or not working.

what a horrible waste of money these cameras are. Instead of dumping money into these empty boxes how about delivering those new Tahos that were promised a month ago? How about giving us a contract? If not at least dont lie to us anymore.

This reminds me of the time I saw a few crows sitting on a SCARECROW in a cornfield.

Shortshanks' camera pods are nothing more than expensive but useless scarecrows.

Perception is everything to this mayor.

The camera on 87th hasn't worked in about 4 months. City had a repair crew working on it the next morning. But I guess it takes a while to fix things especially since 5 people have been killed in front of that camera in about the last 6 months. Boy I will feel safe when there is a camera on every corner!

Chicago Magazine has an article about the cameras this month. The scent of journalism actually comes through in this peice. They do a little research and as a result we are not spoon-fed (see any suntimes and tribune articles over past years about the cameras) the daley machine's propaganda about how great these things are? You wonder why these newspaper rags are going bankrupt? They lost their integrity a long time ago. It took awhile for working people to catch on. The only ture journalists today can be found on independent blogs.

Every good idea in Chicago gets compromised by patronage-related contract awards that cancel the net benefit of the original idea.

I worked on the Chicago Circulator Project more than a decade ago for a private vendor. This was the "streetcar project" proposed for downtown, train stations, Navy Pier, and McCormick Place. It was a good idea. It had 2/3rds funding in place from state and fed. It would have alleviated bus and some car traffic from CBD, and made it easier for tourists (including all important conventioneers). It had significant engineering and multi-agency coordination complete. Daley killed the project, because "he was afraid of political fallout from complaining property owners in Loop during construction." Sums up Daley in a nutshell.

Here's what I learned from this public-private enterprise experience:

1) Daley doesn't trust city employees to work a full day, or with full attention and competence. He trusts outsourced (and "juiced") consultants and vendors to provide better services, albeit at a higher price.

2) Daley isn't very intelligent; he makes decisions from gut instinct. Reports directed to Daley were to be written at "8th Grade reading comprehension", per project director's specific directive. Daley is carefully protected (except at press conferences) by staff.

3) Daley relies on the same relatively small set of consultants, vendors, and contractors because he is generally mistrustful. Chicago is governed from a very myopic view. Project was laden with staffers and consultant firms that had been vetted for their loyalty.

4) Someone needs to investigate Marilyn Katz, self-professed former SDS rabble-rouser and longtime Daley operative. Talk about conflicted personality; all that liberal credential talk yet she's become wealthy on public relations contracts from Chicago to protect Daley's interests. We always suspected she had compromising photos of Daley; no other explanation seems plausible.

That would be your and my money, by the way.

It is a proven fact that videos from cameras do help solve crimes. Unfortunately, it is not the city's waste of money cameras. It is store camera, civilian cameras, home cameras, etc.

016 has helped solve many a crime with their video surveillance people. All over the city. The videos are brought into the 016 station, or the person developing the video goes to the site to retrieve the video, and develops them. Majority of the time, there are clear faces, enabling the detective to make an arrest, by confronting the offender with his picture, placing him at the scene.

Too bad the city cameras are not as good as private ones. Maybe even more crimes would be solved.

As a taxpaying citizen, these cameras seem to be a lot like the gun registration program - a waste of time and money for zero return. Why is it that We The People go along with this bullshit?

I'd rather see cops in cars with dogs and guns, than some blinking bullshit box. At least I know if I'm walking unarmed, as I have to be thanks to Daley, if a cop sees something amiss, he's going to stop and help. The camera is probably pointing at the sky or at the tits of the girl at the ice cream counter at the shop across the street!

Why the fuck do we live here? I constantly ask myself that. I'm going to be gone soon. The liberals can have their little utopia. When it turns out like Detroit they'll blame someone other than themselves, pissants.

GEE, What a surprise ! Hasn't this always been the problem with clout bidding or bid rigging ?

It seems to me I've been hearing this complaint for years with regard to the asphalt used to pave our streets. Poor quality or insufficient quantity resulting in
crumbling and, need I say it(?), POT HOLES !

These POD cameras have not solved one single crime that I know of. I'm a detective and have requested many pod videos. First, because they move around you usually don't have them pointed the right way at the right time. Second, the picture quality is god awful. The video can't be enhanced to clear up the recorded images, and can't be enlarged because that just distorts the already poor image. Trust me. You will never get an identification of an offender from a pod camera due to the poor quality. You will never be able to read a license plate for the same reason. I've talked to detectives in other areas and they all say the same thing.

I hope I am not the only one who's noticed lately, but nearly everything Daley proposes/recommends in the end turns out to be the dummist things you could have imagined-sold Midway, sold meters, built the big bean that looks like my left nut while laying in the prone position and his latest one: Going after the surrounding suburban car rental companies with this have customers sign what is basically a sworn statement saying that I will not drive the rental car in the city of Chicago, the car rental companies should win the case for the sheer reasoning that filling out the paperwork would be too time consuming and may cause the customer to walk out of the place of business thereby costing the company tens of thousands of dollars in lost revenue, not to mention customer loyalty. The customer will just go deeper into the suburbs to find one that will rent it to them w/o the hassle.Quite frankly,I think the Mayor is in the early stages of slime deasese.

An Open Letter to The Citizens of Chicago:

Mayor Daley has spent millions of your tax dollars installing camera PODS all across the city. To date non of these PODS have captured one iota of criminal activity. Hundreds of murders, robberies, and aggravated batteries committed on the streets of this city and not ONE FUCKING picture or video from any of these useless PODS.
I have investigated at least 50 homicides committed in the vicinity of a POD and the only video I or my partner have ever seen is of the pole the damn thing is mounted to.
SCC, could you please find out just how many millions of dollars have been spent on these useless cameras? And while your at it find out how much of the taxpayers money was spent on that other useless system that tracks the sound of gunshots. That system is an even bigger joke. None of the assholes who approved this system took into account the reverberation from the many buildings, making it IMPOSSIBLE to determine the origin of the gunshots. Daley YOU ARE A COMPLETE MORON....
